🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

Continuing the discussion from Status: Statme: Stathim: Stather: Statyou: Statzhim: Statmer: Stathem: Stathir: Stathum: Stratfor: Agribusiness Appreciation:
Status: This morning in the shower (aka where I do my best thinking) I had the greatest idea! I should empty out one of those plastic bottles of motor oil, run it through the dishwasher like a hundred times, then use it as a water bottle.
I got a bunch of them in my garage, but unfortunately they're all full and I no longer own a car that leaks oil, so I don't know how to get rid of the oil... hm.
This just doesn't seem like a good idea, so... comments?
-
This seems like the best idea to me. Too bad I don't have any oil bottles, empty or full - I'd do that in a heartbeat.
-
...You can get a water bottle for like, a buck. Hell, you can get an expensive water bottle for $30. Assume it takes you half an hour of time in 5-minute increments repeatedly running the dishwasher to get it clean "enough". Risk to your health aside, if you value your time at more than $60/hr you've wasted money.
-
You
I know I can. This isn't my idea though! I just reposted it from the Status thread.

It's not about money, it's about art.
Drinking from an oil can is hilarious. I can guarantee I'd get a hundred laughs from my co-workers.
-
Ah. Fair enough.
-
I already "recycle" my Powerade bottles into water bottles. Because fuck people who buy water bottles.
-
This isn't my idea though!
Bad idea: Discourse not having the poster name in cross-thread quotes.

I can guarantee I'd get a hundred laughs from my co-workers when they find out I poisoned myself by trying to drink from an oil can for no particular reason.

get a bottle of vodka or some other white alcohol. fill it with water, drink from it. funny looks everywhere
-
Good water bottles are handy during high impact long duration exercise. Screw caps are just a handy way to spill shit everywhere.

When would I ever be doing that?

Revising mental Blakeyrat model.
Your previous mental Blakeyrat model included something that resembled "high impact long duration exercise"?

My mental Blakeyrat model is someone in an "ironic" flannel shirt, shitfaced on scotch, doing Let's Play style videos while petting his cat and cursing shitty video games.
-
I don't wear flannel.
-
But the rest is pretty accurate?

I'm not generally worried about a drink during such activities.
-
i know there's a joke about drinking before such activities, and worrying after, but i can't get it quite right
-
It actually didn't. But it included lots of copy paste from myself and I forgot that I am probably the one and only fat nerd programmer on earth who is trying earnestly to stop being a fat chud.

Ah. Hipster.
I bet you could find a makerspace near you and find someone to artisanally make one for you with a mold. Or you could 3D-print one at your local library.

Bad idea: Jeffing this out of this topic so that you get to read it all over again since Discourse marks it as new.

Bad idea: Jeffing the out of the topic caused me to have two undismissable notifications.

Writing the post that originated it all was a bad idea, it seems.

You should get a Kickstarter for this and go into business selling them. Bet you'd sell millions.

You know, the oil bottle thing has already been done a long time ago:

It's pretty amazing all right...set programmer productivity back to half a source line per day, or thereabouts.
-
This programmer sucks! Did he not go through the tutorial? Not to mention the idiotic side comments confusing it so it tries to type it.
Also, blah blah blah doing it wrong get off my lawn...
-
When I saw this the first time (I think it was posted here before) I nearly pissed myself laughing.
-
I'm not sure if this is the worst idea I've ever had but...
I'm honestly thinking of getting this. Its about £30 a month but I do read about two to three technical books a month so it would actually save the company money to get it for me.
-
We have access to a similar system which the company pays for for everyone in IT.

Not since Vatican II, they aren't. They don't even use rulers anymore.

Had they used "saldi" they could've fitted two of letters into the gaps for a bit more evenness. Not that it helps a lot.

Bad Idea: Running Gentoo on a laptop when it is the only computer you have, and you have no wired networking.
Hopefully, Mint will be a bit better behaved. While I like the whole idea of a source-based distro and being able to tweak every last thing, keeping Gentoo running smoothly is a lot of work, far more than even a more typical Linux installation is. I can deal with it when I have the time to do so, and more importantly, a second computer to fall back on, but in my current situation it simply isn't realistic. I should have realized that more than a month ago.
-
This sounds like a contender for a whole new thread. The 'I should have known better' ideas thread, perhaps.
-
Too true. sigh What was I thinking?
