STATUS: So I've got the second "Sorry we cheated at emissions" letter from VW. This one actually outlines the fix - which for the 1.6 TDi is to install a "flow transformer" in front of the air mass sensor and do a software update.
A "flow transformer" is just a mesh.Anticipated date of a mesh and software update being ready... Q3 2016

STATUS HAPPY!
I fat fingered my mouse while browsing amazon and found a page full of marshmallows! I am now fifty pounds poorer and optimistic about the future.

To me, that sounds like you're about to become fifty pounds more well endowed.

dunno. i made him up.
your comment gave me an idea that made me giggle, so i faked a log file to demonstrate it, anonymoused a name that AFAIK never worked here and posted it.

I've seen too much for anything to surprise me anymore.
You need to be less subtle in the future. :-)

duely noted.
You need to be less subtle in the future.
i thought i was about as subtle a slap in the face with a halibut (or other large fish of your choice)

apparently i was wrong

TalkTalk
Well, there's your problem.
I would be out of my TalkTalk contract by now, but failed to notice that when I moved house they signed me up to a new 18 month contract.

Perhaps try slapping him with an Electrophorus electricus. 2m, 20kg; I think it qualifies as large, but it also adds its own, special unsubtlety.

Wow, that shouldn't be legal. At least EE haven't done that to me.
Well, there's your problem.
It's actually fixed now without any engineers doing a visit. They won't tell me why though so I don't have a very happy vibe about taking it live tomorrow in case it flakes out again.
I'll be leaving all our TTLs low in case we need to abandon ship back to our old connection that's for certain.
-
Wow, that shouldn't be legal
I'm just going to wait for the next price hike, at which point they have to let me out. The real kicker is that they left me without broadband for two weeks, between cutting off the old supply early and failing to get the new one working when they said they would.

Awww that would be awful. It's would be like learning that your veal lived a long happy life.

Is that why the english keep the plumbing on the outside of their houses where they are easier to repair?
Wouldn't that just make the pipes freeze in winter? That's like solving a hangnail by cutting off the finger.

Indeed it is, but I have actually been given this explanation once from an englishman.
As a Swede, and with a limited but non-zero experience of english houses, I can state that they don't know how to build insulated houses. "If we insulate more it is going to get too warm in bed with the hot-water bottle!"

Status: I just pulled a package of chicken out of the freezer to thaw and happened to glance at the date on it. It's been solidly frozen, so it's still safe, and it's vacuum-packed, so there's no apparent freezer burn, but it's been in there a long time.

I've got ~$1.40 in change now. Will that help?

This is the worst of both worlds
The worst of both worlds is Java's XML logging format. Whoever invented it was huffing amazing amounts of meth that day…

but it's been in there a long time.
Define "long". I was cleaning out the pantry this weekend and found some cookie mix from 2011.
In 2012 or so I was doing the same and found a package of Lipton Cup 'O Soup that didn't have an expiration on it, but based on the store name on the price tag, could not have been bought later than 1999.

Status: I love small bands and independent labels.
My girlfriend is a huge fan of a certain Seattle band, so I figured I'll get her a set of CDs and a T-shirt. I thought it would be a nice touch to have them signed, but how do you get an autograph off a US band that's way too small to have an European tour ever?
Well, turns out, all it took was just to ask. A set of four CDs, all signed, just arrived after three or so weeks in shipment.
So, well, they're awesome. Buy their shit.

1.75 years is a long time for meat. However, I can beat your cookie mix; I have a box of cake mix that says BEST BEFORE / MEILLEUR AVANT JL2006.
could not have been bought later than 1999.
I'm pretty sure you got me there.

I was really hoping you were going to start talking about Lapfox Trax.

There seems to be an epidemic of that going on this week. =/

you keep failing.
Story of today. One of the modules no longer loaded includes an inhibitor and governance.
At least there are no fires, but it's really hard to see... clearly...

Ah, they were in Seattle at one point. Or, at least, I thought they were. Perhaps they moved.Nevertheless, I am rather fond of their music.

Status: Went to check if there's been a new What-If released, and, despite being disappointed by the lack of new What-If's, am once again thoroughly amused by the opening line of the most recent one.
This is, by far, the most destructive What-If scenario to date.
As an avid reader of What-If's, this sentence is extremely impressive and hilarious.
-
Nevertheless, I am rather fond of their music.
Well, neither mine nor my girlfriend's love for electronic music extends beyond very few artists and bands anyway.
-
Fair enough, I suppose.

This is called Devour the Day.I've actually heard of them. Given the venue is fucking empty, nobody else has. Opening for All That Remains. Which apparently nobody cares about either.because seriously, there are like 40 people here across 3 floors.
Correction: this band is some buncha nobodies I've never heard of. Double opener. For 40 people. Loss making show for sure.

Status: A couple of breakthroughs today. Finally figured out a bug that had been bugging me all week (which, of course was something I'd put in last week ). And got 3.5 new Den Leaders for the Cub Scout Pack, so I don't have to plan Den Meetings any more.
