Until carriers stop transmitting on 1G networks,
Aren't they supposed to start shutting the 2G networks down in '17?
-
Not sure, I thought they were keeping it for IOT usage or something..
-
Aren't they supposed to start shutting the 2G networks down in '17?
Who would "they" be?
I think it would be highly unusual for all the different carriers worldwide to do anything all at the same time. While I'm sure many would like to turn it off right now, the reality in the US is probably going to be that one carrier will in 2017, and the others will follow sooner or later depending on how customers react to the first one.
Other countries will of course act according to their own schedules, which may or may not take the customer's wishes into consideration, depending on the various laws and regulations that apply in each country.
I thought they were keeping it for IOT usage or something.
Maybe in the short term. It's my understanding that a lot of the 5G R&D work is designed to accommodate the low power requirements of IoT. My guess is that any reserved use of 2G for IoT will rapidly fade away once 5G gets established in a few years. Maybe not by 2017, but probably soon afterward.
-
Posting from it right now, COMPLAINs! But you can take my from my cold dead waist.
-
Who would "they" be?
You may safely assume "some network providers." For example, apparently Telstra is going to do so next year:
I think it would be highly unusual for all the different carriers worldwide to do anything all at the same time.
That's probably why I said "start" and not "they're all going away at once."
ETA: http://go.transloc.com/2g-network-sunset says AT&T and T-Mo are going to start as early as next year, although [pendant alert] possibly not at the same time.

Why don't just get a dumbphone? Like mine. Those seemingly never die.
The 2730 Classic is a really nice little phone. I liked the side μSD card slot on mine, and the fact that it just never did anything stupid.
Unfortunately it can't be a personal wifi hotspot, which is a tool that I need as a PC fixit guy who does home visits. So now I use a shit-grade Huawei Android phone I got new for AU$70 (currently about US$50). It's not gonna win any beauty contests, the touch screen is not a good substitute for buttons and I imagine its gaming performance would completely suck (I don't game), but the wifi hotspot works, as does voice guided GPS navigation (with an occasional reboot) which I was completely not expecting when I bought it.

some HTC phones
I won't recommand new HTC phones, the people I know who is working there won't either.Since that's not my story I'm not going to share the details, just want to let you know there's lots of regarding their workplace and practice so it's that bad.

Rogers
Fuck Rogers in the ass with it's own severed head.
I'm with Virgin Mobile (who is, unfortunately, now owned by Bell in Canada). But it's a pay-as-you-go plan. So $100/year gets me enough minutes for the few calls I make.
-
So you bought two defective laptops from them and then you leap at the chance of buying a phone from the same company?
In all fairness, the laptops weren't defective when I bought the phone.
You could have bought a Windows Phone.
Or I could have a good phone. Enjoy your CrayolaOS
-
Same here if in the end I have to jump ship from WinPhone camp.
-
Newer phones let you disable almost all of it.
Rooted phones let you disable all of it, and install XPrivacy too.
-
Or you can buy a Nexus and flash vanilla Android OS into it.

I don't know why you would think I have any idea what carriers you like/dislike. I said above Rogers is the only one I know of. That means they're the only ones I could look up prices for.

I spent a few minutes with a Windows 8 phone a couple years ago, and it actually seemed pretty nice. If it weren't for the fact there's no apps for Windows I would've probably gotten one instead of Android. That's actually the case now, too.

dumbphone
I had one:
Nokia 3155i. It was pretty, and it did it's job well for 6+ years. And then it broke. The flip flipped too far, and something snapped, and took out a ribbon cable. If it hadn't, I'd still be using it.

Rogers inspires hate by osmosis. Even if you didn't know I hated them, you hate them.

Well, even if I do now, I didn't know then, because I didn't know you hated them to osmote that hatred.

The hate is so powerful it transcends time-- so now you know then.

I think I saw that on an episode of Enterprise, except that it wasn't hate, but
midichlorianstime parasites or something.

iPhones runs Discourse better
Are we calling that a feature now?
Why not? After all, to run DIscourse comparatively well means it must have pretty good protection in place against badly-written programs, and that's a feature worth having. Why don't just get a dumbphone? Like mine.
Nokia X3 here. It does what I need it to, so I don't see any point in upgrading.
-
Which manufacturer are you basing the crapware claim on?
In Poland at least, it's quite often not the manufacturer but the mobile provider. If you decide to get a phone with your plan, be prepared for Polaroid (or whatever this shit is called) Office and other crapware. Lots of crapware.

I think you get get a brand new Lumia 640 for 70usd

That's obvious, you know. They're a telco. What's not to hate?
-
That's why I don't buy phones from providers. But it didn't work that well because Samsung crapwared the hell of this phone without help from a provider.
The initial crapware was relatively few, but after their ota update to KitKat it was insane.

Well yes but I meant out of the box. Not everyone wants to void the warranty to disable some apps.

Somewhat on topic but I have a iphone 4 for work. I used it once for testing and now it sits in my desk drawer.

Until carriers stop transmitting on 1G networks, I suppose...
I think here in Hungary they are not even thinking about it. And also you can actually buy a new dumbphone (which both of my parents did, and what I intend to do when this dies)

Also, the joke's on you because I already hate all phone companies because they're all evil.

Well yes but I meant out of the box.
The One Plus comes pre-installed with Cyanogen, iirc.

I was pointing to the fact you rather meant 2G. GSM is the second generation.

Still waiting for my damn iPhone.
It shipping from Toronto, which is 20km south and west of me.
Tracking shows it took TWO FUCKING DAYS to go to Mississauga-- which is about 20km FURTHER WEST!
Now it's en route to me-- which means it now has to travel that 20KM back to Toronto, then 20km north and east to get to me.
It literally would have been easier and faster to tape the phone to a donkey, point it north-east, and slap it's nutsack with a taser.
-
you rather meant 2G
Oh. Well considering it was originally meant to be tongue-in-cheek, it still almost worked, right?
-
Somewhat on topic but I have a iphone 4 for work. I used it once for testing and now it sits in my desk drawer.
I was allowed to use an IPhone 4 we had around at the office (previously used for testing) when my Nokia 6124 finally gave up.I was glad when I switched to something else. It turns out that it had been in repair a few times because the volume
-
button would spontaneously report being pressed but they couldn't find what was wrong. Even when the phone had no case and was lying on a flat surface, the volume would every so often keep going towards zero. Great fun when I had the occasional call...

If it shipped via UPS, it probably had to go to Memphis first.
edit: Damn, that's Fedex, not UPS (as a coworker reminded me at lunch today)...

This may actually be why my old dumb phone died, rather than the phone itself dying. The guy at the T-Mobile store said something about, "We had to decommission all those old towers," when I mentioned my old phone dying. I don't know whether he knew what he was talking about, but he wasn't trying to BS me into buying a new phone. (I'd already bought it at Fry's and just needed a new micro-SIM card for it.)

Hey, did I mention that both my and my wife's laptop (same ones from OP) are also BOTH having power issues? Plug in AC adapter, and it'll just randomly stop charging, and start, and stop, and start. Have to make sure brightness settings are the same on both "plugged in" and "not plugged in" profiles, or the screen constantly flashes.
Googleing says "Samsung uses shit solder. The ac plug is fucked. Rip it out, buy new one, resolder".
Of course, who would think about using GOOD solder on one of the hottest parts of a laptop (which is located right next to THE hottest part of the laptop). Fucking monkey fuckers.
This is after buying new power adapters because the OEM ones died. And the only ones available are cheap-fucking ones from China that get so hot they literally burn you if you touch them. No, not an exaggeration. But it's okay, because there's a sticker on them that says "warning becomes hot". Thanks for not providing after-market adapters, Samsung.
(fake edit: I did find a North American manufacture of power adapters. Waiting to see how much shipping is).
Fuck you Samsung. Fuck you.

I bought a samsung galaxy s7 edge, spent almost 700 USD. 2 months from purchase date the wifi stopped finding search results. i had to do a factory reset to be able to find anything under the wifi search. a week later same thing happened .. i can't find my home network.. all other devices on my home works fine, mac book and other devices can find my home wifi but not the s7 edge. i did another factory reset and it worked for about 4 days then the same thing happened. i tried factory resetting only this time the wifi can't find anything. so i'm stuck at the screen where i need to verify my username and password so that samsung doesn't think i stole the phone. fuck yuo samsung fuck you.. i am done buying samsung devices.
