Seriously. Everything before about 1986 sucked shit, and it really didn't even start getting good until 2008 or so. And I mean everything.

Name something from before 1986 that was better than it is now.
-
Literature, for the most part.
-
This candy bar from 1985.

I like @blakeyrat he is the soul of this site :) and I do agree with him on this, I would gladly trade for 1 year of life 1000 years from now, all my remaining life (a 50:1 ratio). And he is somehow right, things are exponentially better now than 60 years ago.
-
Dude, Frank Herbert died in '86.

Expected lifespan of a consumer-grade durable good (appliance, sewing machine, etc.), was better...

Literature, for the most part.
How do you figure?
If you want to go for art, how about painting? Though I think you have to go before the impressionists, personally, so @blakeyrat is, like, 100 years off with 1986.
-
Yup and there were comfortable Radium bath , how nostalgic
-
-
I guess you did not like Harry Potter, good writers do not come frequently unfortunately but there are good literature now still (if you like Science Fiction you would not like it before 90s).
-
um, Doc Smith? Unabashedly modern space opera? When nearly all scifi is post-modern? But yeah, I would say, I can't really dig on Verne, 1890s scifi was kinda teh suck.
-
There were few, yes but they all would be done in a month. I recently re-read Verne's Journey to the center of earth, it was fun (and nostalgic) but all the time there was this lingering in my mind.
-
How do you figure?
I already answered this for you upthread. You could go check, but

I already answered this for you upthread.
That's as unsatisfying an answer as saying that only white people would enjoy time travel. As much as I like Herbert. But we now have guys like Neal Stephenson, whose books rival Herbert in complexity and probably surpasses him in the variety of ideas that he explores.
-
True enough, for the most part. Stephenson's stuff seems less structured and more rambly to me, as opposed to the more precise, mystical nature of Herbert's.
I'd be hard-pressed to say one is better than the other. But my point still stands; things before '86 cannot all be awful in a universe containing Dune.
-
-
What after you read Dune? How many times can you read about the giant drug-puking worms, sand people and their prophet and space Jihad I read it once and it was great but will not touch it for quite some time.
-
I read it once and it was great
Good, we agree, it's a good book, and it's from before '86, and there still aren't many things on par with it. Earthsea is also pretty old.

Some artists are bringing back the old techniques and moving away from abstract art, it just isn't being publicized.
-
Correct; life was much better when Pink Floyd didn't exist. In 1964
-

I agree. There is plenty of good literature pre-1986, certainly.
-

3200 BC (when writing words was invented in Sumer) to AD 1986 encompasses 99.44% of the time literature has existed, so that would make a lot of sense.

As I understand it, the only real alternative to living in the future is to commit suicide in the present.

Now do "people who want to live are shitty assholes"
-

You are utterly wrong, IMHO. Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, to name the first three names that popped into my head.
-
Great authors, maybe I should have said if you like SciFi you would not go back to live before 90s (and perhaps better make it 80s). There were simply not many options at the time. The works of those authors (specially for Clarke) only got better over time. Some classics like iRobot are nice but lack the sophistication that I personally like. No matter how smart those authors are and how beautiful the literature is, only someone who has seen a 3D movie will further the imagination to something beyond it, sophisticated enough for me living in the 21st century. It is like Verne's works, some SciFi gets old because of the Sci element.

Sheeit, my in-laws had a fridge in their garage. The damn thing had to be at least sixty years old when it keeled over a couple months ago. I'm willing to bet that it could have been fixed with the right tools, but nope, they replaced it with ashittymodern fridge instead.

And they're probably saving a noticable amount on their electric bill.

Perhaps, but if the thing costs $300 and breaks within five years?

In that case, they probably saved money. On average, replacing a 10 year old fridge will save about $100 per year. Since they are replacing an older unit, they will probably be saving more. Not to mention that it will likely last more than 5 years. Last fridge I bought was still going strong at 5 years old when I sold it with my last house.

for me, 2010 > 2001 >2061 > 3001

Name something from before 1986 that was better than it is now.
Population pressure.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide level.
Australian Government refugee policy.
Sixth-grade literacy and numeracy.

Traffic.
I disagree. In 1986 the national speed limit on highways in The Netherlands was 100 km/h. Nowadays you are typically allowed and able to drive faster.

The internet.
That's what you pick if the year is 1993. Before that, things were just getting faster and more connected; the sense of community was still there. After that, commerce was meaningfully present too and everything turned to shit.

Yeah, I should probably think about doing that... I bought mine when I moved into my house. In 1996.
