I can't like this post hard enough. If you ride a bike, you need hearing protection. If you want to listen to music (or phone or radio communication), you need isolating earphones. Any other option means hearing damage.
I used these:

Sold my bike a few months ago but I'll get another one day. Motorcycling isn't something you can just give up.
-
I should really get some earplugs. When you can't hear your engine at full throttle over the wind blast it's a good sign that you're damaging your ears.
I do have passive isolating earphones but I prefer not to distract myself with music while riding

QFT. I didn't ride for a couple of years after my provisional entitlement lapsed while living in London. As soon as I was out of there I started on the theory test and full license.

FWP: this is a starred topic, but it no longer has a star in topic lists.
Edit: except now it has again. Twinkle twinkle little stars.
-
You're going to love the next update....
-
Oh, I already do. ᶰᵒᵗ
-
listening at maximum volume
FWP: Having a significant amount of pre-loudness-war music that was mastered extraordinarily quietly and sounds at full volume about as loud as new music on 50%.
-
Not a FWP by itself, but I'm watching a video demo for some new internal framework and for the past 30 minutes the guy has been trying to fix the shitty code to make the demo work. Ugh! What a torture!
-
You're going to love the next update....
That would be the 'we're gonna remove this really useful feature because Jeff has an allergy to stars' update?
Yes, I know, stars and bookmarks are being merged, so ultimately it's not really a removal but a streamlining, but it still has the potential to break workflows users have gotten used to. Surely I'm not the only one who uses the Starred Topics tab on the root page?
-
Technically, it's Sam's allergy. That just wound up turning contagious when someone posted their CSS customization on meta.d (again).
I think that CSS customizations are the Discourse version of bio-terrorism.
-

Just imagine what some of the other (currently) 161 changes have been doing then...

Putting the video online without editing that away is a WTF.

Wait, blaming Jeff was Doing It Wrong™?i r puzld hejhog
-
It was recorded during a company wide webcast, and yes, they could get their shit together before doing it. I'm like:
"You are missing a comma there!!!"
"That's not the right controller name you used!!!"
-
You're going to love the next update....
i may have rescued us somewhat over on meta.d last night. maybe. we'll have to wait and see, but at the least we should be able to get those CSS classes
i'm constantly amazed at how being polite (and asking @sam instead of anyone else) gets great results!

(and the next few posts, you can follow the linked post here for more background, but it's not that necessary)

Retsupurae: "I'm not even really asking for editing, you just drag a highlight and hit 'delete', am I fucking Spielberg!?"

If you ever go on public transport with the crappy cheap earbuds that leak out and subject the rest of the bus/carriage to your taste in music then I hate you with the fire of a thousand suns.
In that case, just wait until you run in to an assholes wearing these little gems:

Oh man you can look like your favorite ANIMES!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: Oh wait did we decide those blue things were headphones or...? WHAT THE FUCK AM I LOOKING AT!
-
favorite ANIMES
My favourite anime is Pokemon, because it annoys anime fans when you say "oh yeah, I used to watch Pokemon"
-
i need to make some of those......

[picture of Sash Lilac]
*double-takes*
*rubs eyes in disbelief*
*still sees Sash Lilac*Well, that was the last thing I expected @blakeyrat to post!
For anyone wondering (so not @blakeyrat), those blue things on her head are to protect her ears when she goes swimming. But they look good, so she wears them all the time.
At least, that's the latest thinking; there's been no official word as of yet.
-

Oh, wait, anime.

Even if that made any sense (and it does not) it still doesn't explain what they are.
I played that dumb game and it's not very good, BTW. Your advice sucks. The only thing even slightly good about it is Dan McNeely, which is also the only thing you didn't mention when telling me how good it was. So your advice double-sucks.
-
Oh, it's a game. Whatever.

This is what mine's like on the highway. That sucker is quiet.

I keep mine for longer highway trips only for the same reason. For shorter trips, or just going around town, I don't bother. My bike is so quiet that I can actually locate nearby vehicles by sound alone, their engine/tire noise is usually louder than mine.
-

Mine is a fairly meaty sounding IL4,, which should probably be audible when accelerating in the 60-70 range. I don't think my helmet is sthe quietest
-
Got a windshield?
Mine's a 250cc Honda dual-sport. Single-cylinder, oversized muffler, and no windshield. You can't hear it idling from 20 feet away, the only noise issue is wind hitting my helmet at speed. I always hear from other dual-sporters that I need to put some "real" pipes on it, but I love that when I'm on the woods trails I can hear them coming from a hundred yards away and have plenty of time to prepare and make sure we don't collide.
-
My hands are cold, but I don't type well with gloves on.
-
i may have rescued us somewhat over on meta.d last night.
I don't think so. Jeff himself took those out. Not by default. Period. You probably recall the NSFW commit message.
-
My favourite anime is Pokemon, because it annoys anime fans when you say "oh yeah, I used to watch Pokemon"
+ ̴
I'm going to remember that.
-
. You probably recall the NSFW commit message.
recall it? i tried to call him out on it (and got intercepted by @sam)
-
That's his job as Jeff's body man.
-
I watched tons of anime before I knew what anime was.

LOL. I bet he's not wondering because he already knows.
-
I should really get some earplugs. When you can't hear your engine at full throttle over the wind blast it's a good sign that you're damaging your ears.
Depending on helmet and fairing and such, just wind noise over 80km/h without hearing protection is starting to do damage.
I do have passive isolating earphones but I prefer not to distract myself with music while riding
I don't find it distracting at all on the motorbike, it's just background. I don't turn it up very loud, another reason why I like isolation earphones: I don't need to crank the music to ear-splitting levels just to drown out the background.
On my pushbike though... no music. Very distracting and I need my hearing working to not die. I'm not sure why it's so different. I haven't tried it mountain-biking yet, just commuting.
-

Sounds just like a SJW.
-
-
I don't know. I just wanted to troll you. Sounded funny at the time...
-

Did you ever get into "OH! Super Milk-chan"?
-
that sounds either multi-x rated or G-rated and i'mscared to find out which one
-

PG-ish, as it turns out.
-
My ; key just stopped working (which actually is Shift+,). Which is a bit of a problem when writing C/C++/CUDA code. :-(
(At least ";" is easy to come by for copy-paste.)
-
My <kbd>;</kbd> key just stopped working (which actually is <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>,</kbd>). Which is a bit of a problem when writing C/C++/CUDA code. :-(

You can have some of my ; that I keep typing instead of ' ;)
-
You can have some of my <kbd>;</kbd> that I keep typing instead of <kbd>'</kbd> ;)
Awesome!
However ... the mystery thickens. I can type "," (same key but without shift), but shift+, produces nothing. Other keys work as usual, both with and without shift. The Fuck?
Edit: it gets worse. Using a different keyboard I can type ';'. I can even hold shift on the new keyboard, and press , on the old one to produce a ;. Vice-versa works too, i.e. shift on old keyboard plus , on new also produces a ;. FFS?!
-
Yeah... sounds like the keyboard's on its way out
-
have you tried turning off and on again?
-
Yeah... sounds like the keyboard's on its way out
Could have picked a less annoying way to go. Like maybe having a broken "$" or "@". I mean, what do you need the "$" char for? But no, it's got to start breaking with ";".
-
I mean, what do you need the "$" char for? But no, it's got to start breaking with ";".
If you're coding, this is an easy fix. Just add
/* TODO: fix when I get my new keyboard */
#define $ ;
