Given the reduction in violent crime and violence in general (e.g., how many fights are there in schools?)
Saying that there is a reduction in violence sounds disingenious to me. Let me remind you of some cases, some of them recent. All involve minors being extremely violent.
It is your right to be wrong.

Well, my level of violence has significantly increased after the release of Windows 10, and I don't think I'm the only one.
I think "violence" would be a little bit extreme, but my hatred of Windows 10 is significantly higher than it was 5 years ago.

Pointing to 4 recent cases of violence that made the news doesn't establish any kind of statistics how crime rates have changed, whether rising or falling.
Declining crime rates doesn't mean the result is zero crime, so individual cases don't prove anything, even if you list a hundred of them.

I've become numb to the pain. Mostly.

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
The sources I cited were to show that youth violence has actually increased both in quantity and in level of aggression.
You haven't shown that. You've shown there have been at least 4 instances of youth violence. As you've been told before, a handful of anecdotes says absolutely nothing about statistical trends
-
@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Show a few cases of youth (aged 12 to 14) violence from the 80's if you can
It wouldn't prove anything

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
over stabbing their friends
Yeah, just plain stabbing is sufficient; no need to overdo it.
It does raise the question, though, whether it is possible to stab a friend. It seems obvious that at some point in the process, the friendship is going to end abruptly. At what point does that occur? If it occurs prior to the actual stabbing, say, while brandishing the knife and shouting angrily, then one has not, in fact, stabbed one's friend, rather one's ex-friend.

This is the Windows 10 thread right? Not the garage? I thought we were supposed to all collaboratively derail threads into highly specific C++ discussions, not... whatever this is.
Well, in other news, if you have your Windows 10 system set to dark theme, the add/remove programs list will either be impossible to read or crystal clear depending on how you navigate to it. If you go to it from an open Explorer window, it inherits the dark background color, black on black, but if you open it from running the control panel first, it looks fine.
Or that's what I've heard anyway... I haven't actually figured out how to navigate to it from an existing Explorer window. Does anyone know?

Fine like this?
That's from starting up Control Panel first from the Start Menu.
Edit: Alternatively, running
control.exe

Joking aside, try opening This PC and then clicking on the little arrow top right to expand the ribbon/toolbat thingie. You should see Programs and Features button there.
Is is there, but it has the weird theme-semi-apply thing going on.

To add to the other responses: you can also type "Control Panel" into the address bar.

This, however, will still result in the black background-with-white-everything-else-but-not-foreground.

Dark mode in Winodws is a fucking joke. It will never work properly. There are gazillions of programs which used system colors incorrectly and are no longer updated.
Looks ok to me. Maybe I'm using wrong programs.
-
I let Windows 10 update. I don't know how long it took because I had to leave and return back later. Had I known if would have taken upwards of 15 minutes I wouldn't have allowed it to update.
First of all: why is there now an icon on the lock screen allowing me to connect to a random network before I even login?
Addendum: it's also forgotten I don't want it to connect automatically, so after I restarted again for more updates it connected back automatically before log in. And yet, after logging in it was no longer connected. The setting was still set to connect automatically, against my wish though.
After I login, I see the search thing I never use on taskbar is now expanded, stealing a large chunk of my taskbar. Also, my background image has changed. And the taskbar's color is also slightly different. (though that might be because it's now semi-transparent, I think?)
How bloody difficult is it to have memorized my theme and taskbar preferences?
Also, where did my background image go? It was one of the default Windows backgrounds, but now I can't find it.
I'm trusting these people with my computer. >_<

Mac OS is another story though, there it works pretty well.
You don't want to know how much developer effort it took to make that happen. It was not necessarily simple…

Presumably for users that have remote profiles? And that don't just use Ethernet?

Are you telling me it's possible to grab a random computer and join a domain right from the login screen? That doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

No, but it is possible to log in to a domain-joined computer using an account that's never been logged into before from that domain.
However, Mark my words there will come a time when (oke like with Xbox) you can sign in with any old Microsoft account...

To be fair I originally thought Dark Mode was just a simple Color Scheme (available since Windows 2.0 if memory serves) they put under a nice toggle...

@Jaloopa Neither has any of you shown that violence either overall or done by youth is in decline.
A thing no one claimed to have done. But yes, I did assert it, mainly based on widely public crime rate data.
Show a few cases of youth (aged 12 to 14) violence from the 80's if you can.
No one should be interested in following you down your hole of logical fallacy.

@Zecc said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:

In enterprise environments this may be required in order to connect to a VPN so that your machine can talk to a domain controller before you login.
And yet, after logging in it was no longer connected.
Yeah, I've experienced this, too, with a similar amount of confusion. I thought it was something to do with the way the VPN was set up, but now I guess it's some built in Windows fuckery.

Does that crime rate data show only a global trend or it is divided by age groups as well?
Because I am not claiming that crimes are going up overall -- I am claiming that youth crimes and their severity are going up. Those two aren't mutually exclusive.
So what?
Can you disprove that with those crime rate charts you mentioned and didn't provide a link to?
Whether I can or not is irrelevant because I'm not even going to try. Beyond the fact that I don't really care about this thing that you've picked to annoy the forum with by picking on some minor thing in a larger point that I made...no, wait, that's enough.

@levicki thank you.

Yeah. Wireless connection profiles at the login session may not carry over to the user's. I forget why it's separated.

And in completely unsurprising news... Just targeted at Firefox users for now, to which I give MS an extra big .
-
@Atazhaia But can you remove it?

When uninstalling the programs, you will be prompted to restart Windows. After Windows has been restarted, the programs will be entirely removed and even searching for them does not prompt you to reinstall them again.
Uninstalling Notepad requires a reboot?!
-
@JBert Why would you, though?

That would have been nice... Then most win32 programs that used system colors correctly (yeahyeahyeah...) would "just work" in dark mode. Instead, the forums (where I used to work) are full of "why won't you implement dark mode?!?!?!?!"

Surely, Notepad is like 1MB, while all the other garbage is orders of magnitude larger. How about uninstalling telemetry?e: I guess.

@levicki said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
Or maybe they will buy Notepad++ and put that in instead after integrating it with their ad platform?
Step 1: Take over Notepad++.
Step 2: Closely integrate it with the rest of Windows.
Step 3: Realize they're violating GPL.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Windows is now Open Source!
