No. Dangerously driving assholes are dangerous no matter what they ride. Though there might be higher percent of them between motorbikers—they are already living dangerously by getting on the road without a protective steel cage around them, so the group is self-selecting the less risk averse.

Grandpa in a red Hyundai stops in the middle of the road for no reason
I'm a bit of two minds here. On the one side, yes, grandpa clearly should not be driving if he's doing stuff like this on the road, and he was a total dick (or half-senile) by staying in his car for the whole time afterwards.
On the other hand, there is clearly someone on the verge where he starts braking so I assume this is what frightened him, which really isn't a bad initial reaction (not fully stopping, of course, but slowing down). Plus the guy filming the scene braked in time, showing he had the proper safety distance, and the first biker managed to swerve. The second one should have had even more time than the first one to see the cars braking (at least the one filming), so if he didn't manage to avoid the crash, it clearly shows he wasn't keeping proper safety distance (or being attentive enough).
So really, the first driver was a huge moron, could have killed someone and should not be driving, but I hope the biker will use this opportunity to learn to drive more safely...

It's called target fixation, and it's a pretty common reason for stupid motorcycle crashes.
-
@blek said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:
Officially the biker is at fault for not maintaining a safe distance.
Well, it's true. The grandpa in red shouldn't stop for no reason, especially so hard, but the biker absolutely should anticipate that someone might stop suddenly - and it was his lack of anticipation that caused the crash.
-
@blek said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Can't say I disagree. This is precisely why we have laws against tailgating: so that if the guy ahead of you has to slam on his brakes for a legitimate reason, such as the car ahead of him stopping unexpectedly, you have enough time to react without causing a crash. The biker knew this full well if he's gone through the training necessary to obtain a license; if he didn't care enough to drive safely, then he got exactly what he deserved, and the world is a tiny bit safer at the moment with one tailgater taken off the road.

A guy I knew bought a motorcycle several years ago. He rode it once, then it just sat there in his garage for years and years; he never had much time or interest in taking it for a ride. Eventually he sold it and used the money to buy a big-screen TV, and he gets enjoyment out of that every single day.

On a motorcycle it takes about 30 minutes, by train or by car it's about 1.5 hours including the walk to and from the train. The car may also be a 3 hour one way trip due to traffic jams.
In cities, motorcycles can shave insane amounts off of commute times.

back when my morning commute took me through the freeway to work I regularly saw a man (or possibly woman... they were moving really fast and it's hard to tell at speed) on a super bike, going at least double the speed limit, weaving in and out of cars, barely leaving room for their bike to fit, let alone provide safe offsets.

While we're bashing motorcyclists, I guess I'll tell my latest near-death experience on my motorcycle. A semi was for some reason going slow in the left lane, resulting in everyone passing him on the right. He finally decided to move over into the right lane while I was right next to him. I was only going about 60 MPH so I still had plenty of power left to full-throttle it and pull ahead before he ran me over, but I nearly had to rear-end the car in front of me to avoid him.
-
@mott555 I once saw a semi with stickers on the back of his rig. On the left, a left-pointing arrow and the caption "PASSING SIDE". On the right, a right-pointing arrow. "SUICIDE".
-
@Mason_Wheeler Yeah well the left side was a median and the right side was everyone else because he was going 15 MPH slower than traffic. I gave him plenty of time to pull over into the right lane in case he was looking for an opening, but he never took the opportunity until doing so meant nearly running me over.
-

Those have guards under there to make sure that cars can't squeeze under it (also see the Tesla thread on why that's important).

So, this just happened: Near my appartment there's a primary school and, as with almost all primary schools, they have a bit of a problem with "parent taxis", i.e. their parents would drive them into the class room if they were not stopped. As a result, those morons are regularly parking like they're the last human on Earth.
Today I had two prime examples of the species in front of me - they were parking in the crossing. The first one was parking on the streets which meant that anyone wanting to turn right had a real problem because there was only one lane left and due to his shitty parking, you also couldn't see into the crossing until you had already half-turned into it (which is a bit of a problem if just in that moment there's a car coming from this lane).
The other one did a similar thing only that he was parking his van on the sidewalk. While that provided more space for cars turning right, this decreased the view even further. With all those kids running around (and we know that kids aren't always the most attentive) this was actually rather dangerous. I asked him if he knew that he wasn't allowed to park there (also, there were plenty of legal spots 50 meters down the street) and he said that he knew that.
So I took a photo of his car, told him that I'd forward it to our road traffic department and turned to go. If they follow up on that, it'll be a 15€ fine. That's when he made it more expensive for him: He then told me that if I was taking a photo it should be worth it. I replied, still turned away, that I wasn't interested. He insisted, I turned around and he proudly displayed his middle finger. I said: "Seriously?" He insisted that I take a picture.
Well, if he really, desperately wants it that much...
I just looked it up: Displaying the middle finger is viewed as a "serious insult" and comes with a 600€ fine.
Oh, and in completely unrelated news, did you know that our police department allows us to complain to the police online?
If he hadn't acted like a fool I might've not even reported the whole parking violation...
-
@Rhywden At the gates of my neighborhood, parents like to sit in their cars and watch their kids until they're picked up by the bus.
Well, today, there was a parent parked so as to totally block the sight line for people pulling out. I almost hit a kid crossing in front of that car because the stupid parent had blocked the line of sight.
-

A fool and his money are soon parted.
Shame in this case it isn't landing in your pocket.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Yeah, that's what makes it so dangerous - the first guy had blocked the LOS so completely that, even if I had slowed down to a crawl while turning right, I might have been hit by the oncoming car if that one did not slow down as well.
-
@Rhywden Good thing you both slowed down then.
My rule of thumb is, "treat any point on the road that I can't see as if it contains an obstacle." That means ensuring that if my car has to enter that point, I'm moving slowly enough to react appropriately once I can see it.
It doesn't turn out to be true all that often, but it has been right enough times that I'm really glad I have that rule!
-
@Rhywden said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

What? For blocking a crossing at an intersection? Even in Poland it would be like minimum 70€ (300zł).
While the middle finger wouldn't even get a police note.

Yeah, the fines for traffic violations are absurdly low. For example, it's only recently that they increased the fine for blocking the "emergency lane" on our highways (in a traffic jam, the leftmost lanes are supposed to drive over to the left, while the rightmost lane is to go to the right so that ambulances may pass through) to 300€ and one point. Yes, there were actually assholes who were blocking this lane deliberately, who drove behind the ambulances or who used the lane to turn around and drive back to the nearest exit.
Driving too fast by 10 km/h is a mere 15€ fine and they're even deducting 10% of the measurement before - thus, if you're driving 55 it counts as 50. Which means that you have to drive 66 to get a fine for driving 10 over 50.
Oh, and if someone is blocking your driveway and you want to have him towed - you better hope that the towtruck arrives before the driver. Because if the driver drives away while the towtruck is still en route, you yourself then have to pay the towtruck. Granted, you may sue to get that money back but it's a big hassle.

- There might be more ambulances on the way.
- Ambulances have very limited rear sight.
- If everyone started doing it, the whole emergency lane thing would stop working.

Don't ask me. I knew that it was considered a justiciable insult but actually didn't know that the fine was this high. But, as I said, if he hadn't acted like an asshole... I just took what was offered and ran with it. Remember, he actually insisted.
-
@Mason_Wheeler said in Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition:

Normally, there's a reason for the traffic jam and if there's an ambulance driving up the emergency lane, that means that there's very likely an accident with wounded people on the other end.
Which means that if you follow the ambulance you'll arrive at the scene of the accident, be a general ass and make things worse because you've just plugged one route for emergency vehicles.

I'd wager it's one of those "maximum fine" things, i.e. there's a range of 10€ to 600€ and it never gets to that. Either that or it's that high because you'll have to have a judge decide on it (which is going to be extremely rare) and then you better make it worth it.
Something along those lines. I'm just guessing.
