Status: Apparently Candy Crush has been replaced by Farm-whatever in Windows 1903.
Also, you can now have folders in your start menu again! Much amaze, good feature.
-
@Tsaukpaetra ... that's not new.

@pie_flavor said in WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else:
@Tsaukpaetra ... that's not new.
Shows how much I use the Start Menu or play Farm-whatever. ο
-
New Start Menu is completely different. It puts app results and web results on different tabs now. Now, if only I could get rid of the web results and have it show the app results by default...
Also, I don't want tabs in my Start Menu. That is a sign that the Start Menu is maybe getting too complicated.
-
I love how searching for something like "system settings" shows up Bing search results immediately, but the actual local results take about 5 seconds to load.
-
@topspin Mine doesn't show me web results - I assume these disappeared when I disabled Cortana.

@levicki If you're on Enterprise, are you even looking at MS? You should be looking at your company's servers. Maybe your IT department tried to push it?

Nope, this is at home. The reason I am on Enterprise LTSC is to avoid "feature" updates.
At work we are on regular Enterprise (non-LTSC) which did get updated to 1903.
Point is that LTSC should never be offered 1903.
I was just wondering if your IT was trying to push an update that Windows was then going "WTF are you trying to do?!?". Theory blown. Which makes it an MS then...

WU = Windows Update, I presume.

Microsoft proves again why Windows Update is made of 100% fail. "I must rebootz nau to install updatez! Omglol!!1!11!" with the options of "Try in one hour", "Ok" and "Reboot now" where "Ok" apparently means "Reboot in 15 minutes". Why even have that option? Why not just "Reboot now" and "Try later"? So pressing "Ok" will just cause the effect of waiting for a reboot, think that it wont happen after all, start shooting aliens and then have the computer restart without warning in the middle of shooting aliens. Where are the fucking UX people at MS? Did they get fired along with the QA department? Gah!
No, I did not lose anything. Just getting my time wasted by waiting for feature updates to install. A productive use of that time would be the forceful removal of the reproductive organs of the designer of that dialog box to prevent further spread of those genes.

Whenever I read one of your posts I was wondering whether it ever occured to you that you are as dumb as a rock?
Today I realized that given DunningβKruger effect there's 0% chance of that ever happening. Life must be a bliss when you are so unaware of your own shortcomings and so easily finding imaginary "flaws" in others.

While thatβs a good response to the post in question, itβs also a tad ironic because you love to reply βNO U!β yourself.

@topspin Right. At least I'm up front about it.

@pie_flavor I think I must be on Earth-73 too, because I don't have these problems with Windows either. The worst I had was my profile getting fucked, but that was back in 1703 I think. Also, Edge fucks itself over occasionally, requiring reinstall, which affects some store apps that apparently use the html control (Netflix and Hulu). Maybe I'm on Earth-72?
ETA: two different computers. The profile fuckups were my laptop, the Edge fuckups were my desktop, which is an upgrade from Win7.

Status: Tried to install something that needs .NET 4.8. It tried to install the framework and failed (some kind of 0x8000 error). So I thought I'd manually install the framework to help it along:

My new 11" Dell laptop showed up. I fully intended to wipe it, install Linux Mint, and move the Windows license to a VM in case I ever needed it.
It came with Windows 10 Home in S Mode. To log in without connecting to your Microsoft account, you have to put it in airplane mode so it doesn't have an Internet connection, otherwise the "Use a local account" option is never even shown. But that was moot anyway, because it requires your Microsoft account credentials in order to disable S Mode, which is required in order to actually use the Command Prompt and recover your Windows license key. It caches your credentials, and on the next reboot it helpfully blows away the local account you worked hard to create.
I am now safely typing on it from the land of Linux Mint.

@TimeBandit right and that source presents the info in a reasonable manner, describes the actual problem, lists solutions, says updates are still a good thing despite the occasional bug, and, most importantly, does not say "micro$uuux windows 10 spyware broken update every update sucks steam haxx"
Also wtf is with that guy and using that USAF standard desktop no1 picture on all his Micro$haft Updatez suxx articles? What's he actually trying to say there?

Yep, contrary to paranoid wackos fear mongering and linux zealots constant howling, average user's experience with Windows 10 is smooth and uneventful. WU included.

Why is it such a problem to have uninstall option for Edge? Or at least stop with that anti-competitive bullshit "Featured in Windows 10", "Don't switch", "There was a problem with PDF file association and it was reset", etc? If I have Adobe Reader installed and selected as default for PDFs why is Edge so hell-bent on being the default handler for PDF files?
Same reason other browsers constantly bitch about not being the default one and have 'make me default' option turned on in installer.

If I remember correctly, those other browsers do not hijack PDF extension when there are external programs handling it installed in the system and they also have an option to "Never ask again" about being default.
Edge never hijacked pdf extension from me. Or any other extension, for that matter.
But I never tried to remove it - maybe it's somehow connected.
-
Edge always hijacks PDF extensions for me, and it never actually loads them. I just get a white screen. (Not sure if this is somehow related to corporate Group Policy or not.)

I use PDFs extensively, and have never experienced it. But I'm on a home machine not connected to AD and not using Group Policy at all.
-
@levicki For the same reason as the last five times you asked - because Edge is what hosts webview components in MS platform apps.
-

If that particular Cortana CPU usage issue is prevented by disabling Bing Search then most corporate users won't ever see it because most admins worth their salt will kill everything potentially privacy invading with fire.
Parse better. Disabling Bing search was the cause, and re-enabling it was one of the fixex.

IOW, the fix is worse than the issue

@TimeBandit depends on how badly you want to not have your CPU held hostage by MiΒ’ro$oft.

Disabling it via GPO is also a fix.
Finally, Born also mentions that you can enable or disable the the Do not allow web search policy under Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Search to resolve the issue.

Have they fixed the "WU uses exponential time algorithm" bug by now? Because I've been told they have at least three times, and I've had it on XP, Vista, and 7. Will be interesting to wait for it to surface on 10.
