Yup, definitely an ID-100-T error. Kind of stupid oversight, between the wrong storage driver and then flubbing up the NIC settings and not realizing the "warning" thrown by Failover Cluster Validation was actually a "this isn't going to work, stupid" error.

Did a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation to confirm it's not going to be a problem, but I should probably get on that at some point this month...

Yeah, I did the estimate before the deadline, but filed an extension rather than the return, because I didn't want to try to get a last minute appointment with $taxCompany when I didn't really need to. Unless I screwed up rather badly, I should be getting money back, at least from the feds. I didn't do any calculations for the state, but hopefully it isn't too different; as long as the definition of "head of household" is the same, I should be ok.

One thing I learned from calculating the estimate, the tax reform didn't make filing any easier. If anything, there's even more copying numbers from one form to another. You may not need to file all those forms, but you still need to fill them out to figure out whether you need to file them.

And the free online filing site the IRS links to doesn't help all that much. It has all the forms and instructions, but I only found one place it transferred a number between forms (and the SPA structure doesn't let you look at more than one form at a time, and copy/paste doesn't work, so you have to remember the number you want when switching forms), and its "basic arithmetic" is somewhat lacking. Some lines (subtract line 8 from line 7; if less than zero, enter 0) are calculated and you can't enter a number yourself. Others, where you'd like it to do the calculation (65% of line 10, or add lines 11 through 18), nope; use a calculator yourself.

I think the main risk is colliding with the other motorcycles.

The main risk is probably the carnies. The sphere could be on fire and the main risk would still be the carnies.

I don't get it, Google said me "carnie" is anyone that works in a circus

Carnivals, not circuses. In popular culture, at least, they have the stereotype of being, at best, a bit shady and disreputable. The midway games are portrayed as rigged and the workers who operate them as con men, letting you win just enough to keep playing, but never enough to recoup what you spent to play. Sometimes they are portrayed as engaging in even more nefarious goings-on behind the scenes of the carnival.

Yeah, I just finished the actual numbers and I'm indeed getting a refund so I have like three years to file. I'm not gonna lie, even if I had dependents I'd probably claim the minimum allowances on my W-4 just so I would be guaranteed a refund and would have more time to file. My entire financial life is centered upon giving me the maximum time possible to make any given decision.

I've used that before. And then I got audited because I copied the wrong number from federal to state, so... I'll stick with the tax filing software I get on discount through my bank. :)

Spanning several days, I think, I had my own glitchfest of playing (with) lots of pixelated and in many other ways crap at 1440p, so I sort I understand the excitement. In a DF sort of way.

An actual PSOne off the eBay would have been a better deal. I remember reading a review on the internets that this thing is so underpowered, the emulators can't even deliver the same framerate as the real deal. But who knows, these days they have things like updates :>

I'm obliged to add that modern consoles are utter shite, of course.

Yeah, it takes a while to setup the emulator right. And it doesn't help that ePSXe 2.0 line has introduced some updates that make emulation 10x slower. It's better to stick with 1.9.25, but you won't find this information anywhere.

Well, there's a very high chance it's already dead or soon to be dead. PSX was known for mechanical failures of the drive. Also, you're going to spend shitloads of money on memory cards.

I've had a few PSXes and out of those, the only one whose drive failed (at least last time I looked at any of them) was the first generation one with some plastic part that wore out, which was replaced with metal on later models. And even then it would still work if the console was stood upright or upside-down.

  • I've been involved in retrogaming events for more than ten years, and people bring old PS1s (and countless other retro game consoles) that still work fine. Of course, it depends on how much use they got, but the failure rate for later models isn't that high AFAIK. On the other hand, early models are a time bomb.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

@marczellm You can, and I know of programs that work exactly like that. There's only one thing that absolutely has to be in the actual executable for a program, and that's the main entry point for the program (and details about what shared libraries to load). That can then delegate into a DLL for the actual main code of the application.

  • I just completed Syberia, a point and click game from 2002 (so this is spoilers for that game, but I doubt anyone will care).

You're a lawyer from New York, riding a train from France that goes to some place in Siberia, to find a person who disappeared there. Your train stops somewhere in Russia, in a (seemingly) abandoned soviet industrial mining complex. A strange man steals a thing from your train, meaning you can't continue.
Talking to this man, you discover he's living alone, obsessed with a random opera singer he saw once, several decades ago. She was last seen in public 15 years ago, claiming she was retiring because she was ill. He says he'll only give your thing back if you can bring that opera star back to his industrial mining complex for a performance.
It's clear he's quite insane and you can't spend months tracking down a forgotten opera star who is probably dead by now. What's your next action?

    • Distract him and steal your thing back
    • Find or make something you can trade him for your thing
    • Trick him with a costume and an old recording or something

Well, apparently the reasonable action according to the game is to call your mother, who coincidentally just started dating someone who happens to have dated her in the past, so he knows where she retired to, which coincidentally happens to be really close to the industrial mining complex you happen to be in, which coincidentally happens to have an airship that's programmed to take you there and back. Then go there and convince her to fly back and sing for the first time in years because a random obsessed fan wants her to.

But wait, here comes the best part. After all this ridiculously convoluted plot, there's a shocking turn of events where the crazy man goes crazy and locks her up in a cage, presumably so he can keep her there for the rest of her life. What kind of long intricate adventure will you have to go through now to rescue her?

Spoiler You use a pair of pliers to break the lock and let her out.

This has to have been intentional humour by the developers.

That would be Syberia II, I think. The first one may have helped to understand the plot better (for those actually paying attention anyway). It's certainly strange, but I can't find anything convoluted or shocking there. That and the comical art style makes it pretty much a modern fairy tale, suitable for almost all ages.
Now, the puzzles, as point-and-clickers used to have, do border on game logic and no trace of logic whatsoever. I might add that the long awaited Syberia 3 was a bit of a let down, what with going a bit Lara Croftey, but all in all I'd easily say the series is one of "they don't make 'em like that anymore".
