@kazitor
You could argue, but I'm afraid it's pretty much implied by the Book (see: https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/1509009), which is therefore true. I suggest using the Hamster-Elderberry Defense, after which you change the subject to something "more interesting" as if the argument was settled in your favor.

I bet Microsoft would have had a better time pushing Edge if they had made Google its default search engine. Bing is just bad.
People keep saying that but I really don't see it. I have bing as my default search engine on my home pc and phone for Microsoft rewards, and Google at work because I can't be bothered to change it. They both seem much of a muchness to me

My CPAP changed my life. Also my wife's since she was the one who had to listen to my snoring
-
@Jaloopa Bing's real problem is that it's known to be "bad". The moment someone sees a Bing searchbar they typically try to go straight to Google without even trying it out, solely based on reputation. Under those circumstances you can understand why Microsoft pushes so hard for it.
I've barely used it myself (preferring DuckDuckGo), but on a computer that hadn't had the default changed, I was impressed by Bing's recognition of sections in a page: letting you jump straight to one from the search results and possibly even showing snippets from each, if I remember correctly.
-
@kazitor I've given Bing a chance many times (just like Edge), and every time I ended up hating it (and also Edge, but not as much).

There's a telecom (O2) running a big ad campaign on how "we don't make annoying unwanted calls to people trying to sell them stuff". Yeah, as their main and only selling point. That's like me proudly calling all my acquaintances to tell them "Hey! Did you know I don't steal pens from my workplace?"
But the saddest part is they're actually just a brand owned a Telefonica, aka the absolute undisputed leader of the scum that are telecom companies (at least they beat the local ones, I'm sure other countries have their own champions).
So it's really more like a well known serial killer putting on a fake moustache and going door to door telling people "hello! I'm new in this neighbourhood, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I don't kill people at all".

@izzion Well, it is an official cable, and even though those cost 20 times as much, they still don't last.
How else do you expect Apple to make a profit?

There's an insurance company who's advertising that they pay out on all valid claims. The kind of advert that makes you think "surely that's the bare minimum you should be doing, have you really got nothing else to offer?"

Without the second sentence, it would have been a perfect follow-up to @HardwareGeek's post just above.

Status: My birthday "party" next week seems to have taken on a life of its own. At first, I only planned for the regular "take my parents somewhere fancy".
Then my mother remarked that I definitely need a new suit because my youngest brother is marrying in the summer (I myself deem the existing suit perfectly suitable but what do I know?) So she had me looking for hotels near the restaurant in Hamburg so we could go shopping the next day.
This made the groom (i.e. youngest brother) remark that he needs a new suit as well. Which in turn led to me inviting him to my party because thus we can both buy suits the next day.
But inviting him without his fiancée would be in bad tast so I invited her as well.
At which point I said: "Fuck it, we're going all in!" and invited the rest of the closer family as well.
So instead of three persons we're now nine.
Two years ago we were also nine people (40th birthday) and I spent 500€ on the proceedings in the same restaurant. Not to mention that if all goes well tomorrow, we'll be able to not only celebrate my birthday but also my promotion.

Status: Cleaned out the dust filters for my home (gaming) desktop. Runs much quieter now.
I really should have cleaned the CPU fan more thoroughly than I did, but that would involve removing the CPU fan assembly, which would involve new thermal paste to re-mount it, and I don't have any stocked.

@Benjamin-Hall said in Microsoft debuts Bosque – a yet another pointless programming language:
Knowing the practical limitations and quirks of your instrument is critical. Otherwise you get people writing piano pieces that have 3 octave chords or impossibly quick jumps.
That reminded me of this amazingly beautiful piece of art and I don't know where else to put it:
PR request: embedded midi support, there's no possible way that could go wrong or be annoying under any circumstance
-
@PleegWat: Those things are dust magnets. I clean the filter on my desktop every week, and it still accumulates a layer of dust.
-
@hungrier: what is it supposed to sound like? Here it sounds like a cacophony.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9FImc2LOr8YMMV depending on your midi playback capability and/or if the Space Jam theme song is constantly playing in your head for over 20 years
-
Hmmm. Still sounds pretty bad:
spacejam1.mp3I tried using sine waves instead of a piano, but it's only a little bit better:
spacejam2.mp3Now I feel like writing a better WAV-to-MIDI converter. Curse you @hungrier, my todolist was already full!

Just so long as he doesn't wear his birthday suit to the restaurant.

Status: Too may options, not enough data to really tell the difference. It's the one part of shopping online that I don't like--I can't see and feel the objects. In this case, cases. No-scale pictures just don't do justice and don't help me know how much room there'll be for cables, or if the power-supply cables will reach comfortably to the top of the case. I dislike the trend of putting the PSU on the bottom because it makes wiring things annoying, since most of the big stuff's up high in many cases.

Status: Back from the Easter holidays just to see that everything breaks down when you're not there to babysit it.
Log in, be greeted by Thunderbird not being able to fetch email. Check something on the intranet sites, Firefox crashes (probably someone installed an update again). Rdp doesn't work. Have dozens of mails from Jenkins/Cron because something that's been working flawlessly stopped working (some IT-provided service started throwing a segfault). Good lord, stop fuckingupdatingbreaking shit while I'm not there.Bonus Status: It appears I'm now lead of a project I have no fucking clue clue about. BRB,
