I'm not sure what's more unsettling: the content of your message or that you have access to a sooper-seekret side channel we do not.

quite often the garage feels as a red state
There are some vocal conservatives there, undeniably. However, there are also vocal liberals, and there is a lot of back-and-forth between them. Yesterday was certainly an example of that, though not a particularly good example, as there was much more heat than light. But both sides voice their opinions there, and as I've said, I've learned things from both sides. I don't understand the people who call it an echo chamber, because it is not, or doesn't seem to me, dominated by either side. (The voice that does tend to be missing is the middle. I try to fill that spot on some topics, at least.)
Scott Alexander wrote about that IIRC re: the culture wars thread on SSC's subreddit. People complained about it being overwhelmingly right-wing despite it being vast majority liberal. The reason was simply that they were very much Silicon Valley / Seattle types and very rarely got the chance to actually interact with right wing people, and so interacting with even a minor proportion of them felt overwhelming because it was so unfamiliar.

Umm... I would say the content, by far? Because having 's email address (or similar) doesn't seem scary at all...

@Karla said in The Polygeekery ban is a false flag operation!:
What makes this worse than Fox's behavior that it has a ban 3x as long?
I think you’re assuming a bit too much consistency here.
Whoever did it might not have thought it 3x worse than Fox, even less bad, and just decided “3 days sounds reasonable” without doing intensive research on the exact amount of time historically given for such a rare event. Admins are people, too, not perfect robots.
A 3 day ban isn’t the end of the world though (assuming it is, in fact, temporary).

@topspin said in The Polygeekery ban is a false flag operation!:

Indeed. Still, might it be too much to suggest that a ban require at least two mods to agree on it? A similar thing might also be helpful to minimize the chance of stuff like what happened a few years back where downvotes here were suddenly being shown unanonymized to everyone, evidently without any notice whatsoever to anyone (I understand that even some of the mods were taken by surprise).

You're talking to the person who put "2002" in their original account name because that's the year it was created. Tsaukpaetra wasn't yet a public thing at that point. Well, at least in association with GMail...
Edit: Based on Internet anecdote, apparently if you delete your Google Account, that username is not freed up for use elsewhere, so it's gone forever. Well, oh well...

That was actually quite funny. There was a sudden downtick in downvotes and most of them only come through Beto now.

Also where's @boomzilla? I wonder if he knows anything, but it seems he hasn't posted anything after the ban happened.
It's the weekend. I'm normally not around much. Especially now that it's Spring and I've got a massive backlog of stuff to do around the house.
The temporary ban was not preceded by any internal staff discussions or private warnings to my knowledge. However, this all happening over the weekend, staff communication has been sporadic. I don't really want to say more than that right now.
-
@boomzilla said in The Polygeekery ban is a false flag operation!:

I've unbanned him and given him an official warning to chill out in non-garage topics. I suggest everyone else does the same.
I plan to be extra vigilant in not posting garage sentiments in non-garage categories and fervently hope everyone else does the same.
-
@boomzilla I don't watch every thread on the forum, so maybe I missed something, but I don't think I've seen @Polygeekery leak the garage anywhere beyond an occasional snarky post here and there - unlike a certain Canadian and a German who keep doing that, repeatedly, with no repercussions. One of them started this particular shitstorm, too. I mean I don't want to see them banned either, I think they're hilarious, but the hypocrisy here is astounding.
What was the justification for the ban, and who did it?
-
@blek said in The Polygeekery ban is a false flag operation!:
What was the justification for the ban, and who did it?
It was @ben_lubar who enacted the ban. Based on what I've heard from Ben, it was based on @Polygeekery's posts in the "Fuck this place" thread. When a ban is made, there's a reason field for the banner to fill in. Ben entered, "take a break," which I think was good advice, but would have been better as a PM from a staff member rather than a ban (based on the way we've done things here in the past).
So, at this point, he's definitely taken a break. I've communicated privately with @Polygeekery. I think that tempers flared on all sides (the Discord chat was very garagey and IMO fairly ridiculous, but I would say that.
I think that in general @Polygeekery and the rest of the people who normally post in the garage have been pretty good at containing garage stuff in the garage. As I've said, I regret engaging @Lorne-Kates in his garagey way outside of the garage (which he otherwise avoids). I'm going to commit to not doing that, even though it feels good to me to lash out at his garagey trolling where he can see it as opposed to ignoring / Jeffing it away. I feel especially bad that this turned into a conflagration that ended up affecting other people.
-
@boomzilla Alright, thanks for explaining the situation. I'll bury my valaška for now.
One thing, though: Yes, @Lorne-Kates "generally avoids" the Garage - and instead he just goes absolutely mental once in a while and posts a completely unhinged rant outside of it. That's not keeping out of the Garage, that's just shitting up everything else. Again, I don't want him banned or anything like that, and when this shit happens it gets Jeffed to where it belongs pretty fast, so I don't really want anything to change, but I feel like this needs to be pointed out.

Yeah, totally. I feel like I had been letting lots of his little troll posts pass and then finally responded to one, because I was kind of pissed at him for the emotional sabotage of his previous breakdown in the garage and then continuing to post garage shit outside. Especially after he created a ridiculous actual garage thread that he abandoned/ignored. He's made multiple posts that I just kind of ignored and so did everyone else but eventually I responded, which turned out....poorly.
In general, I try to ignore stuff when it doesn't create a fuss. But I think he's a special kind of pestilence that isn't saying things by accident and need to be addressed.
-
@boomzilla I'm totally fine with this kind of "pestilence" not being addressed by any mod action at all. People get to let off steam, I get to downvote them, or argue with them, or ignore them - it's all fine.

Oh brother. I figured it out. It's if the username is mentioned more than once.
It maxes out at 3, I guess?
