Status: Due to the slow but inevitable putrefaction of the Windows Phone app store, and due to a sweetheart deal from Google, I've jumped ship to Android.
Dear Android app devs,
While it's unwanted, I can accept stupid advertising inside your apps. I'll throw it away as soon as possible, but it's your app, I'm already engaged, it's not unreasonable to try to get my attention for whatever bull-- *brrrng!* ... your marketing team wants to shove in my face.
However, notifications are reser-- *brrrng!* ... reserved for stuff that actually needs my immediate attention. New calls, email, instant messages, pizza guy is at my door, etc. It is not *brrrng!* ... for shit like "You've won the opportunity to buy something at 10% off!". Doing so will lead me to kill all notifications immediately, probably kill your app, and maybe even interf-- *brrrng!* ... interfere with that feature for other people.
Fuck Amazon with a rake.
P.S. If someone is trying to call me, a great way to not have me answer is to use a non-existent area code. That really instills confidence that everything isn't above board. Also, when I forward your call to a screening service, the best way to have me block you forever is to hang up and immediately redial. Because why would I want to know who I'm actually talking with?
Way until they start bothering you for reviews. 1 star reviews are good way to get developer attention.
STATUS It's Friday and I completely forgot my Christmas jumper. :(

@kazitor @sweaty_gammon what problems are you having with TS?

This came out of nowhere in your rant. What did they do?
I'm assuming the same thing that happened to me. My carrier auto-installed a new uninstallable Amazon app alongside the old uninstallable Amazon app, except the new one sends you advertisements disguised as unblockable notifications about every 2 minutes. I had to disable the entire app to get some peace and quiet. And the old app still works just fine and never notifies you at all.
-
@mott555 so someone at Amazon actually thought it was a good idea?!

@pie_flavor I can and I have. I can also block them per-category, when apps are kind and polite enough to separate utility notifications ("I'm downloading this book") from transactional notifications ("Your pre-order was released") from targeted marketing notifications ("TJ Mott has released a new book!") from generic marketing notifications ("Blue Tuesday! Get 15% off! (Prime Only)"). Sadly, neither Kindle nor Audible nor Alexa have any categorization; all notifications are a single blob that I have to turn off as a whole.
@stillwater Near-simultaneous notifications across the three apps I mentioned just now for an Amazon Music promotion. That my account isn't even eligible for.

drag the notification halfway offscreen, tap the gear that appearslong-press the notification for about 2 seconds, and tap disable notifications. Easy.FTFL

It might be
ng serve
tbh. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to pickup changes correctly or it says it compiles fine and VSCode is having a melt down.
-
@sweaty_gammon Oh yes. I never ever trust the server to detect changes except for minor cosmetic changes. Otherwise it is always stop the server make changes and start again.
If you're telling me even after stopping and starting the server the changes are not detected, that is super WTF worthy.

It doesn't complain properly about types mismatching. It is just a bit flakey all round tbh.
The .NET core compiler isn't much better either.

Status: Considering starting a Minecraft Bedrock Edition server since it supports Android/Gear VR/Xbox and some other things, although it is not compatible with the mainline Java edition. However, the game server (PocketMine) is written in PHP...
EDIT: Nvm, not going that route. PocketMine is an unofficial server which supports basically no game features at all. The alternative is paying Mojang a monthly fee and having them host the game. Homey don't play that. I self-host or I don't play at all.
There are many different server platforms. Most of them are PHP, and I think one is C#. But Mojang recently released the official Bedrock server software.

I was scratching my head over these sentences. "Unzip the container file"? If a user is going to know what "unzip" means, do you really need to call it a "container file"? Also, "how to" should probably be "how-to"....
Well, I'll try it...
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server
If you're already too lazy to set your RPATH correctly, would it really be that much work to put this line in a shell script instead, so the user doesn't need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH himself?!

Isn't it the whole motivation for the story? The guy tries to commit suicide then his guardian angel shows him how much worse the world would be without him

Strictly speaking, George doesn't actually attempt suicide; he's just about to, when Clarence (the guardian angel) jumps into the river, prompting George to jump in to rescue him instead of jumping in to kill himself.
I don't think that's too much of a spoiler, as it happens quite early in the movie. It's the set-up for the movie's main plot.
If you haven't seen it, you should.
-
@HardwareGeek One thing that's always bothered me about that film. If he was able to escape from the icy waters so easily after jumping in, what were the chances of his suicide attempt being successful? I suspect that most people probably regret their decision on the way down, so he definitely probably would've tried to swim to shore.
-
Status: Holy fuck this is taking a long time...
All I wanted was a quick proof-of-concept test/demo. I didn't know it would be cooking for five different flavors of Android!
-
@brie there have been studies based on interviews with bridge suicide survivors suggesting the majority regret it on the way down but there's a big ol' sampling bias there since the people who manage to swim to shore are going to be the ones with the strongest urge to survive

I didn't know Apple made wipes!
Is it called the iWipe ?

You know what is quite funny.
It says on the blue shield it says they are "Twenty Four hours". If I bought another bag of wipes could I only use them 9-5?

Worse is that you only get better ships by winning, so too bad if you can't win.
Also, the backgrounds do not look nice at 1080p.

Yeah, but not for years. The worst seems to have passed (). Multiple hot baths were my only functional palliative, the ibuprofen did nothing.
