WTF Bites

@anotherusername Yeah. I'll add that bit of information to the post to make it clear
-
@hungrier wow, how does that even happen?
And here I wondered why you would censor the OK button.
-
@hungrier I wondered why you'd censor literally anything that might've made them useful. But,
-
wow, how does that even happen?
I guess they're rendering the UI elements in a bitmap buffer, and that red cross is the default content that is displayed when rendering fails.
-
-
@topspin That's what WinForms does when a control throws an exception during construction.
-
@Tsaukpaetra What a load of pony.
-
@Tsaukpaetra something something blakeyrant something something internetpointzzzz
-
@Tsaukpaetra something something blakeyrant something something internetpointzzzz
So what you're saying is, my internet points are worth less than @Gąska's, so when users are downboating my posts they don't matter as much?

You're not so big.

It's a pony? I posted it for the bait meme.

Yup.

@Tsaukpaetra i knew he looked familiar...

@Zerosquare Need to get a Samsung if you want continuous undetermined immersion in helium.

Fun fact:
In this country they've subtitled the opening theme's lyrics. But when the series' title is shown the last line in the lyrics is still being sung.
Rather than subtitling both the title and the last line in the lyrics — which would have been perfectly reasonable — they've decided to make the localized title "A Vida É Injusta" (ie "Life is Unfair") so that they could use just one subtitle.

That's already been posted in a couple of other threads, IIRC.

I post ponies and get dislikes.
What gives?
@Gąska... didn't post... a pony...?

So in other words, this is totally okay for those downvoters?

@Tsaukpaetra I don't know. I still see ponies there. And a dapper dragon.

You're one of those guys that would scour a movie showing just a hint of titty so you can bump the rating, aren't you? :P
-
@Tsaukpaetra I said "I don't know" because I really don't know the exact criteria they're using. If it's simply because there're ponies, then they might still downvote it. But I laud the drake's natty outfit.

Too many movies lack sufficient titty.
-
apt is giving me an error. Why?
Because Google changing a value apparently breaks downloading the list of updates from their repository.
-
@Atazhaia Well, it's a 3rd party and their trust certificate has changed, sounds like a reasonable security measure, in theory.
-
@topspin It's not talking about certificate, just the Origin value, which is just a field in the manifest.

Reason why Open Source sucks: Ubuntu maintainers believe "package description" is the same as "user friendly name". They probably thought the raw package name is too scary for GUI users, so they opted for replacing the very useful information what is being updated with absolutely useless crap (but that at least looks like proper English). I can't even hover over the shortened description to see full text, so I'd at least be able to make a guess what package it even is.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF Bites:

That is rather obvious ... if you use them to liberally they devaluate.
-
@Gąska That sounds more like a reason why Ubuntu sucks, because that's an Ubuntu "feature". The Mint update manager displays both the package name and description and has a much nicer UI too.
-
@Gąska That sounds more like a reason why Ubuntu sucks, because that's an Ubuntu "feature".
It's a common attitude in Linux open source projects - to have the non-power users only as an afterthought, and either completely ignore their needs (the better option), or not do any research before deciding what the major pain points are, and fix the issues with minimal effort possible, without checking if the solution even works.
The Mint update manager displays both the package name and description and has a much nicer UI too.
A rare exception.
-
@Gąska It's almost as if they're built for free by hobbyists who have no incentive to do market research and develop for people with different needs than themselves...
-
@anonymous234 it's almost as if free hobbyist work leads to bad software.
-
@Gąska At least you get what you pay for

That explains why Win10 was free

Exactly. I've paid the price for shitty software, so now let me rant about how shitty it is.

But the non-open source OSs (Windows, Mac) wouldn't show you any details at all and just give you the options (Mac) "Install now"/ "Install Later" or (Windows) "Install Now" / there is no second option.
-
@topspin dunno about Mac, but Windows Update always tells me what updates it's going to install. If it's updates of Windows, it's usually just "Aktualizacja zabezpieczeń dla Microsoft Windows (KB123456789)", but if it's for specific programs, it always tells me which program the update is for.
-

The Ubuntu way is better than this gibberish nonsense
-
@Gąska The thing is "Windows" is developed as a big monolith, so all the updates are "Update for Windows". Whereas Ubuntu is developed as an aggregation of thousands of projects so the same update will look like "Update for libwhatever4.5". To >99.9% of users they're both updates to internal OS components, so I'd argue they don't need to display a name or description at all.
The problem is if you care about a certain program, e.g. Firefox or the MySQL server. Because Lunix distros consider those to be internal components too, they mix the updates in the same place and force you to look at them.
To be fair to Ubuntu, I believe it does hide many packages under "Ubuntu core components" or something similar in the updater.

Additionally, are those being installed, or removed? Because the same window is apparently used to denote both!

The answer is in the big bold text at the top
Also, when you remove a package, you don't have to download anything

Except when updating something ends up removing something else.
This literally happened to me yesterday during the (surprisingly smooth) distro upgrade.

Aside from the fact that, if that's a problem, it should be able to fix it all by itself (I put the chances of simply restarting the Audio Service not fixing it at approximately 0.1%, and it should at least try that first)... the audio's working just fine.
-
@anotherusername oh, this is fun: opening the volume control mixer and clicking the slider to test the volume apparently fixed it.
-
Dunno if this is a WTF Bite - the software is functioning perfectly.
Whenever something overhyped happens, like the final Smash Bros Ultimate direct, I like watching a ton of reaction videos. Today YouTube suggests a SSBU Direct reaction - by the SSB club at my university. It's not popular or anything - only 40 views.
I have never searched for my university on YouTube. I have never Googled anything related to entertainment from them.
Skynet.
On the other hand, I didn't know there was an SSB club. I may join that.
-
@pie_flavor Have you ever accessed YouTube from your university, while logged in?
-
@anotherusername Yes.
