@jbert said in EU Copyright Directive/Article 13:
Article 11 is about links and making quoting illegal without a license.
Which violates the first amendment's right to a free press, so good luck getting the US government to go along with you.
There'll likely be exceptions, but that's the very short spirit of the law: they want to crack down on news aggregators who "steal" eyeballs from the content generator.

Making spam illegal is the wrong level to be handling it at. Most of it probably isn't even under EU jurisdiction.

Good lord.
Have fun getting blocked from most of the internet, guys.

Those in favor say they’re fighting for content creators
How quickly they forget. They already tried this a couple of years ago. German newspapers complained about Google linking to their news stories, so Google stopped doing it.
And their traffic went down and they made less money, not more.
-
@El_Heffe Same as in Spain.
-
@El_Heffe said in EU Copyright Directive/Article 13:

They didn't forget, they felt strong-armed into that. "What do you mean, you're not only not paying us for free advertisement, you'll also stop the free advertisement. WHHHAAAA." Apparently their idea is to strong-arm back by making it mandatory on a bigger market than Germany/Spain alone.
As much as I get annoyed by Google for other things (they deserve all the fines they're getting), I hope Google will just do the same thing again and fuck all publishers demanding this until they cave.Oh EU, so hit and miss. The whole "publicly funded science must be Open Access" idea last week was great, and now you're back with this idiocy.

I know it's not the place or time to discuss it, and I don't know all the details, but going by what you said here, I can think of a few ways it can backfire.
Okay, back to mourning the loss of free internet access.

@ben_lubar can we filter out all EU members from WTDWTF?

Can I still have vote- and read-only access? If there's no character input then we wouldn't need a text input filter, right?
Filed under: This was a joke. Please don't try it

Does the law require filtering username and password fields?

This is really quite interesting. I'd never heard of France's fiscal police before, for example.

Police, or policy?
-
@Gąska I never misspell. Watch the video.
-
Though I don't really see what's so weird about dedicated law enforcement body specifically for taxation. Doesn't every country have something like that?

Cardinal Fang, fetch the pretty stylesheet!
-
@Gąska I was more referring to the stop-you-and-pull-you-over thing.
-
@pie_flavor well, I didn't watch the video, so I wouldn't know. Can tax agents really do that? I thought it's reserved for the police and the transport safety agency.

With net neutrality gone in the US and this copyright reform in the EU it seems like it is only a matter of time before only megacorporations have a website and you will only be able to visit websites that your ISP allows. In other words, turning the Web into cable TV 2.0.
-
@magnusmaster I can't believe someone can seriously equate mandatory automatic filtering of user content with those Netflix backend shenanigans.
-
-
Don't worry, guys, I just received news that the upload filters will be developed by VW!

@Lorne-Kates I believe the EU has a special "Fuck Lorne, give him no money" clause in all of these directives. Hopefully when Brexit happens we retain the same in the UK.

Quite frankly we are lucky to be alive. I barely survived the fall of net neutrality. The family and I had to bunker down until the worst of the roaming swarms of reapers had passed.

If only they'd outlawed it for concerts as well, then the rest of the audience can at least see the artists instead of a sea of smartphones
-
@JBert they'll fix this and all other problems with 80 separate bills, each saying "Copyright Directive doesn't apply under these very specific circumstances..."
Edit: I meant to reply to @pie_flavor. You posted the exact moment I wanted to click "reply".

I've posted in the funny stuff thread like 3 times since the vote, and the meme police hasn't locked me up yet.
Maybe we, too, will survive.

Fuck me sideways with a chainsaw.
How about you fucking read it before voting on it.And don't tell me it's too long and/or complicated or some bullshit excuse like that. First off, it's your fucking job to do this. Second, if it's too long to read before voting on it, then it's too long to be let loose on the public.
Fucking politicians.

I heard they had Nancy Pelosi as a guest motivational speaker prior to the vote
-
@M_Adams She should have used her magnificent long speech powers to read out the entire text of the measures. Maybe then they'd have known what they were voting for.
I jest, even she couldn't talk that long.

The last guy who tried that got removed from the room within the first chapter.

@Gąska For reading the full text of an article? Boy, they really don't like being told they're tyrannical.
-
@topspin said in EU Copyright Directive/Article 13:

Maybe they wanted to take the US approach and decide they have to pass the bill in order to find out what's in the bill.
-

It takes a lot of time and meetings to get the details of a bribe worked out properly...
