@ben_lubar Anyone who codes e-voting systems is too incompetent to know e-voting is a very bad idea. With e-voting you have to trust there are no bugs or backdoors on the hardware, OS, compiler, OS utilities and every single layer of abstraction and libraries your software builds on. And there WILL be bugs and backdoors. In my country the 2015 elections used e-voting for elections in the capital city, and the company that was in charge of the e-voting systems had the certificates they used to sign everything accessible from the Internet, so ANYONE could change the results. The person who found out this got arrested by the gov't and had his PC confiscated, but the courts ruled that the company in charge of e-voting was too incompetent to live. There are only three reasons for e-voting to exist: malice, stupidity or both.

RE: Lime scooters
If any company tried to do something like this in my country, all the scooters would get stolen in less than 24 hours. And of course they would be laughed at instead of given 250 million dollars to piss away.

RE: WTF Bites
Today I was developing a feature to upload/download files to a Dropbox account in a desktop app written in C#. You would think that the Dropbox C# SDK would allow cancellation tokens in case the network was down to allow the user to cancel the operation, since the Dropbox client is on top of HttpClient anyway. But it doesn't, because in the planet the Dropbox C# SDK developers live in there is no such thing as slow internet. So I have to start a thread and use Thread.Abort and hope that it works.

RE: `s/www\.//g`
@anotherusername I wasn't talking about hiding the www on urls. I think this is a bad idea for two reasons:
- urls with no www and www sometimes go to a different page
- they lie to the user which is extremely dangerous and can cause trouble

RE: Do not upgrade
At work I am working on a React app that uses
react-select
. By mistake my boss installed a different version of that package on his PC and that caused the app to not compile. The kicker is that my boss installed a newer minor version. Shouldn't only major version updates have breaking changes? I am insane for not updating packages unless there is a bug fix that I want or something else broke? -
RE: Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!
Here in Argentina the idiot government has finally mandated that everyone who arrives into the country with lots of coronavirus cases must remain in quarantine for 14 days. However, there is zero border control and everyone who arrives from all over the world go through migrations and customs together. This is Ezeiza international airport:
https://pic.twitter.com/csUVS74vFYOur idiot president also said that drinking hot beverages kills the virus which is completely false. They also have not shut down schools and universities, claiming that kids are not vulnerable, forgetting that adults work at schools. The teachers were constantly at strike during the Macri administration because they didn't like him, yet they go to work during a pandemic.
To make matters even worse, there is only one hospital authorized by the government to test people to see whether they have coronavirus, and they can only do eight tests a day. When the director of that hospital complained that they couldn't test everyone the government sacked her and hired someone who was convicted of embezzlement and theft. And these are the same guys who blatantly falsified inflation statistics for years, so it's not going to be a surprised that they will lie about how many people have coronavirus.
Mom is doing better, brother gets two weeks of home office. Sadly I get no home office at my company, everyone who doesn't get coronavirus symptoms goes to work. -
RE: Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!
Here in Argentina the government has once again proven its ineptitude by doing nothing at all to check anyone arriving into the country if they have fever. In fact, to stop the virus they did the only thing our government knows to do... ask people to sign a sworn declaration saying that they do not have the virus. Which did fuck all to stop the virus arriving. And I can't wait for chaos to ensue since our public hospitals, like everything ran by our government, are a disaster.
Me and my family were on vacation in USA and we arrived back home on Feb 25th. Yesterday my mom got sore throat and cough (but no fever), so thinking it might be coronavirus I told her to call a doctor. Doctor said that too much time happened since we got back, and that if she had coronavirus she wouldn't be able to get out of bed. Hopefully it's just a flu...

In other Argentinian news...
When the province of Mendoza, which is governed by the opposition, purchased ventilators, the government blocked that purchase and decreed that all purchases of ventilators must be handled by the national government, so that the president can give those ventilators to obedient people...
Business as usual for Peronists...

RE: WTF Bites
The Language Bar in my laptop with Windows 10 is completely FUBAR. I have two languages (Spanish and English) both with US International keyboard, which is the keyboard layout on my laptop. The language bar always shows the Spanish keyboard among the different available options, which is nowhere in the settings (I made sure to remove it), and will frequently change to Spanish keyboard by itself making programming a PITA. Also, sometimes choosing a language in the language bar doesn't work until I open the Settings app. Fuck the Windows 10 Language Bar.

Please suggest me good and cheap PS4 and PS5 games
I got an Amazon gift card so please suggest me some good and cheap PS4 and PS5 games to buy. Games I am considering:
Yakuza Zero
Dark SoulsSince everyone talks about Dark Souls I would like to play one to see what they are like but I have heard that in Dark Souls it is very easy to miss sidequests. I hate playing the game with a walkthrough or replaying the same game multiple times so are there games similar to Dark Souls in which you can't miss sidequests?

@cvi said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
OK, I've ignored the whole Secure Boot / TPM thing. Any tl;dr on wtf those are supposed to do?
DRM. Or at least that's the reason Windows 11 requires it

RE: Your files are right where you left them
I have a lot of trouble searching files on mobile. The UI hides the actual folder everything gets stored in and also filenames so sometimes it is hell to find a file I received on Whatsapp when I try to attach it to an e-mail. Now I know what old people feel when using a PC and I'm only 30.

When running npm version, how do I bump both patch and prerelease at the same time?
Are there any people who know npm here? I am developing a SPA and I have a question about
npm version
If the current release is 0.1.0 the next development version should be 0.1.1-beta-0, then subsequent development versions should bump the number after beta (so 0.1.1-beta-1, 0.1.1-beta-2, etc), then when the production release is ready it should have version 0.1.1.
However I can’t find a way to bump both patch and prerelease at the same time or remove prerelease for a version number without bumping patch using npm version. Can I do this with npm version?

@Tsaukpaetra Too bad they didn't go back to Aero which looked miles better than flat garbage
