It should've.

@pie_flavor Before Windows 10 Microsoft wouldn't install thirdparty crapware automatically on users PCs. And while I used games in my examples, this goes for any thirdparty app that gets installed by Microsoft without my permission on my PC. No, I don't need Foxit PDF Reader auto-installed when I got Acrobat DC.
(Which also is fun in that Microsoft auto-installs a PDF reader when they want you to use Edge for all your PDF needs.)
No, it'd install firstparty crapware, like Pinball and Solitaire and Minesweeper.
Continue.

Don't bother. pie_flavor lives in a parallel world where Windows 10 is the perfect OS, devoid of bugs and unwanted behavior.

Hey!
Don't worry, I've maxed out levels in the pony game by Gameloft. Now it's literally impossible to earn experience for me.

I cancelled that. I cancelled that a fucking year and a half ago. Except, at the beginning of last semester, it turned out I actually hadn't, so I assumed that I was just losing my marbles and silently cursed the loss of a couple hundred bucks and cancelled it for sure this time.

Continue.Oh, the pre-Win10 games included with Windows? Sure, a few simple games made/licensed by MS to be included with the OS. All free and without ads.
Compare that to the stuff MS installs from the store: Third-party games built around ads and/or microtransactions. (And a few first-party games too, as Solitaire Collection can go diaf.) And that's not the only problem with installing thirdparty apps either. Thirdparty apps are outside of the control of MS, so if they end up with security holes or malicious code, that's MS putting their customers at risk.
And there's the issue of trust. "MS installed this app for me so therefore it must be good." And then it turns out the password manager had piss-poor security so anyone could get the password database easily, and now all your account details are with criminals. Yeah...

Most people don't turn themselves off an on again daily. Usually they only do S0-S3 transitions (both ways).

Everything goes to auto-pay, and then so long as the number on the account is positive (or, relatively low on the credit accounts), I don't have any idea what or how much is doing anything wrt money...

TL;DR: During a massive fire, Verizon starts throttling the fire department's unlimited data connection to 0.5% of its normal speed, which makes their job significantly more difficult. When contacted, Verizon refuses to lift the throttling unless they switch to a plan costing twice as much.
(American phone companies must be running a perpetual competition to see which one can have the worst customer service and PR ; I can't find any other explanation.)
Fire alarm goes off at a Verizon cell tower and/or building.
Welp, guess we gotta go take care of that

You mean to tell me you think Microsoft didn't thoroughly and completely vet Candy Crush to make sure nothing like that was going on? Or that it doesn't vet every single app on the store for that? What do you think an app store is for? And that's the beauty of the UWP system - these are not Win32 apps. The grand totality of security exploits is about the same as you'd get with Android apps. Also, Microsoft doesn't install a password manager by default, so I don't know where you're getting that from. Anyway, what the fuck do ads or microtransactions have to do with it? You were complaining about the fact that it was a game in the first place.

Yeah, I really need to get better at looking at those statements. I have like two auto-pays on, and if the number isn't much changed from where I expect it to be based on those, I call it good, especially since I use PayPal for everything that counts so theoretically nothing should have my payment info that I wouldn't want to. Still, that's some serious bullshit.

Completely Fair Scheduling:
[…] Linus had gotten confused about when and where the Maintainer's Summit was going to be held this year. And most unfortunately, he has already scheduled a family vacation overlapping with the week of the Maintainer's Summit.
[…] ultimately there were only two choices that were workable:
- Have the Maintainer's Summit in Vancouver, without Linus.
- Move the Maintainer's Summit to Edinburgh, with Linus.
[…]
This means that the Maintainer's Summit will take place in Edinburgh, on Monday afternoon, October 22nd. As a reminder, the Maintainer's Summit is an invite-only workshop, with ~30 people attending.Source: https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/ksummit-discuss/2018-September/005308.html

Solitaire Collection can go diaf
It's getting more obnoxious than it used to be. (Video ads that pause if you take the focus away from them?! Seriously?)

"Ha! You can't shoot me because I shot myself first!"
The weird thing is that my Surface Book is setup to simply go to sleep when I close the lid. My desktop is set to shutdown when I press the power button.
So I can compare the two behaviours and I'm using my Book during "business hours" regularly (I'm using it, for example, as the computer for my SMART displays because the school's computer is a bit ... anemic).
Both of them have yet to reboot (or install updates) at inopportune times.

Out of curiosity, did you write similar rants when (say) Windows 2000 Pro ("Pro" for professional) installed a pinball game by default?
Minesweeper and Solitaire have been the hallmark of professional-use systems for literally decades!
I can remember a time when I didn't make fun of MS for that: before I first saw Windows 3.0.

-
@anotherusername So how many is that? (I'm around 500 or 600)
-
@Erufael And? The same "exploit" would also work for Android apps (though, to make it equivalent you also have to enable sideloading on Android ).
It's the same mechanism as emails with malware attached which you then have to manually execute.
-
@Atazhaia Which is ironic, because if there's anything where a JS implementation is useful over a native app, then it's e.g. Firefox's PDF.js.
Oh bullshit. Every time I print a PDF that's in landscape, FF prints it in portrait. Unlike Acrobat. And fill-in PDFs - FF is a fucking joke. PDF.js a total piece of crap.
-
@dcon Maybe it's flipping twice? Try printing in portrait instead of landscape?
-
@dcon Maybe it's flipping twice? Try printing in portrait instead of landscape?
I shouldn't need to do anything. In Acrobat it prints properly. FF prints in portrait. So FF is broken.
-
@topspin Or! Firefox could fucking work correctly without workarounds.
