NEW SKYPE SUCKS BIG GREEN DONKEY DICKS, hows that for a longer title????

@Onyx Oh yeah when Skype used to be the ultimate cockblocker for anyone trying to use it for certain intimate purposes.
-
@stillwater I'll take your word there, but all I wanted to do is have a call with more than 2 participants. Never worked back in the day, there was always one person no one could hear, chosen at random on call start, or so it seemed.
I know that works now, apparently, but the fact that the basic feature like that didn't work when I tried it made me not trust it, ever.
Also, it was pretty much either impossible or an utter pain to run on anything but Windows, which is a huge no-no for me since I switch OSs a lot. So if it doesn't work on all major platforms, I have a problem with it. AIUI the web version now works on all browser, right? Or is it still "IE plugin only" as it was for a time?

What's back in the day? It never worked properly for several years. Everytime a call with three people was gonna happen, you could hear audible sighs. It was super painful to communicate anything meaningfully. Also what alternatives do people use these days if switching OS is a concern?

I dunno... some time in early 2000s? I still had dial-up when I first installed the damned thing, so it was a while ago. It didn't work with 3 participants then either, but I blamed dial-up speeds at the time. I got ADSL pretty early in its availability here, which Wikipedia claims is available from 2000, so... 2001-2002ish?

The latest UI seems a bit better. At least the Contact List is back although it's complete rubbish. I never understood that decision, for a while it was just gone and the only way I could call someone was to hope I'd called them in the past and find them in my call history.
What really grinds my gears at the moment is when I launch Skype, it asks for UAC elevation so it can update itself. It downloads some stuff, runs a little installer, does some things, makes me wait, launches Skype, and then immediately gives me a dialog saying I need to close Skype so it can update. Okay, so if you weren't updating, what were you doing when you wasted all my time by acting like you were updating?

Ctrl-shift-plus?
That works. I don't actually need it, but thanks. It's good to know.
Meanwhile Ctrl+Shit+Minus doesn't work.
A web search for "skype keyboard shortcuts" has revealed that pressing eg Alt+V will bring up the otherwise hidden window menu.
Typo left on purpose.

Unless you have a numeric keypad and are using the math symbol keys from that.

It has to restart so you can use whatever it downloaded. That at least makes sense. Just be glad it doesn't make you reboot.

But yeah, ICQ was the best one around at the time, IMHO. Too bad everyone insisted on MSN though, which was flaky as all hell as soon as you didn't have a perfect connection.

Giant ass emoticons, when on a message by themselves. Seriously, just look at the size of those things. Also they are flatter now, because of course they are.
FWIW, that's not new; it's been that way for years. Last I knew there was an option for that in the settings.

A few weeks ago, Skype updated itself on my by now 6 years old Macbook Air. It went from Skype 7 ("Skype Classic") to the brand spanking new Skype 8, which is built on Electron.
Fuuuuucccckkk it was godawful. Its performance was absolutely abysmal, to the point where it was unusable. Thankfully I could upgrade it back to Skype 7, but this option is being axed next month.
I know that a Spring 2012 MacBook Air is not exactly "modern" in terms of performance, but this was ridiculous.

I must have some kind of Skype lucky star or something, but it's the only communication app which works decently for me. I don't experience all of the problems other have with it: audio works fine, video works fine, screen sharing works fine, conversations with more than two persons work fine, connections issues happen from time to time but relatively infrequently. Sure, the latest redesign is stupid, but at least the basic features work. Maybe I've been selected for beta-testing a non-broken version?
Other communication apps... my clients have a tendency to want to use the latest trendy one. Every single time, I tell them "don't even bother, we'll waste 15 minutes trying to make it work, it won't, and we'll fall back on Skype.". Every single time, they have to try it anyways. Ugh.

A stupid smiley button after each message. Apparently the Emoticon picker on the left side and the Moji picker on the right side of the message input weren't enough. No, we need to be able to react to each message individually.
Okay, I can understand the reasoning behind this popup, as it permits seeing different reactions from different people in a group conversation:
What are the available reactions?
Well, you can't smile. You can't like. You can't raise an eyebrow. You can't be angry. You can't be thinking. You can't be speechless. You can't eyeroll.
But you can "dancing gran" and "monkey".
-
@Zecc Oh good, covers just about every reaction I have to the behavior of people in a group.

The only communications programs that have ever worked for me (other than programs that are basically chatrooms, of course) have been Skype and the horribly expensive Cisco one (whose name I've forgotten). Both require adequate bandwidth, fairly low latency, low packet drop rates, and little jitter. I've got those at home and at work, so I'm good when I'm there. Elsewhere…

with every second of the call the number of words they could fit in before they got cut off decreased. At the start a short sentence would get through. Two minutes later, they couldn't get two words in.
You should let them speak instead of being so rude. Don't blame your lack of social skills on Skype

This. Because it's not got any traction among the people I wish to chat with, and didn't exist meaningfully back when which service to use was being settled.

The floating popup of an ongoing conversation is like twice taller of what it was before. I guess everyone got a screen upgrade to retina resolution...
The size of the (non-resizable) floating popup for an active call seems to have been specifically chosen so that it is sufficiently large to get even more in your way that it already did before on voice calls, but not as large as you'd like when the person on the other side is sharing their screen.

Why do you think the name starts with ?
More truth-in-advertising: Wikipedia defines the word "discord" like this:
- Lack of concord, agreement or harmony.
- Tension or strife resulting from a lack of agreement.
- (music) An inharmonious combination of simultaneously sounded tones; a dissonance.
- Any harsh noise, or confused mingling of sounds.

I think the biggest problem I ever had with TS was having to write my own runner script in perl because you can't daemonise properly from busybox and I think the TS server didn't daemonise at all.

Linux, Windows 10, "native" app, in browser. All combos. Happens in any of the combinations, at random.
The other day, it completely refused to work in Firefox under Linux, even though it was showing me the green circle on my end no one could hear me. Worked in Chrome on the same OS.

@Onyx Linux is pretty bad with device connectivity in general. When I've used it I've needed to stop and start applications whenever I connect a new audio device in order to get them to recognize it. As if I was using Windows XP or something. But on Windows I have experienced absolutely zero device issues ever.

It's not the device. It detects it. It shows it in the UI. The green bar indicator for the mic in the settings moves. My avatar lights up when I talk. People still can't hear me.
I assume it fucks up setting up the RTC at some point, and nothing but restarting the clients seems to help.
