@blakeyrat I didn't read the entire subthread so I don't quite know what's the issue.
The issue is that Android sucks, but Pie Flavor hates hearing that because Android is his waifu or... something.
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
Is it that a launcher icon doesn't have unread count?
That's a small reason why Android sucks. There are several dozen more.
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
Well, it's a technical limitation of Android that launcher icons are immutable
Wow, it's almost as if... that sucks!
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
But wouldn't desktop widgets work for you?
If you know one that does, fucking tell me about it.
BTW why is it that Android users need to know the difference between "launcher icons" and "widgets"? So intuitive! So usable!
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:
I'm sure there's plenty of desktop widget apps that show you unread count.
If you're so fucking sure, tell me the name of one.
"I'm sure you can do this, Android's great, there has to be 20 apps, I'm sure this is easy to do, it's so easy to figure this out everything's easy in Android!"
"Ok, name an app that does it."
"(silence forever)"

Do you have to insult random people in every post to survive, or what? He's not even in this topic anymore (at least at the moment).

There are several dozen reasons why Android sucks, but lack of "live" icons ain't one.

Wow, it's almost as if... that sucks!
It only sucks if it's a problem. The technical limitation of exFAT is that it can't have partitions larger than 128 petabytes, but it doesn't make it suck. It will suck when not having partitions larger than 128 petabytes becomes a problem.
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

I like you, so I will spend an evening installing every mail app I can find on my phone, just to find one that has a 1x1 widget with unread count. Shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.
BTW why is it that Android users need to know the difference between "launcher icons" and "widgets"? So intuitive! So usable!
Why is it that Windows users need to know the difference between a folder and a printer? So intuitive! So usable!

"Ok, name an app that does it."
"(silence forever)"The only reason I can't name one is because I've never had a need for it. The default GMail app has a widget for reading all your emails right there on home screen - surely there's an app that does less.

Good luck. I spent hours on it.
Requirements:
- Number must be the number of UNREAD MESSAGES in the Inbox of the email account
- Each email account must have its own icon/widget/whatever, with its own unread count
- Tapping the icon/widget/whatever should open up that email account in an email client that doesn't suck ass
- (bonus) Figure out a way to get Android to stop "notifying" me of new emails. Getting an email is not worthy of a notification; I get several every hour, and 95% of them are things that don't require urgent attention
Simple, right? Windows Phone and iOS both do this by default when you turn them on. So it should be no problem to get Android to do the same.

Again: good luck.

Oh. This changes entire game. I wonder if it ever worked for you on Windows, and if it did, how did you manage to do that - AFAIK you can only have one tile per app.
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Given how angry you've got at me for even suggesting that Android might not be as horrible as you think, I don't think there's anything that could ever meet your unspecified standard of "not sucking ass", even if somehow I've somehow got full desktop version of Office Outlook Pro running on your phone.
Still, I'm gonna try to prove you wrong.

That can be done independently of any apps, I believe. I know that I've accidentally done this exact thing when trying to do the opposite.

Google Maps has a way to store a destination and put a shortcut icon on my home screen that automatically enters that destination and gets driving directions.
I think browsers have some way of adding a home screen shortcut to a website, too, but I don't use that.
-
@anotherusername When did that happen. I guess it is now.
Well whatever.
-
Who the fuck moves posts 4 days after the topic died down?
-
@gąska I figured that mod request went ignored, like most of mine. I guess instead it got... half done?
Honestly though other than the cut-off email account names, the app you found does work now. I definitely tried it and it didn't work before, though, I checked the Play Store history thing.
The cut-off email account names is the exact kind of sloppy "how the fuck do you not notice this!?" bug every Android app seems to be full of.

It's also the exact kind of bug that only appears for 1% of all users, and developers cannot fix it because they're not the 1% (otherwise they'd notice before release). It's similar to the PC problem - there are so many possible configurations that it's impossible to test each and every setup with each and every application. And unlike Microsoft in 1990s, Google doesn't care enough to mass-test 3rd party code with 3rd party hardware to make sure there are no compatibility issues there.
-
Also - @Weng, you made a typo in topic title.
-
@blakeyrat also - you use an app that cuts off letters? Wow. Your tolerance for shitty software is higher than mine.

@dkf Oh that's just inflammatory. All smart people know that GIF is pronounced with a hard 'g'!

@pie_flavor 256 colours should be enough for anyone.

There are only 6 colors.
Even the extended bright/dark palette is nowhere close 256.
-
@mrl Black, blue, green, cyan, red, purple, brown, and light gray.

cyan purple
Trying to trick me with made up words, heheh, nice try.

@mrl You prefer turquoise and magenta?

I sometimes say 'turquoise' to make an impression on ladies. Dunno what that is though.
And what does a musical have to do with colors?
-
Turquoise and burgundy are the colors of my bathroom. (Yes, it was high fashion at some point. Allegedly.)
-
@atazhaia Better than avocado and harvest gold. Maybe.
-
@hardwaregeek Uh oh, now I have to link the avocado bathroom skit:

IT'S AVOCADO YOU CUNT!
Everyone knows that children's bodies look better in a white bath and before you say that sounds weird I mean alive or dead!

Certainly looks like something French would eat.

@mrl 0 m/s local velocity is the average speed of a turquoise.
-
@blakeyrat said in Gaska tries to fix Blakeyrat's phone.:
Windows Phone and iOS both do this by default when you turn them on.
Well, thumbs down on Windows 10, which, having recently had a (very small) reason to use the Mail App, decided to check if this works as advertised.
Here's the Mail App on my Start Menu:
(No, I couldn't figure out how to tell it what "Inbox" to display, it just does that). Look, 1 unread, right?
Well, fuck no, there was actually
69 unread messages in my Inbox.Good jorb, works out of the box.
-
@anotherusername said in Gaska tries to fix Blakeyrat's phone.:

Chrome does this. It's how I'm avoiding the mobile vertical confusion issue at the moment.
-
@Tsaukpaetra As far as I can tell, and I'm not saying I agree with it, the live tile only appears to show the number of "new" unread messages.
Besides that one item, which doesn't bug me personally, the Mail app in Windows 10 works well for me. About as well as the native mail apps on iOS and Android do for the same accounts, as each have their own little quirks.
-
@ChaosTheEternal said in Gaska tries to fix Blakeyrat's phone.:

This. Which, if I'm not mistaken, is functionally equivalent to the notification-counting behaviour so hated upthread.
Except it's marginally worse, because even though I can create a shortcut/live tile thing for the various folders/accounts, these tiles also don't show unread count.
So, Windows 10 is basically on par with Android at this point. Big surprise...

@Jaloopa The first one, because you came up with the second one when you wrote it and nobody else pronounces it that way.
