Yes. It's cheap and reliable (at the hardware level, that is). And save for idiotic shenanigans like these, usually also reasonably accurate.

All of that applies to a quartz clock as well and we don't have to worry about a 3rd party interfering with it.

But a quartz clock has a tendency for either negative or positive drift. Constant drift, that is. Tying the clock to mains frequency usually evens itself out on average.
This is the first time in decades this has actually been a problem.
Also: The drift in quartz crystals gets worse as the device ages. That's not the case when you tie it to mains. Not an unimportant point in kitchen appliances where lifespans are measured in years.
-
-
@dragoon Yes. Because they'll include frickin' expensive quartz crystals into the 5€ alarm clock :)
Also, please note that for example, an oven already has to sync to the mains frequency (because you don't want to induce large currents at inopportune moments). And when you already have the circuitry for that it's really cheaper to use it as a clock anyway. Introducing a quartz crystal would only complicate things and yield another point of failure.
Listen, dude, you can keep on arguing and arguing. But the point is: If it were that cheap to include a quartz crystal then they'd include a crystal.
Also, again: First time in decades that this is a problem.

@zecc A lot of the employees at my local McDonalds are Polish women in their mid 30s - early 40s and Teenagers in College (that is typically 16-19 here).

Classical representational art has actually made a comeback over the last 20 years, it's just not shown in museums and galleries. It's mostly sold directly to private collectors.

So... how much is a typical (human) burger-flipper in California paid, anyway? And what is the expected lifespan of these robots?
Each robot is priced at $60,000 and costs a further $12,000 a year to run.
No doubt the price will go down as the tech improves, but this seems like it would be on the dubious side of practicality at the moment, especially since I'm sure the maintenance costs will wind up being larger than expected (don't they always?).
Ah, later on we get an explanation. It's not principally about saving money (or at least, so they claim):
Cali said that it started to use the robot to get around the problems it has recruiting staff. The high turnover rate among staff in fast-food restaurants meant it often spent time and money training people to prepare food only to have them leave after a few months.
Presumably people would stick around for longer if they were paid more, so it still looks like a money-saving operation at the core, but not necessarily on a straight wage comparison.

So "Flippy" couldn't keep up. Apparently we need a new paradigm for "a job any machine can handle", flipping burgers requires more skill than we thought.

I've just realised - why do we need robots to flip burgers? When I worked at McD's, even over 20 years ago, we had clamshell grills that cooked both sides of the burger at the same time:
-
@pjh As far as I can tell? Mostly just because a robot that actually flips burgers is a bigger slap-in-the-face to the career burger flippers who think that it should pay a living wage.

What if the electric source it's synced to is a nuclear power plant that's outside its operational lifetime?

Y'know, the Garage is over there. It's funny that you all make a big deal out of @fox but you guys aren't really any better.
Fuck you.

@rhywden First off, I can't see anything in there that would cause a site-wide flamewar. I assume you see something that makes you boil with rage and want to take part in a flamewar?
Second, have you looked in a mirror? Of everyone here, you seem to get the most worked-up by hearing disagreements.
Most people here really seem to enjoy arguing in a somewhat insulting sort of way, while still managing to be good-natured about it. Some mild trolling is kind of expected. If you'd just post a :P emoji and move on, so would they.

Listen, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You're not the navel of the world.
Plus, it's not a "disagreement". It's dredging up stuff from the garage. Funnily enough, no one lambasts him for doing that.
Thirdly: YOU don't get to decide what's "mild trolling". I don't remember that anyone voted for you having that right.
We have the Garage for a reason. Go there if you want to troll people, because that's precisely what you're currently doing: Supporting a troll.
-
@rhywden Probably because no one remembers it. But have fun getting bent out of shape. You are skilled at it.

Obviously someone remembers. I mean, those upvotes don't come out of nowhere. Have fun with your horseblinders while being hypocritical.
I can also see why several members have left this place.
-
@rhywden Anyone who sees something poking fun at you is likely to upvote it, because they are entertained. You never fail to make a scene. And that's what I'm trying to warn you against. You are creating this problem yourself. If you always take everything completely seriously, this will only get worse.

I'm just going to step in and say this:
Blame is not a conserved quantity. In any given situation, multiple people can be 100% at fault simultaneously. Both the one trolling outside of the Garage and the one taking the bait are at fault, both for different things. "He started it" is rarely a morally-ok excuse in matters other than self-defense.
If one recklessly or maliciously starts a small fire and another feeds it until it burns down the house, which is the arsonist? Both, in my opinion.
-
So I was checking if the postal jokers were up to something new. They reposted this:
-
@benjamin-hall Have you ever considered that for some of us the internet is an outlet?
I used to give a fuck about what people cared about me because I was trying to keep my online persona and my IRL persona the same.
I couldn't square the two, so I made a IRL / best mates persona and a mask I have at work. The mask doesn't come off until 5.30
-
@lucas1 Doesn't matter.
- If you attempt to offend someone, you're acting morally wrongly (IMO). If nothing else, bringing Garage material outside of that area is a violation of forum rules.
- If you get offended, that was a choice you made. Feeding a troll is contributing to the problem; reacting to leaked Garage material causes more leakage. That's also a moral wrong independently of the prior offense.
Thus, both leaker and responder are at fault. Doesn't matter if you have a persona--I have lots of them. Violating rules is wrong. The appropriate response it to flag and move on. Or just ignore it entirely.

Fair points. I apologise for baiting, I just found it vaguely amusing to compare the not-really similar situations. It wasn't intended to annoy @Rhywden
I kept out of that particular Garage conversation because I don't know enough to argue either side

The researchers gave AMD less than 24 hours to look at the vulnerabilities and respond before publishing the report. Standard vulnerability disclosure calls for 90 days' notice so that companies have time to address flaws properly.
