Teh Offishal Wondows 10 Full Craters' Pupdate Thred

-
They really couldn't come up with a new name?
-
@boomzilla
The naming guy was on strike in solidarity with the WGA.
-
I'll call you back when the current one decides to finally install on my machine properly... Might be before fall, with any luck...
-
@izzion Update McUpdateface is not amused.
-
@Onyx
Obviously, the solution is to buy a new computer that doesn't have Linux hardware
-
What does "Creators Update" even mean? Are they going to massively update 3D Paint?
-
@hungrier Yes, that is exactly what it meant. 3D Paint was supposedly the focus of this update. This is not a joke.

Now with sound!
As a nod to creativity, the Fall Creators Update will contain a new creative app that will let you build stories from your photos and videos, combining them with a soundtrack and transitions.
-
This fall will see the return of Bill Gates in Creators Update 2: The Creationing. Watch in terror as Windows Update finds new ways to inconvenience millions at inconvenient times! See Richard Stallman flail and sputter furiously and fruitlessly as he tries to bring about the Year of Linux on the Desktop once again! Watch in awe as the spirit of Steve Jobs is summoned to this world to herald the coming of macOS 10.13, now with twice the amount of features lifted from others and presented as new!

It's literally Windows Movie Maker: UWP edition.
-
@boomzilla Oh man, I can't wait to add sounds to my 3D Paint masterpiece, "Swear Words With Random 3D Junk Overlaid"

, it is called the Creators' Update.
-
Heralding the upcoming Pupdate is every Insider's favorite request from Microsoft, "Please Please Please Please Test Our Software For Us Because We Fired Everyone Who Knows How". (AKA a Bug Bash.)
I feel this one focuses too much on Edge and not enough on nailing new icons to the Taskbar that don't do anything useful. I did learn, however, that the Windows Store gives you very bad suggestions for things to purchase and that it has collections of wallpapers that you could have downloaded from anywhere that is apparently an important enough feature to have folks test it. Good thing I already turned off syncing my settings out of the virtual machine.
-
The update also improved Edge noticeably, and added Windows Mixed Reality Hub or whatever, along with some other VR-related things, which you can already simulate if you care. I'm sure there was more, but that was the interesting thing.

As in... Windows Movie Maker?
Why is this being called new again?
Edit: Maybe I should just ask for a red-boob on Mobile so I can buffer my thoughts...

Oh yeah, what they're calling "themes"? Yeah, what a load of baloney.
Back in my day, Themes included sounds, icons, background pictures, mouse cursors, and sometimes even window chrome resource adjustments!

Windows Mixed Reality Hub or whatever,
What, this thing?
I haven't gotten it to do anything so far...
-
@Tsaukpaetra It's supposed to look like this:

Ah. Got that after a Cumulative Update got applied.
It tried and failed to download stuff or something. Oh well.
I have a Hololens, why should I mess with an emulator? :D
-
@Tsaukpaetra It's more that you're one of the only people who can compare the two.

It broke it for WTDWTF, which was the final push for me to switch default browser
-
@Jaloopa
Microsoft's telemetry showed it how much of your life you werehopelessly wastingbeing bamboozled into spending here, so they thought they'd help you out and use Edge to nudge you into more productive uses of your time.
-
@Jaloopa I'm more interested in why edge doesn't like this site now. Did they adhere more strictly to something? Was there some kind of security change? Was it just a bug? That would be seriously nice to know.
-
@Magus I just did some browsing on Edge, but didn't get the error.
One thing I will say though: MS's claim that Edge is faster than Chrome? Utter bullcrap.
-
@RaceProUK The only problem here is clicking notifications afaik.
As for the speed thing, it depends on a lot of things, but apparently it did win at some specific benchmark once.
-
@Magus said in Teh Offishal Wondows 10 Full Craters' Pupdate Thred:

Winning a benchmark is like proving something with statistics. With enough hunting for the right conditions you can get whatever result you want
-
@Jaloopa Yes?

Yet another Edge case. The browser appears to be full of them.
-
@masonwheeler It's my main browser at home, and apart from this place, it's only seemed to get less buggy as it's gone on, and there were never many bugs.
Though every time I launch it, it asks if I want to close all my tabs, with no way to tell it to stop asking.
-
@Magus said in Teh Offishal Wondows 10 Full Craters' Pupdate Thred:

Only because there's no features to have bugs
-
@RaceProUK Most of the features it does have are things I don't really have any interest in using. Sure, I can save sets of tabs, like opera and sleipnir. I can draw on the screen with a pen I don't have. There's also some kind of expanded tab view that probably has features.
The Cortana-things I know it can do are things that I haven't used, because Cortana is easier to ask than Edge.
At least it has AdBlock?
Anyway, this site has weird stuff going on.
Sleipnir also freaks out when I click notifications, to the point where NodeBB says there was an internal server error, and for the next 5 minutes, refreshing says SSL is broken. Now, that could just be the office I'm in, but that isn't something it used to do, and it started around the time Edge started having trouble here.

WUT??

See, even Edge is trying to make you stop using it
-
@TimeBandit If I installed Chr-Ome I'd have to launch it a lot more often, because I'd have to kill it to protect my CPU and ram every 5 minutes.

earlier this afternoon, builds from some of our internal branches were accidentally released for PC and Mobile. This happened because an inadvertent deployment to the engineering system that controls which builds/which rings to push out to insiders
Microsoft did an oopsie!

"For desktop users, the problem is merely an annoyance; the build, taken from a development branch named
"RS_EDGE_CASE"RS_OOPSIE, appears to work, broadly speaking""The mobile situation is a little more grave. Again, a build was released from a different development branchโthis one named
"RS_IoT,"RS_LOLZ denoting that it's not even a mobile build at all"

Honest to $DEITY real email I received this evening:
Is it?
-
Speaking of Windows Insider emails, I can't figure out how to change my Windows Insider email address. The address they are sending mail to isn't even associated with my Microsoft account anymore. There seems to be no option anywhere other than to leave the program and then try joining it again, which I CBA to do.
-
I only have my dedicated junk laptop on the insider program currently. Apparently that's a good thing.
Which branch did all this stuff get sent out to, Insider Fast?

Users will also be able to select fullscreen mode in Edge using F11.
Edge finally catches up to IE6!
-
@RaceProUK You know, we talk a big game about being agile and releasing the minimum viable product and then only adding what people really need, to prevent bloat.... and then when Microsoft does it, we ridicule them for it.
-
@Yamikuronue said in Teh Offishal Wondows 10 Full Craters' Pupdate Thred:

True but we also ridicule other companies for it
On a related note: without telling me I was ushered in the first release group for the Crate Flopdate but I was only stuff that broke where internal apps and we knew that already. Just long lunch break and a scheduled reboot.
-
@Yamikuronue Given Edge is meant to be the replacement for IE, I'd say the 'minimum viable product' should be at feature-parity.
-
@RaceProUK Really? What about the "feature" that rejects XML it doesn't think is well-formed without any clear error message? Or the tight integration with Windows that makes security vulnerabilities in IE so dangerous?
MVP for a web browser is browsing the web. Maybe bookmarks.

Minimum viable product means something much different for a Leviathan like Microsoft than it does for a comparatively tiny software company.
-
@Yamikuronue I said 'feature-parity', not 'identical'
