FlightAware starts using :disco: :horse: Sadness ensues

Notable Quotables:
Iโve seen other forums move this bloody awful software and just die a horrible death. Iโve tried to like it but itโs dreadful. This isnโt a knee jerk reaction to change, I genuinely have tried but I really donโt see the point.
Just had a quick look at the new forum and there are a few problems.
here is my suggestion to improve: go back to the old software. this layout here uses just 50% of the screen for the content, the user icons are nearly not differentiable and small etc. etc.
this forum isnโt usable. I donโt think Iโll be posting further unless I absolutely must. Itโs simply too hard to do anything. Hopefully I can look up old threads on the wayback machine.
Personally I much prefer the old forum and would love to know WHY the change to this mess!?
-
Oh man I'm on another forum where the FlightAware guy hangs out. Or used to, anyway. I think it's just his girlfriend/wife that's around now, and sporadically at that. I'll have to file this away for future knowledge.
-
@weng I am very tempted to write a heartfelt warning to them. I'm more of an occasional lurker than a contributor to that forum, but I've noticed its activity has gone down in the last few years. This will no doubt kill it for good.
-
@the_quiet_one I did that for the Eve Online forums back when Discourse was first brought up as a potential replacement. I even mentioned this place by name if they wanted to come find the history of fuckup.
They still went with Discourse.

I remember that! Didn't you also link to the discopocalypse thread too?
-
@tsaukpaetra Pretty sure I did.
-
@e4tmyl33t Eve actually ignored its players' feedback in what their next steps should be? Color me shocked!
-
Why does Flight Aware have a forum? What is there to discuss? I have used their site for several years and never even considered that they might have a forum.

Topics on general aviation, airline news, interesting flight paths (e.g. why did this plane going from Boston to Miami use Denver as a waypoint?)
I would have just told you to check the forums to answer your own question, but then I remembered... it's discohorse now, so that's impossible to do.

I recall that they usually went with "fuck up first, then spend at least a year unfucking things after the playerbase went rabid".

@the_quiet_one makes sense. I just never even thought of them as having a forum. As I have a fair number of friends and clients now who either fly or have private planes I only use it as a resource to send my wife to so that she worries less when I fly. I have never used it for anything other than tracking tail numbers and never considered it as a news or discussion site.
-
Seen in the comment:
things like this happen when flying high without oxygen onboard
Best explanation for

@the_quiet_one The EVE-O Forums are using Discourse now as well. Not that anyone uses the EVE-O forum.

I see people shit on Discourse all the time here, but I've never understood why. I use it all the time and never had any problems with it.
-
@pie_flavor I'm not going to do it, but I'd expect some downvotes for that one.
I suggest you read the Discopocalypse thread for a full story of why Discourse was Worse Than Failure.

I couldn't. So innocent, so untainted... it would be a shame.
-
Going through that topic I noticed that @abcd567 complained about the layout on mobile and wasn't banned. What kind of sloppy Discourse instance is that?
Filed Under: He is still longer welcome there

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys... or should I say the lack of a vote of non-confidence?
Wonder if we should pop in and ask why they picked one over the other...

will any of these friends let you use the plane to fly to DC without checking the cargo hold for explosives?
asking for a few hundred million friends i have in America.

Why does Flight Aware have a forum? What is there to discuss? I have used their site for several years and never even considered that they might have a forum.
They do a kit that allows you to upload the flight information being transmitted by the planes themselves, and doing that grants you some sort of elevated access to the flight information. The forum provides help with things like getting the kit working I guess, as well as a place for people dead keen on aviation stats. (I guess some people like doing that sort of thing.)
For me, FlightAware is just a useful spot for tracking where the incoming flight is that will form the outgoing flight I'm expecting to take. It's really quite comforting to know that sort of thing when scheduled to fly out of an airport with significant weather delaysโฆ
-
@pie_flavor you must use it on very low traffic sites, with short threads and never do anything exotic like use it on mobile.

I use it on mobile all the time, there are many multi-hundred post threads and some in the thousands, and I would say posts are about 1/3 as frequent as WTDWTF.
-
@pie_flavor and considering that we were busier when we were on Discourse than we are now, it's an even smaller fraction.
I suppose they must have fixed some problems, because even 1k posts in a thread used to fuck Discourse up pretty good. I suppose you haven't had His Holy Jeffness around telling you all how you're doing it wrong.

Interesting. I assumed all the information came from the FAA?

Yes, IIRC long threads were until a paying customer complained.

Server specs are pretty important, too. The forums that @pie_flavor uses might just have beefy enough servers, which means pretty beefy in the case of discourse.

Like 25% of all of Azure's CPU and RAM
-
@deadfast even then they're still but at least the software can cope with it. But IIRC it took about 2 years to actually get to that point.
-
-
@polygeekery said in FlightAware starts using Sadness ensues:

I believe they also get that, but it's patchy as that's at best only the original flight plans and not the actual positions as ATC can use the information coming from the planes' transponders. However, that information is totally unencrypted so with the the right radio gear (and what I think is a modified Rฯ) you can have yourself a cheap little receiver. Combine the information streaming from lots of those receivers and you've got a good idea where the planes are, and in quite a few markets too; the FAA give the flightplans out fairly easily, but many other countries are a lot slower.
Their data integration system is technologically interesting. (I wrote some of the libraries they use. Not that it gives me anything other than bragging rights, but they're better than nothing.) But it seems that that sort of thing would be much more their core business than their forum softwareโฆ

I've considered abusing my powers to make it so, but @tufty's avatar has been somewhat of a brake on it.
Thus far.
BTW, that was created 3 yrs ago with that purpose in mind...

@the_quiet_one that and it changed the mood away to be slightly less toxic than CS was.

When it wasn't overtaxing the server it was a lot easier to compose, preview and post than CS was. Which was a pretty low bar, to be sure.

It was nice to be able to write a post without having to write raw HTML.
Because CS totally thought that Chrome couldn't possibly be a browser that could handle Javascriptโฆ

I'm fairly certain they're not beefy at all. The specific site can be found here

Yeah, not very busy:
Though I know that they have done a lot of performance improvements since they booted us. There's a locked 2K post thread and 1.6K post thread and maybe a couple of others that top 1K.
This is our current activity (I'm sure I posted some similar screenshots in the disco-era). Being the weekend, the last 24 hours are kinda slow.
