That's racist!
This is about the third or fourth thread with J&M's back-and-forth adhominems and there are quite a few other threads they do that as well, so locking won't help. That's why I personally appealed to J&M to stop it. So it really is only half a vote.

How about 4?
We have 2 already, and JvdL's may count as half a vote.
Lock! And actually, my vote counts for twelve (sixteen on a good day, if the wind's blowing just right), so I'll just go ahead and lock it.
And for the record, I find this whole thread to be a bit embarssing. One my spare spare time, I run another site that has a community with a median age of like sixteen, and they manage to act more mature.
@morbiuswilters: Based on your rather callous tone this thread (i.e., my first impression of you), I was going to just press the big old "Ban and Reset" button. However, I went back and read posts on "non-meta" threads, and they weren't bad. Heated, yes, but not harsh. I mention this here simply to give my opinion to all as a mostly outside observer.@everyone: I will try to jump back in the forums a bit more regularly, but in the mean time, just so you're all aware, the one thing I really can't stand (hence banning MPS) is hostility towards newbies. I was "scarred for life" by a group of self-righteous UNIX guys back when I was back in school, trying to self-learn UNIX. Every time I'd ask a question ("why is this pipeline chain not working") on the board (it was like, unix.help or something), they'd flame away with "go back to DOS", "RTFM, idiot", etc. To this day, I'm biased against anything *nix as a result... and I'd hate to see (moreover, condone) the same for another newb.

when debating with someone who is
completely irrational, who repeatedly insults you and makes no effort to
discuss reality, pay attention to what they say. Each insult, each
accusation, each thing they complain about is a perfect reflection of themselves.
That is, an irrational person will continually call you a "liar" when
they are lying themselves; they will accuse you of name calling and
being immature just as they are calling you names. And so on.Seems like a convoluted verson of a typical childish answer to an insult:
a - you're an idiot!
b - no, you are

@jaloopa Ah, xkcd and its recurrent "anyone who cares about spelling or grammar is an asshole" theme.
Yet I bet that if I confused years and light years in front of Randall he would throw a fit.

None of the people from back then are still around :(
I used to frequent a different forum during early 2000-s. Then one day just grew tired of it and disappeared.
Every few years I pop back and anonymously browse some of my old posts, to see what kind of person I was 10 years ago. But I would never consider logging in. That part of me is now gone.
I wonder if some of those people do the same with this forum.

Well, technically...
I was around during the later bits of the CS era, I just didn't post much. Spent a lot of time lurking around the Sidebar, since some of the stuff from there at the time was on-par or better than frontpage articles (hence why some of them eventually became frontpage articles. Hello, snoofle, wherever you are!).
I will definitely admit the forum community is largely vastly different than it used to be.

This is just a childish description of projection. Something that @morbiuswilters actually correctly identified.

I do this with another forum, but that forum is actually like dead dead. Admins' hostility at some point made all newbies go away. Also, it was a Mandriva-related forum and Mandriva is long dead and hey refused to rebrand.
They still pay for hosting it, but there's like 10 posts a year there. I sometimes go there to see what a prick I was when I was in my teens, only to find out I'm still a prick, just a different kind of one.

Now that's just masochism. I often groan at posts that are a week or two old, seeing my posts from 10 years ago again would probably end up with me inventing a time machine to whack my 2007 self in the head.

I was a lurker then, since about a year or two before the switch to Dicksauce. From what I remember, the discussions in Side Bar WTF back then was like now, except more extreme. Also, it took me quite some time to figure out what Spanish Inquisition was doing there.
-
@gąska Eh, it depended a bit on who got involved and/or the quality of the thing posted in the Sidebar at the time.
I do miss Signature Guy sometimes. Or at least whomever had the variant with the Q avatar, if that wasn't the original.

I prefer my forums to not have big ol discussions about people being banned. Banning creates unnecessary drama.
-
I remember l
oourking around here a bit back when the forum was on Community Server, but I can't recall if I made an account then or not. I think my current account was created after the move onto NodeBB, though; I don't remember any of the kerfuffle that led to moving off of Discourse.
-
@djls45 That's about the same for me. Started to lurk in CS times, witnessed the move to Discourse and the ensuing chaos, and only joined on NodeBB (not that the move caused me to join, but it so happened).
It seems that all communities (whether online or not, actually!) go through a renewal every few years. I haven't seen any group that keeps the same participants or spirit more than 5 years or so. We don't usually notice it in real life because there is no archive and no one to fbmac it back to life!

Yeah, not to mention that you need a really big can to fit them in.

I did find an account that I made in mid-2013. @ben_lubar, what's the likelihood of getting that account (the posts, at least) merged into this one?
