@Benjamin-Hall not only is it not showing up, your username also isn't lined up with everyone else's...
edit: it looks fine in Chrome. Firefox persists in showing the empty space, even after Ctrl+F5.

Probably karmic retribution on you for breaking the forums this week -- WOMM
-
@anotherusername Ah. I'm using chrome (and have no desire to use firefox). That's why it looked normal.
-
@Benjamin-Hall ... oh ... nevermind, the image is hotlinked from Facebook, and I had
facebook.com
adblocked globally for third-party sites, to kill the stupid social integration features. I excepted images from the rule and it's showing fine...
-
@Benjamin-Hall Figured out the speaker issue. Seems my sound card driver decided to reset to defaults after I updated to W10 Creators Pupdate. That being completely wrong (ie wrong channels, thinking I had a center and rear instead of two front and a sub). At least I don't have to buy new ones.

Apparently this version of NodeBB doesn't give mobile users any clue they received a chat message. It's almost OK because chat is unusable on mobile.

Status: Our 5 year old is fascinated by the human body and anatomy. He also loves Easter, and it is probably his favorite holiday. He loves scavenger hunts and eggs (he wants to visit Delaware once he learned they have a huge bird egg museum). So, I found him the perfect Easter bunny for this year.
How fucking cool is that? I wish I had ordered one for myself. It was delivered today and I wanted to open it and play with it.

Ha! Last week he woke up and vomited, so we kept him home from preschool. An hour later he felt fine, which was about the time that I was about to leave. Instead of leaving him with the nanny I took him to work with me as it was going to be a pretty lax day. The only pressing thing on the menu was putting the wall plates on at a cabling job with a client that I know really well and I knew they would have heavy equipment at their new office that I could hop on if I wanted.
So anyway, he goes and fucks off with me all day. We go pick up some parts and drop them off at a job, put on the wall plates, I fired up a bulldozer and shoved some dirt around with him in my lap, we had lunch, and generally just fucked off all day. Good fun. I only wanted to strangle him once.
That night his mother asked him, "Did you have fun working with daddy today?" His reply was priceless, "Yeah!! I want to grow up and be like daddy. He just drives around, talks on the phone, buys stuff and he let me drive a bulldozer."

Is that your normal? The only time I can feel any sort of "caffeine rush" is like the first 2 days when I start after being clean for weeks. After that it's pretty much gone forever, except if I literally take a triple dose at least, and even then there's like a 50% chance I won't feel anything at all.

@Rhywden
Saving lives doesn't hold a candle to getting an order on Friday night to run 80 network drops, due EOD MondayObviously, I realize that saving lives is way more stressful

REALLY irritated with the entire model with which all internet sales appear to be conducted these days.
Want a mortgage rate? Alright give us your name, address, phone number.
44 calls and counting in 2 days.
Want a price on this used car? Alright, give us your name, address, phone number.
3 calls, 2 SMS's and counting in 6 minutes.
-
@Weng make sure you always press the "please don't send me bullshit checkbox". BTW in the UK they have to be Opt-in.
-
No such checkbox. Wanting the numbers is opt-in enough.

So my ISP just called to offer to upgrade my internet speeds to 80, 110, or 200 Megagigs! How exiting!

I still don't understand why it takes 5 minutes for it to check for updates...anyone have any explanations? I'm on my desktop on a wired connection, so network doesn't seem to be the issue, and I'm on a speedy Samsung 950 SSD...

@ChaosTheEternal And because I'm a ________, I decided to go ahead with the Creator's Update on my laptop today. It got past the first reboot (where it's updating at a low level) and at this stage of the updating process, it apparently decided to:
- reactivate the built-in microphone
- output audio from the microphone over the speakers
So, to fix the problem of my laptop screaming computerized bloody murder at me from the microphone-to-speakers-to-microphone feedback loop, I had to plug in a pair of headphones, which thankfully became the default sound playback device and now it's all quiet again.

Status: Just figured out that the reason my laptop won't fucking stay connected to the VPN long enough to get a RDP session is because of fucking Windows Firewall.
As in, on a whim, I turned Windows Firewall off, and now it's working perfectly fine.
edit (4 days later): orrr, maybe not... it worked the one time, but it didn't work yesterday. Something's still screwy.

Status: found a Windows XP laptop. Still kinda works. Tried to shutdown, everything closed and I could only see the background and the mouse. It never made it past that point. See how much Windows has improved over the years?

You know what Gentoo had? A fucking package manager.
Yes, it took hours to install Firefox, but I didn't have to run an EXE compiled on some other computer.

Huh, I thought that everything was compiled from source, including the initial kernel? Must have been a different distro...

You did that using the package manager. During the process, you also compile the package manager and the compilers.

@ben_lubar sounds horribly impractical

FWIW, if you're developing extensions for a compiler (), you want to build your own version.

Instead you compile the code that you're not going to check for potential malicious elements anyway because who the fuck bothers. So secure!

STATUS: Got rEFInd installed on my work laptop so I wont have to keep mashing F9 on boot to get the boot menu. Now to decide if I should bother signing the Linux boot image too so SecureBoot will allow running it directly, or if I should keep going the detour through Grub.

Well, the Firefox source code is 205MB compressed, so it might take a while to read through it.
On a related note, is it possible to interpret C code? So you could start running a .c file instantly, and it could get compiled in the background in the meanwhile, starting with the most used parts.

No.
...oh, you mean for interpreter software?

I definitely don't get it from coffee, sometimes do from energy drinks, but recently I've been getting it quite a bit from strong black tea. (I found the perfect tea strainer and have rediscovered my love of tea.) I don't know if it's the tannins or what, but since I haven't drunk tea in quite some time it's probably analogous to your "clean for weeks". It's definitely not all about the caffeine.

It did not end well.

Dammit. So despite the fact that in all respects I'm an employee (don't schedule my own jobs, don't get free reign on what to do, etc.), for tax purposes I'm a "sole proprietorship". Because my "boss" doesn't deduct Medicare and Social Security. I didn't even realize that was the case until a week ago.
Fuck.

Actually, reading up on the relevant IRS website, it might be that I should be considered an employee.
Which brings me right into "Don't do business with family, because it leads to problems".

It's possible to interpret any language, and easier to do so than to compile it.
