@Mikael_Svahnberg Could be a Bandvagn 206. It has a top speed of 55km/h. And the machine gunner is partially on the vehicle when standing? It's technically not a car, though...
-
@Atazhaia Or Valpen. Since this is the Funny Stuff thread, it is pertinent (even if it is claimed to have a top speed of 100km/h)
This, gentlepeople, was until late 1990's the backbone of Swedish troop transportation:
Name: "The Puppy"
So don't you dare attack us, or you will face the fury of the lucky (?) six who get to ride in the car (?), as well as the 20-odd soldiers on bicycles who hold on to a rope attached to the back of it. Grr!
-
@Mikael_Svahnberg That doesn't look like it'd do a good job of protecting the occupants.
Then again, until Afghanistan and Iraq happened, we used the Snatch Land Rover:
(this variant is the Snatch Vixen)
Needless to say, it was a bit crap, and our soldiers kept getting blowed up. So, we bought a bunch of stuff like this to replace them:
Our troops don't get blowed up as much anymore. And that's a good thing
-
Was, yes. Now we got Plastgrisen (the plastic pig) as Bv 206 is called. And you can nowadays also have all soldiers inside it! (Can take up to 16, but normally have one for each group which is ~8 soldiers to have room for equipment and such too.)
And yeah, I can and am allowed to drive them around, which I do occasionally. I'm not supposed to do it as I am a backup driver, but severe driver shortage has me driving every time I'm on duty in addition to my normal tasks. Which makes it extra fun fleeing from being shot at by artillery fire and having to change roles on the fly, going from maximum equipment to minimum equipment.

/me looks in his father's 1967 copy of SoldF (Soldier's manual), the chapter on combat in city environments
Make hooks out of wire and attach them to your handgrenades before throwing them through a window to prevent them from bouncing back if the enemy has attached a net on the inside. This way, some of the blast will still reach inside.
/me looks at the next page
When you have taken a building, attach nets to the insides of windows to bounce off any handgrenades the enemy might throw at you.
Nevermind the last bit; that is just an illustration that they didn't expect the enemy to have a copy of their own book. There are plenty of such amusing lapses in it. The first bit, though. If you have a car that looks like a hedgehog on steroids (no wonder you like it!), then it is relatively easy to make the handgrenades stick to the sides.
...harder to reach with an RPG, though...

:-) The second one (I wasn't looking too closely, TBH)

@Mikael_Svahnberg Ah, the Mastiff
And yeah, you could rig something so a grenade hangs on the slatted armour, but the explosion still wouldn't penetrate the vehicle: most of the force would be absorbed by the very slatted armour it's hooked on, and the rest by the thick armour plate.
It really is quite fascinating just how different the vehicles we bought for Afghanistan and Iraq are to the Snatch Land Rover. The Landies were just normal Defender 110s with a bit of extra armour plate, but the new stuff like the Mastiff and the Ridgeback are purpose-designed armoured transports that can shrug off an RPG or an IED like a person would shrug off being hit by a football.

@Mikael_Svahnberg I need to go look at my father's copy of SoldF again too. I think it had a section on using duck & cover in case of nearby nuclear bomb going off.

I think the advice was "Kryp in under trekanten" (hide under your raincoat)

Well, tbh, this is likely as
gooduseless as any other advice in this situation.

Right. To you unfortunate swedish impaired out there, this might be translated as "crawl in under the threesome". Or "crawl in during the threesome".

As I am home I have now been able to consult my 1960 edition of SoldF. According to the section about protective action at atom detonation:
- close your eyes
- throw yourself down to the ground with your face down and hands in front of your face
- stay for about 15 seconds (until the shockwave has passed or debris stopped falling)
-
@Atazhaia I used to think that was pretty silly advice but after I learned more about nuclear weapon effects I think it sounds like pretty decent advice.

Addendum: If you happen to be immediately adjacent to a depression in the ground, such as a ditch, try to land in the depression when performing step 2.

@Buddy
I like this one, although I personally feel that the word "skeleton" is superfluous - it can't very well be in any other state - and its omission would have improved matters infinitely.

It fails the Rush Limbaugh test (if Rush can do it, it ain't art).
