Solar Roadways?

Webcam of the world's first Solar Freakin' Roadways installation, that no one will even drive on, and it is already almost completely broken and has yet to make a single watt of electricity, but is consuming electricity to run the LEDs. All of the panels on the periphery were DOA. The rest have been failing after install.

From that site:
Really?
-
@abarker Energy generation not found. Looks correct.
-
It is dark right now so you can see that only 7 of 30 panels are still operational. Well, the LEDs are operational. All of the panels were DOA for power generation.

Yes, and idiots still think it is a good idea.
-
@Polygeekery Yeah, the specific bookmark @masonwheeler was asking about points to a page about how to update work item processes when migrating from an old version of TFS, something I did about two years ago, but not all the work flows have been updated because some of the projects haven't been modified since.
-
@abarker but still a good example of why tech companies really need to think before naming their stuff. You could easily send a screenshot to a client and they think it is a link to a porn site.
-
@Polygeekery There's a popular brand of smoothies/juice drinks/etc that caters to the health-conscious, called "Naked." I can only imagine what a conversation would look like in which one person recommends to a co-worker that they try it.
-
@masonwheeler It would probably end with a talk with HR about workplace appropriate conversations and someone having to watch a video about sexual harassment.
-
"I haven't really gotten good results juicing on my own."
"You should try going Naked. It really shows off your abs!"

Dumping enough iron into the Sun should be enough to poison the nuclear fusion reaction
You'll just need lots of iron to do so

There's plenty about Baltimore to laugh at before you even get to the solar roadways.

Yes, yes. My bit about "now to figure out how" wasn't so much about doing the theoretical work as going from the theoretical to something that actually works. Last I checked, killing a star is still beyond the human race, technologically speaking.
Not that it really matters, because you've both Killed The Joke™.

It's simple. Send someone up in an X-Wing to shoot it down.

FFS, burning a little coal will doom us all. Let's fix it by altering the sun. That will have far less negative unforeseeable consequences.

Actually, reminds me of The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter, now that I think about it. It was a sequel to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine authorized by his estate. Interesting book, with some interesting events, including travel to an Earth without sunlight (thanks to a Dyson sphere around the Sun).

You're going to need a lot of water, and to change the laws of gravity.

@Deadfast I love how they've changed the marketing images from solid blocks of light, to arranged circles.

Contribute to global warming by heating up the pavement when it actually doesn't need it.
Actually, heating when it does need it contributes to global warming...

-
@Deadfast The senator from Idaho has a really fitting name for this project.

By the way, I'll cover photovoltaics in one of my classes later this year and I'll probably use Solar Roadways as an example of how knowing zilch about science can really hurt your wallet.
I'm also a bit disappointed in Nathan Fillion. Oh well.

@Rhywden solar umbrellas on big car parks makes a hell of a lot more sense, but that's not as cool as solar frickin' roadways. Who wants a car that's been kept out of direct sunlight and a big area of solar power generation when you could put the panels as low as possible, flat and with things covering them most of the time?
-

^ All of this.
Solar parking lots make no sense, because cars will be parked on them during peak sunshine hours. It would be cheaper and make much more sense to make solar car ports. Instead of Solar Freakin' Sidewalks, make solar roofs over the sidewalks and running paths. Instead of solar roadways, spend the money on rooftop solar.
All of this shit uses proven technology, available today, that can be angled toward the sun for maximum efficiency and does not have the technical hurdles of making a solar panel that you can drive on.
-
@Polygeekery large solar arrays also cause a not insignificant local cooling effect. On rooftop arrays that can reduce your AC costs
-
@Polygeekery said in Solar Roadways?:

They would make plenty of sense if you put the solar parts on a roof over the part where you park. It'd help keep vehicles cooler too just by providing more shade. But I guess that won't happen…

If you always get a spot in the shade and a bit more charge while you do your shopping, what's not to like? A panel-shaded parking lot would be a positive drawcard for any shopping centre.
-
@flabdablet I think that's four people who have said basically the same thing
-
@Jaloopa We must be right then! Great minds think alike…

Wouldn't a parking garage be better than a shaded parking lot?

So basically what I said 4 months ago in this very thread?
@masonwheeler said in Solar Roadways?:
Has anyone done anything to overcome the fundamental problem that roads don't make good solar panels, and solar panels don't make good roads?
Characteristics of a good solar panel:
- Placed up high for maximum unobstructed exposure to the sun.
- Smooth glass surface for minimal optical distortion.
Characteristics of a good roadway:
- Placed down low (frequently in the shade of trees or buildings, and constantly in the shade of vehicles) for maximum vehicular access.
- Rough-textured surface for maximum traction.
-
@aliceif said in Solar Roadways?:

What are the odds that a politician will morph that project into:
- Solar panels over cars on every level of a multi-story garage! MOAR PANELS!
- But not on the top level - because that would except a max building height code
- And would be quoted as a WIN because MOAR PANELS!
-
@dcon or just allow cars to park on the solar roof. Boom, double the parking spaces and it's still solar
