And there's no manual.
Want an idea of how small the card is?

Buy Switch game for your little kid. Little kid swallows the Switch game.
And no manual? Nintendo games are supposed to have manuals!
-
@anonymous234 You're forgetting that this is the new,
damned to die like the turgid AAA studios they're foolishly imitatingimproved Nintendo. Now with DLC!
-
In their defense, the point of game packaging is to stand out in the gamestore and be easy to find in your collection at home. If the box was the size of a quarter, it would make those goals more difficult. You're not supposed to throw it away the way you might the box your hard drive came in.
-
@Kian The cases could have been the same size as they are for the 3DS cards.

Are you trying to get the package designers laid off???

It's a trick to get you to buy Nintendo Power.
-
Also, Vita did it first, didn't it?
-
@Maciejasjmj Yep, and it's just as much of a waste.

in fact, shrinking the packages should reduce design costs, because there's less space to design
-
Any packaging is a waste.

They seem to be about the same size as a Vita cartridge is.

The vita one is less of a waste because it contains a manual that is nearly the same size as the case.
-

So actually it wastes paper as well as plastic.
-
@NedFodder what else do you do when your parents are driving you home after buying the new game?
-
@Jaloopa Play it, it's a portable console.
-
-
Meh...you gotta have something reasonable size to display, not to mention wrap as a gift. Grandparents will feel better dropping the $30 ($50? who fucking knows ) for something that size than a tiny package that's easy to lose.
-
I'm sure that retailers would also refuse to sell items which are basically theft attractants.
At least that's the urban myth behind the fact that SD cards still have to be sold in these monstrosities:
-

The "big" Switch games like Zelda or Mario cost $60.
The smaller ones like ARMS, Splatoon or Mario Kart, on the other hand, cost only $60.
And the really shitty ones like 1-2-Switch that are basically minigames, can go down to a measly $50.
Cheap!
Edit: Puyo Puyo Tetris only costs $40, so there's that too.

That makes me think of the original packaging for CDs. There was the normal jewel case, like you see today, but enclosed in a cardboard thing about a foot long and then shrink wrapped.
-
@Steve_The_Cynic There was also the Sega CD games, where they were jewel cases that were almost twice as long and three times as thick as a regular jewel case.
-

As far as I recall, the only Vita games that come with anything like a manual are released in Japan. All the games released for the US have either nothing or a DLC voucher.
-
@ChaosTheEternal I'd have thought that they would at least come with a bunch of stupid advertising inserts for things you either don't want or already have…
-
@RaceProUK said in This is how a Nintendo Switch game is packaged:
Sega CD
And the Sega Saturn, and some early PlayStation games. Can't say I understand why they did long box cases, but now they're a pain, because they're hard to find cheap enough to replace broken cases.

Wait, people buy physical copies of Vita games? Other people buy Vita games? I think you're making things up...
-
@Magus I've heard the Vita is quite the success in Japan
-
@RaceProUK I should hope so; it's a great console. I think they still get constant new releases, of which 2% make it out of the country.
-
Hold on... where's the card with the code for the Club Nintendo points?
Oh god, that doesn't exist anymore! D:
-
@anonymous234 Yeah, they killed that off a while back.
-
@RaceProUK IIRC that was so that it would be about the same size as either the VHS tapes on the same shelf or the Genesis cases on the same shelf.
-

Did they figure out how thumbsticks work by now? I still own a PSP, but it's downright impossible to play any 3d game on it.

Only in America, AFAIK. (That’s to say, I never saw one around here and didn’t know they existed until I reached this page via this one.)

The compact disc in its shiny, 5-by-51/2-inch jewel box can be stashed easily in a thief’s pocket.

How big are their pockets?!

Pokemoon and Pokemon Sun didn't come with manuals.
-
@Yamikuronue Have you ever seen a hoodie?
Maybe it's just me. I used to be kind of legendary at all the things I could stuff into pockets. This one time in high school, at a party, we decided to play "reverse scavenger hunt": like a scavenger hunt, except you could only score points for things you actually had on you.
After about the 5th time I pulled some completely random thing out of one pocket or another, an aggravated member of the other team cried out, "your pockets are like Mary Poppins's freaking carpetbags!"
-
@masonwheeler Oh, I guess a hoodie pocket. My senpai ( @kaelas ) informs me he used to have jeans with pockets big enough for a jewel case too, so now I'm just envious of men's pockets.
-

Is that what they're calling them nowadays?
-
@RaceProUK You know who fucking figured it all out already?
The winners of the early 16-bit era in Japan, NEC.
Jewel case with a chip card in it.
1987

Yeah, I can definitely fit a jewel case in my cargo pockets.
-

Not in that game. But there's clearly the space, which other games use:

Try one of these, a US military ECWCS parka:
http://cdn3.volusion.com/nmhpr.xstwq/v/vspfiles/photos/cold-weather-jacket-2.jpg?1419084546
Not only are the lower pockets big enough that you can carry several DVD boxes in each of them if you want to, there are two chest pockets that are about as large, running from the central zipper all the way to where the sleeve is attached, and covering most of the chest, height-wise. Better yet, you might not find those pockets even if you own such a parka.

TBH, yes. Not in the way you’re obviously joking about, but they close with velcro and they’re inside the front fly but outside the zipper. Even if you open the coat, you’re unlikely to notice them unless you look closely.

Nintendo uses their own batshit block system to measure memory which has a limit of about 64k blocks. That limit is somewhat close to the size of an 8gb card but leaves a lot of unused space in bigger cards. This was an age ago though so it could be fixed now.
