One of my favourites is this one:
it's a........ boat....
with a duck holding a shotgun on the deck....
the duck points the shotgun at the sun and shoots....
A rabbit falls out of the sun, stunned by the force of the blast....
but before the rabbit hits the lake it recovers and starts charging a kamehameha....
The animation for charging the attack overrides the animation for falling so now the rabbit is glitched and floating in mid air, a perfect target for the duck to unload the second barrel of the shotgun...

I haven't watched it (at work currently) but, just from what I see here.... I'm guessing it's painted deceptively and basically the illusion is all in the camera angles?

change painted to topologically mapped and you're there
@Mason_Wheeler said in Is it a duck or a rabbit?:
ll in the camera angles?
basically, but it's still pretty neat

Viewing angle, yes, but not painted. It's due to the actual profile of the pieces.
Seeing them being rotated 90 degrees is pretty amazing. They seem to change shape, with the reflection 'not matching,' to boot.

It's a complex shape which your brain maps into something simpler due to the perspective, but that then causes those anomalous results. Here's a few alternatives from the same inventor:

So basically a duck. Does he float?

That one really does move.

It's not the interaction with the screen pixels, it's that it's moving relative to your eye. Moving your eyes up or down while you're looking at it has the same effect.

Heck, even the usual saccades of your eyes are enough to trigger the effect, making it look as if things are moving when they really aren't. (Check out little patches of the image at a time to see that I'm right on that.)
Weird stuff. Great!

Trippy
Especially when you stare at one section, see it's not moving, but the rest of the box is still "rotating".

Not technically an illusion but still fun.

You need to tweak your optical inputs.

I did, and slightly-lightened circles did not count as a dot.

Or rules on what constitutes a dot.
