Expiration Date High Score
-
Based off the xkcd:
By cheating a bit and going with an item I found in my house (as I technically bought the house with everything in it) would give me 78.125 with a jar of homemade jam that would have expired in 1992 that I found in 2017.
Otherwise I tend to be rather good at pruning the cupboards so I'd only have a real high score of 5.55 or something.
-
I moved into my current place about a year ago, and I didn't have the foresight to bring any expired items with me. I guess I won't be scoring high on this one.
-
I have a tin of Mustard Powder that has the price in Deutschmarks on it, no expiry date that I can see though so I can't play :(
/It still tastes fine

@TimeBandit The same with expiry dates on honey

I once had some expired peanut butter. The Internet told me peanut butter doesn't actually expire, so I ate it. That was the only time in my entire life I've had food poisoning.
-
We cleaned out the living room this past Sunday; that gave me a 27.2Ì…7Ì….
-
@mott555 Well, you never repeated the experiment, so how can you be sure that it wasn't just coincidence and that one actually caused the other?
-
@cvi I've eaten a lot of very questionable things during my life, with no problems except for some brief diarrhea some time later, sometimes. But after the peanut butter incident, I spent almost an entire day curled up on the couch with nausea and stomach pain, wondering if I should take myself to the emergency room but feeling so terrible I couldn't even get up to do that.
-
@mott555 The one time I had food poisoning, it took me about 2 days to fully recover. So, I don't really blame you for not repeating the experiment. (But ... for science!)

NaN. No expiration date that I could find, and date found is not defined, either, as it was never really lost; I just never got around to using it. It was a package of Williams Sonoma strawberry Bundt cake mix, and it was probably around 20 years old when I finally threw it away last year after I found out I can't eat gluten and would never be able to bake it.

Was bored so decided to check the herb drawer. Found a can of aromat which expired in 2009. Given that the chief ingredients are freeze-dried herbs and salt, I'll take my chances.

@dfdub why'd you cross out salt but replace it with salt?
Filed under: Enough with the fucking MSG in everything!!!

Funny that, I got food poisoning from home-made pizza. That was a fun night, especially since I was on the top bunk at that point...

My sister's first BF scored around 90 once. He went looking for coffee one day when they were like 16 and found a packet in my mom's pantry that had expired when he was about 2. And yes, we had moved since then
-
@LaoC That violates the "must be something you purchased" rule though.

@dangeRuss tip: never listen to anything Adam Conover says ever.

Name one thing he said that is false
-
@dangeRuss Nothing he says is technically false, it's just very very misleading.

Do you have an example? I'm sure since his show has to be edited for time there's only so much detail he can go into. What have you found misleading about his stuff?

@dangeRuss here's my favorite.

To be fair honey does go a bit odd after half a decade.
When my mother was cleaning out the cupboards to paint them in the late 90's I found a packet of crisps that expired in 1989. There was an adult in the room so I didn't get to try them but I was furious that they only cost 12p. I beleive they were 25p to buy new in the late 90's. They cost about 80 cent now.

gluten is what stopped you eating it? I'm equal parts impressed and amused.

Do you mean the way it crystallises and gets crunchy? That's fully reversible, you just put the jar in hot water and then leave the whole lot until everything is room temperature again, the honey will be back to being clear.

Celiac's a bitch. I remember when I wasn't allowed to eat any gluten. Imagine bread that tastes like cardboard, at literally every meal that requires bread in it.

I've been slowly watching the progress of this honey-filled bear. Lots of crystals.
-
@DogsB I have a jar of honey I bought about a decade and a half ago. I still use it occasionally, tastes fine (as you might deduce, I don't eat it very often).
I did throw out a jar of milk powder (to be used in coffee) last year (2018), because it had become hard as a brick. Expiration date was 2001 if I remember correctly.
I'm taking my coffee black since 1988.
