@Polygeekery Does discord have ? It seems necessary.
Does now. But you have to pay to use it or something.
Server specific emoji are limited to use on that server by users unless they pay for Discord Nitro, which will let them use it cross-server. Nitro also allows use of animated emoji.
I wondered how they made money.

I'm so glad I left this back in 2017 when I quit my job because the quality of discourse has declined enough to hurt even then.
-
@Polygeekery did you know about the leftist echo chamber IRC that existed in 2016?
-
@aliceif no, but I don't even care that you guys have an echo chamber. It is only the hypocrisy of some of the participants that bothers me. The same ones who bitch and accuse us of having an echo chamber, or even the garage, have recreated it all over there.
But it is apparently okay when they do it. Rules for thee but not for me. The height of hypocrisy. These are the same asshats that call us Nazis and alt-right for disagreeing with them.
-
@aliceif said in Fuck this place:

Lowercase d or uppercase D? Keep in mind that we now have some younguns who never got to experience one of those firsthand, and wonder why we ever migrated off it.
It also kind of saddens me that it takes a crisis like this to bring old regulars out of the woodwork.
-
@Polygeekery is it hypocrisy or is it just that boomers are too stupid for instant messaging
When people use a modern platform targeted at millennial gamers and not a forum, the members will be different. Also, off-forum, unlike the garage.
But really, I've left the forum and all its bullshit back in 2017, and am only now entering here to add fuel (no I wasn't sent).
And I might report a bug, somehow typing a word leads to random stuff getting appendi-duplicated.
-
@aliceif oh, parentheses are syntax I forgot

@aliceif said in Fuck this place:

It doesn't matter. It is all hypocritical and cowardly. @blakeyrat, @Weng and @Lorne-Kates, all hypocritical cowards. And @Weng is also eunuch.
They are all free to do what they wish and think what they wish, where they want to do so. But some of those choices make them hypocritical cowards.
-
@Groaner said in Fuck this place:

Must be the former. The latter would imply there was some quality that could decline.
-
@aliceif said in Fuck this place:

Boomers were instant messaging before I was even born:
-
@Polygeekery You have a concerning fascination with my penis or lack thereof.
I'm also wondering why you think eunuch is an effective insult in the first place. You don't just pick an adjective and sneer it at people. Effective insults are way more complicated than that.

@Weng said in Fuck this place:
It's "everyone who acts like an abusive dickhead".
So Lorne is first against the wall then? I quite enjoyed his canter but it will be sad to see him go.
The garage is something of a cesspit at times but the regulars have the decency to keep it here. Funnily enough, as someone else pointed out, it's those that disavow of it that are responsible for most of the leakage. The author of this thread being the primary example. As per usual he's rage quit the thread as soon as he's shit up the thread.
I'm glad that Blakeyrat is still around. If he's posting tech related stuff it would be interesting to read it but it's also funny to note that he was responsible for a lot of leakage too.
-
@Polygeekery said in Fuck this place:
@blakeyrat thinks we are all white supremacists:
This is effectively saying (having gone back and read the post in context) that one cannot discuss white supremacy and the history of it without being racist. That's just silly.

@Lorne-Kates It's not just this place, radicalization is happening everywhere.
Though it happened a lot faster here it seems.

There's a reason why we have rules in society regarding decorum and they have nothing to do with "oppression".
I'm coming here to get away from your 'non oppressive' society.
I've been on forums with rules of conduct, fucking 'netiquette' plastered all over them, and they are nauseating safe space retard dens. 'It's only my opinion...', 'I don't want to offend anyone, but...', etc, and admins screaming at anyone making 'confrontational' remarks. Fuck. This. Shit.
You do realize that this is exactly not what I'm talking about? If you have people screaming at other people then you don't have a "safe space" or anything.
Here's the thing: This place is a massive echo chamber, people screaming and cursing at each other in the Garage. What exactly is that supposed to accomplish?
It will do precisely nothing. Well, the trolls will feel fine because they can trigger some snowflake or anything but in the meantime you'll drive away the moderates and people who like discourse without being insulted. We've seen that multiple times. Look at Yami or Arantor. They've washed their hands of this place exactly to that level of shittiness.
I myself am not receptive to any arguments by boomzilla or anyone else of his ilk anymore - his willful ignorance, his petty cherry-picking and his superiority complex don't really show me that his arguments are anything worth listening to. I'm now either ignoring what the other side says, calling them out on their hipocrisy or making fun of them by trolling right back. I don't really get angry anymore.
For all their talk of someone being "retarded" I don't really think that they've been doing much introspection.
You may now proceed to yell at me further but I don't really care. They always want rules but only in very specific and opportune places. If they don't profit from those rules personally or cannot perceive any benefit due to being intellectually challenged, then they're against it. And they're pathologically incapable of, as we say in Germany, "thinking ahead for five meters of a gravel road".

I really, really, hope not, I thought he was a very decent chap. I didn't agree with a lot of his politics, but he said what he actually thought and, as far as I can see, he listened if you weren't just looking for a fight. I don't think he's alt-right, which just seems to be a nebulous term anyway. And I don't recognise the racism mentioned earlier in the thread.
The garage has been leaking a lot and the easy solution for that is for the mods to do their job and put it back there. And it is a job, in reward for the poistion you have to donate your time, if you don't want that then elect another mod(s).
I don't agree at all with @Weng that he's powerless to act without some form of forum constitution, I've been a mod on a decently large forum and we didn't have a hard list of rules, you talked with other staff if it was something that might be borderline but otherwise you just acted with your best judgement. There doesn't seem to be much point in you existing as a mod otherwise?
It doesn't have to always be the stick either, edit the offending post and just warn the user, most people can take the hint.Just my 2p.

You may recall that I don't exempt myself from doing this. I'm fully aware that I'm not blameless.
So I'm not sure why you feel the need to point this out when I've done so myself already?
The point is that I chose my previous example of "laissez-faire parenting" not by chance. Pretty much anyone should recognize that this style of "anything goes" parenting has disastrous results. The complete opposite, authoritarian-style parenting is equally atrocious. The middle is where it's actually at: Firm but fair rules.
That is difficult and harder, of course, because it always requires fine-tuning, introspection and reflection and is an ongoing process and does not have a static set of rules. Mistakes will be made, yes, but that's the case with anything that's complicated.
This absolute freedom some of you guys demanding is a sign of cowardice or laziness: You don't need to think about what you're doing, you can just give in to any impulse that comes to mind immediately, ruled by your lizard-brain. It's easy.
That's all it boils down to: You've been so indoctrinated with a fear of "oppression" that you go completely overboard in the opposite direction. This binary, black-and-white thinking is a rather tried-and-true hallmark of US'ian mindsets.

You didn't understand my post. But that's ok.
I'm against 'rules of conduct', because they produce boring/irritating safe spaces. Here's the thing: This place is a massive echo chamber, people screaming and cursing at each other in the Garage. What exactly is that supposed to accomplish?
Freedom to scream and curse each other.
It will do precisely nothing.
Why would you want the forum to do anything?
Well, the trolls will feel fine because they can trigger some snowflake or anything but in the meantime you'll drive away the moderates and people who like discourse without being insulted.
You have general forum for normal conversation and civilized salon for super mild conversations (where you can do something, I guess).
I myself am not receptive to any arguments by boomzilla or anyone else of his ilk anymore - his willful ignorance, his petty cherry-picking and his superiority complex don't really show me that his arguments are anything worth listening to.
Yeah, well, I don't care about your personal dislikes.
I'm now either ignoring what the other side says, calling them out on their hipocrisy or making fun of them by trolling right back. I don't really get angry anymore.
Good, thicker skin is a good idea. Ignoring what others say not necessarily, but whatever works for you.
You may now proceed to yell at me further but I don't really care.
Where did I yell at you?
They always want rules but only in very specific and opportune places.
Like what rules exactly?
The general problem is not with people, but with topics. Political, social and ethical topics are inflammatory by their nature. You can't have coy discussions on those topics - I know you think you can, but you can't. People get angry and call other side idiots in those areas by the nature of those areas.
Now, introducing rules to eliminate aggression and name calling seems like a good idea, but it's a disaster in practice (like communism, sorry, sorry). The practical effect is that the team enforcing the rules promotes their side of discussions, which produces, in time, echo chamber, and later, desolate snooze fest.
Natural idea to overcome this is 'diverse moderation team'. Also sounds great, but doesn't work in practice. Sooner or later some moderators start to 'win' - those that have more time and/or are more motivated. Others leave or stop caring.
I've seen this happen on many forums I took part in - I don't go there anymore.
Garage/normal/civilized is a good separation. The specific problem here, as stated by others multiple times already, is shit slinging outside the garage. Which takes form of derailing threads to inflammatory areas or by starting inflammatory topics in general. This should be moderated, which as far as I can see, is.
Lorne wants his healthcare discussion 'researched and fact based'? Why doesn't he go to the salon with this?
-
@MrL said in Fuck this place:
Why would you want the forum to do anything?
Because doing something is the point of a forum. And although there are a few details that could be improved, it generally does do that quite well.
