I mean, look, you can bring up other reasons why electric cars might not be a viable product today, but having to charge for an hour to get 1,000 miles of battery life isn't one of them, if there is a commercial need for a better charging infrastructure.
Still wouldn't be possible for most of the places I've worked, in central parts of cities where there aren't enough space to put a charger, and there aren't any dedicated parking spots.
Or the place with tens of thousands of parking spaces, where they'd have to dig up the parking areas to put down the charging infrastructure.

I'm pondering logistics. If there was a standard 15 amp cord available for each space, would it charge up sufficiently in eight hours to drive the commute back home? Keeping in mind that most likely you'll have a higher rated charger at home, which should be able to double the rate of charging so it doesn't actually need to return to 100 percent while at work.
In theory, if eight hours of slow charge are enough for half an hour of drive (assuming your drive is more than half an hour but less than an hour), that may be all you need realistically. And weekend charging (assuming you don't do anything) should offset the rest in case the house can't fully charge to 100 percent either.
Does this make sense?
Of course, you'd have to convince $employer to run an extension cable or whatever infrastructure, but obviously that's future.

@Tsaukpaetra Wikipedia has a page that mentions both rough charging times and ranges for a number of different models. According to the numbers there, most can charge fully in 8-9 hours or less from a standard outlet.
If your daily commute is close to the range of the car, you probably should be looking for something else (for now). But for a lot of people ~100km (the lower end of ranges) is likely enough for the daily commute.

I'm willing to bet a million dollars (that anyone's willing to lend me) that these range numbers are calculated based on ideal conditions - or, in other words, that literally none of them take into account the usage of air conditioning, the usage of the cabin heater, the ambient temperature, the age of the battery... none of that. It's all part of the con to get as many
scientifically illiterate suckersbuyers as possible on the train to Shitsville that is EV.

That doesn't sound right... A person I know who has an electric car said she gets about 4MPH from a standard outlet. There's no way that'll fully charge in 8-9 hours. (It looks like most of those numbers are saying how long for an 80% charge)

Especially around here! My 18 mile commute (15mi on 65MPH highways) can be considered good if it takes 40min. (Sometimes google doesn't get traffic, so I know the "ideal" commute would be 24min)

Charging from a standard outlet is and may lead to . Sure, electric cars comes with such a cord but it's really only for use if there's no other options and need charge now. You want a dedicated high-amp charging station, because otherwise you put too much strain on the socket. A family had their house burn down because they used a normal socket and the load got too much.
Now, over here, if you want a proper charging station for your electric car at your home, well... Using the local utility company pricing for the main fuse: A normal house may need 25A tops which ends up about $600/year. A proper charger would require a 63A fuse iirc, which costs near $1700/year. A slight difference. And then there's the cost of upgrading the wiring and installing the charger too ofc...
(My house, being small, only has a 16A main fuse which is about $300/year. I would not allow any electric car charging at all on my property.)

Most homes have an electrical service of between 100 to 200 amps.
Most "normal" circuits here have 15 Amps (some go up to 20 if you need that sort of thing). And then big appliances (ranges/stoves, HVAC, water heater get 30 - 60 amps...maybe more?).

That's pretty crazy. Modern US homes have 240V/200A services as general standard for new homes.

As I said, a normal house would have a larger fuse. I, however, have a small house, so it doesn't need anything larger really. (3 rooms and kitchen counting the local way, 2 bedroom 1 bathroom counting the US way.)

@boomzilla Water boiling time is on par with any other electric stove. It has 3 burners, I have used all 3 at once no problem. The stove does run on all 3 phases, though.

Well, belgium you all for having your own houses, that you can upgrade to EV-capable.
The apartment complex that I live in (230 something apartments) expressly forbids even interior heaters in the parking lot. Cabling can't support them.
Also, the engine heater sockets run on timers, giving you 2 hours of power per day (at a time of your choosing), unless you go out to screw it ( ) for more once the 2 hours are up.'Course, the real joke is that the government's goal for EV-only is 2024 or thereabouts.

We have a montly $6.73 "Basic Customer Charge" for residential service. Then the rate appears to vary between 5.0032¢ and 7.7285¢ per kWh depending on time of year and how much you use, although it might be more if at least 10% is renewable energy, plus taxes, etc, etc.
