Google+ officially coming to an end

...after a security bug.
-
I thought it was already shut down. Not even .
-
-
@Zecc I did a search for this before posting it. Must've been posted in the 3 minutes it took me to post it.
-
Aww damn, where am I going to go to get my pony fix now???

Tumblr, like normal people.
-
The only thing I have ever used Google+ for is logging in here. What happens when Google+ doesn't exist any more?
-
For Google, a data privacy reckoning may finally come as a result of a service that it admits almost no one uses much anymore.
Anymore? When did anyone use it to begin with?

Well, Goog was able to claim they had a lot of users because anyone with a YouTube or GMail account automatically got a Goog+ account. Of course, people actually using Goog+ is probably somewhere around the same as people still using MySpace.
-
@El_Heffe Personally, I prefer Friendster.
-
Some time ago, Goog+ announced a policy requiring you to use your "real name". At the time, Goog+ was run by an Indian fellow named Vic Gundrata. Except, "Vic" wasn't his real name. Like many Indians in the U.S., he adopted a more "American" first name.
So, the person demanding that you use your real name . . . . was using a fake name.

I'm pretty sure that login is for Google in general. At least for me, the same login works for Google+, Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, and whatever else Alphabet acquires in its path.

Yeah, I just realized that. The login page shows a G+ logo instead of just Goog, and that confused my brain for a few minutes.

That's the official branding for the Google SSO thing. Presumably to help increase G+ adoption rates.

Better link another toss-away account!
We suggest FaceBook, they haven't had anything like this happen in the last few months...

google--;

google--;
--google
. It's quicker and wastes less resources; e.g. it doesn't need to create a copy of itself first...

I would expect this to be optimized by the compiler.
If the compiler can't optimize that trivial case away, what is the optimizer good for?

Tumblr won't let you view the good stuff without logging in anymore.

Where will Linus Torvalds go now? I thought that Google+ was like uber-nerd territory.
Anyway. It's Gundotra.

Torvalds will start its own command-line only social network, which will then be picked up by fans and grow organically without much consideration for consistency.

Which means this was inevitable:
After hearing the initial news I fired up the Google+ app. Nothing new for me for 74 weeks.
-
It was only a matter of timeβthe same day that Google announced it was shutting down Google+ in the wake of a data leak, two users filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco, saying that their privacy had been violated.
We found the people still using Google+!
-
Actually I have been using Google+ for years to share stuff with family and have them share stuff with me because I don't use Facebook. Well, because of this news, I guess my plans didn't really pan out. Back to email it is, then. RIP new tab page notification counter and comment sections instead of email chains.

If you feel you need it, you could pay for it. They said they're keeping it for businesses.
-
@Parody I don't need Google+ but it was a neat little thing while it lasted. it was a nice way to share something with family that didn't generate a notification alert on their phone like email or messaging would, so they could check it at their leisure. First world problem.
-
@LB_ Well, you could just use Google Sites for that.
Huh, it's still up, I could have sworn it was outside their attention span by now. Well, I still stand by this even though it now verges on the helpful.

Apparently Google+ main selling point, "We're not Facebook" didn't work out quite the way they were hoping.

That gives a whole other perspective to the concept of "rewriting history"

Some time ago, Goog+ announced a policy requiring you to use your "real name".
Don't forget that the insane bullshit was even better than that.
See, G+ AUTOMATICALLY got linked to your gmail, your youtube, your google docs, everything.
So if, for some reason, Google thought you were using a fake name (all hail the Mighty Algorithm)-- because it imported your Youtube name, or because you have a "obvious fake" name like Jake Butt-- your G+ got permanently suspended, with the usual Google appeal / recourse of "fuck you, no humans here".
Which also took out your gmail account (and all your mail), and your youtube account, and your google docs...
Anyone who was even mildly curious about G+ dropped it like a toxic hotshit and never looked back.

You mean a BBS?
-
hehehehe--- so how many android phones with older OS that will NEVER be OTA updated-- and that are deadlocked into G+ -- will just stop working?
-
@Lorne-Kates Since when were Android phones locked into G+?

I dunno, at some point? Android was pushing G+ fucking HAAAAARD onto everything.
"Why log in when you can G+?"
"Hey, look at this cool G+ icon!"
"We renamed all your apps to G+!"I assume enough people got duped into it, and I assume it irreversible.
-

-
@Lorne-Kates Your G+ login is basically an all-encompassing Google account. You even said yourself it's tied to YouTube, Gmail, and everything else. So, nothing's going to change there. You still have your account, it's just the G+ part of your Google account is going to be defunct.
-
@Lorne-Kates So never?
The Google account and G+ aren't the same thing.
