Feature request: notifications for downvotes

@HardwareGeek Isn't he still writing front page articles, though?
inb4 "there's a front page?"
-
@HardwareGeek He moved to the Front Page, where all good stories go to die. Ok, ok, I might be exaggerating
I thought there was at least some money awarded for it, unlike the peanut gallery over here...
EDIT: Ah, d. That's what you get for wanting to grab a correct link.

Not really a move. He'd already been writing for the front page; he just stopped writing anything else (here).

No, it's this one: https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/1372903
Which is a post about getting NodeBB to run with actual SQL.
And with actual SQL, you could quickly query the database to see what the top-rated post is across the entire forum.
You mean like this?
pid | type | count ---------+----------+------- 15001 | upvote | 96
Vote manipulation at its best!

Does that exclude the Likes thread?

@HardwareGeek I just looked on his most voted post (INB4 the pedantic, on the current vote system).
https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/9419/yet-another-sleep
Don't stop reading at the code snippet, the real good WTF is the time synchronization one past it.
-
@sockpuppet7 Yes, it has been linked some time relatively recently (i.e., somebody drew attention to it, like you just did), because I had previously read and voted on it.

Yes, this part excludes /t/1000:
LEFT JOIN "imported_topics" it ON it."tid" = p."tid" WHERE it."discourse_id" IS NULL OR it."discourse_id" <> 1000

There's a forum I visit (it's kind of like reddit) where you have to choose from a pre-filled list of reasons (off topic, spam, troll, me-too, etc) when you want to downvote something. Everyone can see how many people downvoted for each reason. This reduces accidental votes and makes people think about why they don't like a specific post.
I agree with blakey that voting sshould be removed, as it will lower the quality of discussion as this forum grows. but the thing I mentioned above can help reduce bad blood in the meantime.

I like voting because it lets me quickly mark agreement (or humor) with a post without having to make a separate post. It's a way of saying "me too" without cluttering up the comment space with content-free comments.

It also has metamoderation, where you evaluate some other person voting. If people are doing a good job, they get more moderation points. If you comment on a topic, your votes are cancelled and you can't vote on that topic again.
Dunno how it isn't a popular forum platform, I think it's too hard to set up that thing.

I also don't use votes, so he's not the only one. And Tsaukpaetra uses them, but in such a way that his votes are pretty useless to anyone (except him). So yeah, not every one uses votes to say "me too" or "your a retard!11!!".
Still, as far as I'm concerned, not caring about votes doesn't mean I'd want them to be removed.
Also and about your original feature request, I kind of agree that since we have upvote notifications, we should have (optional, default being off is OK for me) downvote notifications as well.
As far as I'm concerned I would also be OK for downvotes to be public (especially since they are available to mods and some mods are very active in some very aggressive threads, so even though they haven't visibly abused their power until now (although I remember a couple of cases where they sideways commented on the identity of a downvoter, so that's borderline there), I'm kind of uncomfortable with the asymmetry of information), but I'm clearly firmly in a minority on that one, so...

Evidently, a whole lot of people, given how many use the voting system.
Look, part of what makes a forum is gauging how positive your statement was received. I know you personally don't give a shit how anybody reacts to your posts, seeing that's kinda your schtick. You're pretty much the most miserable person I ever observed on the Internet outside of Tumblr and Twitter, and that's saying something. But just because you don't see the value in it, doesn't mean you should deprive other people of it if they disagree. If you want to deprive other people of stuff they like, then that makes you an asshole. But, again, that's your schtick around here.

There's been no mention that one single person has to do the "FUCK ALL YOU GUYS", so average size would be perfectly fine to daisy chain.
( Although to really get all you'll have to close a circle)

Make that optional too, then. Same way edit history is public if you make it.
-
@pie_flavor Maybe, although that would need changing our private joke of assigning every downvote to boomzilla to clear up potential confusion. But it should be easy to create a new user @downboater and use that instead of The One We Are All Alts Of (hey, a new nickname for him! "towaaao"...).
In any case, given how heated the discussion that lead to the present situation was, this is entirely , I don't think this has any chance of happening. Even your request here of just getting a notification (still anonymous) seems unlikely to happen.
-
Downvotes are pretty pointless if you're never told about them. The only times I realise I've got any are:
- I get a 5/10/whatever upvotes notification and see my score is actually at 4/9/whatever -1
- I happen to see an old post of mine and get curious as to who upvoted it, so click or hover
- I happen to see an old post of mine with a negative score
- I've been trolling and expect downvotes so go looking
-
The most annoying thing I was thinking about recently is that if you want to keep using this feature you'd want block some people from showing up in your notifications but downvotes are anonymous.
See for example @masonwheeler 's thread: https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/24774/project-in-progress/1. When somebody went around and downvoted every one of his posts in that thread, the downvote notification feature would unleash a torrent of notifications. The only choice then is to disable notifications for it (hoping you have the option), and that would also mean it'd better be separate from upvote settings in case you do care about those.

Yup! Unread status is preserved per post (with a little notifier visible on the post itself), which only gets flipped if the post is actually on your screen (and not, say, if you view a post several posts down). Additionally you get notifications for all your likes, mentions, and tracked threads, and they don't interfere with one another or cause anything to get set to read when it shouldn't. They also take up a tiny amount of space each, so the notifications box generally accommodates all of them at once. And as a bonus, not only do they only get cleared when you view the relevant post, they always get cleared when you view the relevant post - no clicking every single like notification to make it go away from posts you've already seen.
Imagine that, basic functionality.
-
@pie_flavor said in Feature request: notifications for downvotes:

@Tsaukpaetra Yeah, the naming of stuff totally matters.
I seriously don't understand how NodeBB could fuck that up. I could write the logic in my sleep. I'd have PRed it a long time ago if I knew JS.
