@dcon It's a "viral marketing campaign" from a Swedish advertising company called Odd Company.
Probably true, but the CEO is sticking to his story that they are a real company.

@anonymous234 said in Lime scooters:
Electric scooters are still the best thing that happened this decade, by the way. Cities will slowly become scooter-centric instead of car-centric and it will be glorious.
I'd agree if it was easier to hear them zooming in our general direction and if people didn't ride them on sidewalks.

Business idea: kangaroo sharing company.

From my car driver's perspective, the only thing that will change is that I will install a dashcam so I can film all the accidents that are bound to happen between pedestrians, cyclists, scooter drivers and pogo-stick riders, while feeling secure inside my rolling cage, strapped to my seat and surrounded by airbags .
You're right, it will be glorious

And kangaroos, if we find an investor.

Obviously they need their own lane. Bicycles could go in there too.
-
@anonymous234 I suggest using the existing off-road lane that's right next to a lot of existing roads.

Stockholm has been creating bike lanes for a decade or two. At the cost of car lanes.

Yes, bicycles lanes exist.
Regarding bicycles: I wish it was easier to hear them zooming in our general direction and people didn't ride them on sidewalks.

No slat armor? With all those car-seeking missiles, I'll have to look up what I can legally protect my car with. You can bet that the lemon-riders will not have proper insurance to cover any damage they may cause. And if they're not going to pay for it, then I'm not going to let them use my car's side as a cushion. Damn things are designed to protect cyclists these days, so they bend way too easy.

Yes, bicycles lanes exist.
Apparently not in the US, judging from this entire thread.

They exist, but most cyclists are assholes and don't use them properly.

And the scooter companies never pay for the damages that their products cause either. There have been numerous articles about it.

Well, if those lanes are there and the cyclist is recklessly not using them, the degree of moral regret felt by any motorist who happens to hit that cyclist would be lessened…
-
@El_Heffe That has to be one of the best summaries!
Startups are weird, man.
-

I already did that! (Not because of scooters though. It's because I often tow a trailer. People are extra assholes trying to get around me.)

Not a problem!
-
@dcon You do realize that that thing's never been driven anywhere close to water, right? Because if it had, those tyres would now be sporting mudguards. It only takes one stripe down the back for people to learn.
-
@acrow also, it is electric, so once it gets driven in water I imagine things would go awry. I am sure they start out sealed, but those things lead a rough life and I doubt that any manner of waterproofing could last long-term.
-
@acrow said in Lime scooters:

It depends. The MTB junkies clearly just don't care.

@El_Heffe said in Lime scooters:
I'm wondering if they are going to run into trademark problems.
IANAL, but according to my understanding of (U.S.; other jurisdictions may vary) trademark law, probably not. Trademarks exist to protect purchasers from confusion regarding the origin of the products they buy. There can be more than one company with similar trademarks if there is no likelihood of confusion. Since pogo sticks are unlikely to be confused with insurance or medical devices, there is probably not much grounds for an infringement claim.

@hungrier Unfortunately the ocean is on average about 1,500 miles away from the side of the roads here.

Free mud bath! Although I have a small mudguard in the front. Keeping my face clean is only a bonus. It's mainly to keep the suspension and headset as clean as possible.

If you plan on visiting please give me a few minutes to evacuate the bikes before torching the house down.

I like the fact that bicycle lanes keep them in one place where they are easier to hit with my car.

It's hard to use them properly when cars are parked in them and people are walking in them completely oblivious.
-
Yesterday I saw a scooter rider which was not driving on the sidewalk, even though there was no bicycle lane.
He wasn't occupying a whole street lane or rolling on the fast lane either.
No, he was riding on the wrong direction of a one-way street, close to the side-view mirrors of parked cars. (and opposite the wide sidewalk)

@Polygeekery said in Lime scooters:

They exist here too, but there is a stretch on my commute where I usually cycle on the sidewalk instead because:
- in the morning there is always a traffic jam and some drivers always block it and
- in the evening I arrive to the Troyan Bridge in a place where it cannot be crossed to the right side (and it's a marked cycling path).

Worse is big potholes and those thick plates they use to cover up holes where there is construction.
There was a big pothole (several inches deep and at least 4 sqft of area) that was on a nice downhill. Could have been very dangerous if I didn't see it a head of time.
