Damn, I wish I was this popular in HS. I guess it is a lot easier when the ratio of M to F is approaching 1.

Oi! I offered to pay rent. The only thing I'll swap for sex is chores. Also I have just enough sense not to get involved with a married woman.

Electric scooters are still the best thing that happened this decade, by the way. Cities will slowly become scooter-centric instead of car-centric and it will be glorious.
Meh. It will be better when it becomes pedestriacentric, eh?

What a miserable decade it's been, if that's the best.

Of course. Much easier to hit those guys than the ones on scooters

A friend of mine used to say married women are the best ones, since they won't come chasing you for that kid that happened. And they fuck right off after fooling around.

@hungrier referred to a webpage in Lime scooters that said:
Like it or not, Bird's controversial rental e-scooters are launching in Canada
But if they're launching into the canal or lake, that's OK…
-
@hungrier Do they have snow tires?
-
@dkf: Nah, Canadians are polite people.
-
@Zerosquare Sure, but saying "Sorry" after tripping over one of these things on the sidewalk isn't going to last very long.
-
@mott555 Not sure, but they have better security features in Canada.
Your hands will be frozen to the handlebar, so you can't loose your grip

It looks like collecting e-scooters got subcontracted in Turku, Finland. The salary they're offering to the people actually collecting the scooters is a flat €1 per collected device.
They'd have to collect around 1000 scooters per month just to make rent (incl. income-tax). Twice that to eat enough to offset the energy cost. 2000 / 30 days / 12 hours = 5 per hour. Not accounting for use of a vehicle, and assuming that they work 12/7.

Sounds like the scooter riders are worse than bicyclists at following traffic laws:

Possibly because bicyclists seem to be outside of the law in most areas (in that police do not ever bother citing them), while the scooters are a new annoyance and on the police's radar.

Give cyclists the same quality of access to the roads as cars and we can talk about laws again.
On some of my routes, if I want to uphold all the laws I either am faced with detours approaching half a mile in the wrong direction or multiple red lights (while cars only get one). Not to mention the bicycle lanes which don't deserve the name because they're either too narrow, full of potholes or end / begin very abruptly. Or all of the above.
Sometimes the route I'm mandated to take is even downright hazardous.

You forgot to mention all the glass and debris. And pedestrians walking their dogs.

We've got some very nice and wide bicycle trails in my part of the city that let you bypass road traffic. Yet bicyclists still choose to ride on the 45 mph trunk roads and get in the way.

There's probably a reason for that - similar to how there will be mud trails over grass even when there's an "official" paved way because the "official" way is too long or impractical.

If you give people nonsensical or impractical stuff they're supposed to use don't ask why they don't use it.
-
@Rhywden it was more like "Why would we want to encourage groups of people who have no courtesy towards others to be on the road at all?"
Or, "Why would we want to encourage cycling?"

Yeah, I know, it's all the rage with you but sometimes cycling is cheaper and faster than a car, especially on short distances. If I take my bike I'll be at my school in 10 minutes. If I take the car it's 12 to 15 minutes and I sometimes have to search for a parking space.
And "courtesy"? Seriously? Car drivers really shouldn't talk about "courtesy", considering the amount of times I've seen car drivers do dangerous stunts. And, as usual, dangerous to others.

These paths are 5 yards wide, paved yearly with really nice concrete, located safely about 10 - 15 yards away from the streets, parallel the main trunk roads, and are well-labeled and marketed as bicycle paths. So why ride on the trunk roads instead?

As I said, there will be a reason. And it won't be related to "I'm lazy" - because you know the kind of violation I'm seeing the most regarding cyclists? Driving on the walkway in order to avoid the car traffic.

Driving on the walkway to avoid the car traffic is literally the entire purpose of these pathways. And yet bicyclists choose to ride in 45 - 55 MPH car traffic ten yards away instead. It might not laziness, but it's definitely stupidity and a complete lack of self-awareness and perhaps a death wish.
EDIT: The scooters which started this whole conversation are only available in the downtown part of my city. There are no bike paths there, just low-speed-limit streets with lots of traffic lights. It's pretty safe to ride a bicycle on the roads there.

Yeah, you definitely feel entitled. You have proven as much so far with your laziness to consider other options - it always has to be the "I'm right because that way I don't have to think for myself" option when it comes to something you don't like.

I've seen dangerous (to both themselves and others) driving by both users of cars and bicycles. Neither group, as a group, can possibly be considered blameless. Car drivers at least (usually) stop for pedestrians using a crossing; far too many cyclists near work seem to think that that's an affront, and will barrel on through red lights while swearing at the crossing people (who definitely have the right of way at that point in law).
It's not what vehicle they're using that makes someone a dangerous jerkwad. The problem lies entirely between the ears of the driver/cyclist…

Plus as I understand it, in most jurisdictions pedestrians have right of way even if they're jaywalking. Also, as I understand it, bikes aren't pedestrians, but vehicles, so they are supposed to yield to pedestrians as well.

I don't understand why you're so opposed to the idea that some people are complete self-unaware morons in public. I mean, replace bike paths with PHP or something. Same exact stuff in a different domain.

@mikehurley said in Lime scooters:

I almost ran over a jaywalker several months ago. He jaywalked across a six-lane divided highway. I was stopped at a red light with a trailer, and he thought it was a good idea to walk between my truck and the trailer while crossing my lane, and this happened right as the light turned green and traffic started flowing. Had I not been watching my mirrors I'd have plowed right through him with an 8,000-lb double-axle trailer.
This'll probably piss Rwhyden off for no discernible reason, but there was a perfectly good crosswalk perhaps twenty yards in front of me that this guy could have used instead of hopping over my hitch in heavy traffic.

Legally true.
Personally I side with physics and say the car has the right of way.
