Mattress Suggestions?

@dragoon There is something called the "Price Triangle"
It basically goes like "Cheap, Good, Quick ... Pick Two".
-
I didn't argue otherwise, I stated that it has no relevance to the discussion we were having about quality of products as mid range vs. top range is not a quality metric within PC components. It is simply a price point of what is new vs. last years model. Quality has nothing to do with it on that level. Now within each level, there is certainly different qualities of components from different manufacturers and the like, but that is not what you were stating, so your point has no relevance to the discussion.
Further, the difference depends on the view point. While I may not save any money upgrading my machine every 18 months, I have a machine that is never more than 18months out of date vs your machine that is 7 years old. So, depending on the viewpoint, that might be beneficial to me. Even if the cost is the same. But again, this has nothing to do with quality, which is what we were originally discussing.

Except the top end models will last much longer than the mid range models in terms of time... just like the boots in the quote.
680Ti 2GB card can still probably play games like Prey at reasonable graphical settings, whereas I know a 660 GTX can only play it near low (my backup work PC has a 660GTX).
So it is directly comparable unless again you are blinkered.

How do they last longer? Once again, the metric that we were discussing was quality, the longevity of a PC is not based on quality.

@benjamin-hall Sealy, Simmons, Beautyrest are all good.
Just talk to the salesman. None of the brands at a reputable furniture store are going to suck.
-
We've had the cheap-o-pedic and the tempur-pedic and a few years ago got a Tuft & Needle and have been pretty happy with it.
-
@lucas1 said in Mattress Suggestions?:
@benjamin-hall Just buy another one when it wears out, we aren't in an age of scarcity.
Sorry you quote is total nonsense in the modern age. To get a cobbler to fix my boots is is half the price of my boots. It is more economical to buy a new pair more often, even if I would like to get them repaired (as I would imagine this is less wasteful in the grand scheme of things).
As someone who own three pairs of good leather boots, it as been prohibitively costly to keep them in good shape. Cobbers / Polish / Gumming etc.
So sorry mate. It doesn't work. It is like the bike snobs that talk about "Brooks Saddles", like they are magical. They are just a saddle. If they don't fit you bum they won't be comfortable however much you spend on polishing them.
You have entirely missed the point. It is not a statement about boots and wet feet, it is an analogy to why socioeconomic unfairness exists the way it does.
-
@dragoon My 1080Ti will last a lot longer that a 1050Ti, but towards the end of the 1080Ti's life there will be much cheaper cards than will out perform it.
The thing is that boots are much simpler and have gone into the mass production realm, as long as they are half decently put together they will be "Good Enough".
-
@pie_flavor Sorry. Again. I think the statement is redundant post scarcity.
As I pointed out. Boots became so cheap since the 1970s to the average worker what was said is no longer relevant in the modern age. Boots are cheap and they are of such good quality ... who cares?
Same with bedding. You can get decent Duvets and covers from ASDA for next to nothing. It is perfectly fine for the vast majority.
My Chavvy as fuck scumfuck step brothers and sisters own iPhones. People never had it soo good.
Even the poorest in the West are rich.
-
@lucas1 It is not about scarcity. It is about cost vs value over time.
-
You will not be able to go by anyone's recommendation.
Every single mattress store will carry roughly the same mattress, but will be called by a different model at different stores. What's the "Hudson" at once store is the "Feathercloud" at another. This is deliberate, because stores will only "price match GUARENTEE TRUST US WE WONT CUM IN YOUR MOUTH" for exact model matches.
Basically, mattress sales are about as scummy as used car sales. Go in with that in mind.
Go to a mattress store. If anyone comes up to bug you, say you're just looking. If they won't leave you alone, walk out and go somewhere else. You do not want to deal with that person.
Try out mattresses by actual laying down on them. Roll around. Spend a few minutes on them. Bring your partner (?) if this is to be a shared bed. I highly reccomend any of those "bowling ball" mattresses that don't bounce the other person every time you move.
Once you've found one you like, prepare to negotiate. It sucks, but only suckers pay full price. The markup on mattresses is astronomical, so there's lots of wiggle room. Don't quote me on this, but getting AT LEAST 20% off the ticket price is just a start. This is the attitude of "I like the mattress but I'm not sure it's kinda at the high end of my budget" thing. The salesperson knows you know that he knows that you know etc. Getting some extra sheets thrown in doesn't hurt.
Find out the TCO: does it need a box spring? Does the boxspring need supports? Are you buying a bedskirt or going "poor student don't do that" style?
Does delivery cost extra? Does hauling away your old mattress cost extra? WILL THEY CARRY EITHER OF THEM UP OR DOWN STAIRS? (Seriously, when I got my king bed delivered they tried to say "oh we don't move it up stairs" and I'm like who the hell has a bedroom on the main floor, so they did move it upstairs).
If the salesperson tries to pull any "we don't haggle" or any other sketchy stuff, just get up and leave. You can go to a different location of the same store, or come back later to talk to someone else. Don't settle for a bullshit artist.
Extended warranties are for losers, because 100% promise you they won't be able to honor it. Take that money you would have spent and put it under your mattress for a rainy day (see what I did there lol).
A new, comfortable mattress is an amazing purchase you'll always be happy with. Find one you like and that's in your budget.
-
@lorne-kates This is, of course, from a Canadian perspective. Do you know if American mattress stores have similar haggling practices?

No. In America you just shoot someone, and take their mattress.

Just make sure not to shoot them while they're on the mattress. Sleeping targets may be easier, but blood's a bitch to get out.
-
@benjamin-hall I bought a Tempur-Pedic® queen-size high end sponge bed ~9 years ago. Mine's on the firmer side, and while it has worn some over the years (I'm a pretty fat guy), it's still a great night's sleep. My back felt a lot better after moving away from my worn-out, standard style twin bed.
The only real down side is the price; I recommend the brand, but you'll want to look for a memory foam bed from another brand to hit your price requirement.

You do not want to deal with that person. You're not wrong. They'll also try to sell you on any number of other overpriced bits and bobs. Last time I went to a mattress store:
Salesman: "You've got to try this [$80] pillow!"
Heterodox: "Not really looking for a pillow today, just a mattress."
Salesman: "You have no idea how much the pillow contributes to the quality of your sleep! After all, the head is a third of your total sleep surface!"
Heterodox: [feigning intense interest] "A third, you say?!"
Salesman: [oblivious] "Yes! It has to be adequately supported!"
Heterodox: "Please excuse me for a moment, I have to go... over there or somewhere else out of earshot before I start laughing hysterically."

The same is true in Australia. I'd be surprised if the same didn't apply in the US too.
Speaking of which, here are some tips for buying mattresses in Australia. I'm sure most if it is universal.

You polish your cobbler on a regular basis? Does he fix your footwear for free then?
-
@benjamin-hall I've had a few years experience in this industry so here are a few points for consideration:
- Mattress comfort is completely subjective, you need to get into a showroom and try some out. If you buy purely from an online description you may get lucky but it's not worth the gamble for a big ticket item.
- Take advice from a sales bod but be aware they're likely to steer you towards whatever they're trying to shift that day, or what has better margin. Chain retailers are often affiliated with a manufacturer so they'll use the prestige brands to get you through the door then try and sell you their own junk.
- Memory foam mattresses, or sprung mattresses with memory foam / latex toppers are an acquired taste, but neither of these are cool as they tend to envelop you more.
- Mattresses are usually rated for a combined weight of 400-450 lbs, anything more than that and ymmv, you'll probably want something on the firmer side though.
- For sprung mattresses you tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality.
- Avoid anything imported from too far away, it costs to ship steel and air and you can't guarantee the quality.
- If you buy from a store don't be afraid to try and knock them down on price, especially on the more expensive items where margins are greater.
- I don't know what flammability standards manufacturers have to adhere to in the US, but this is not an area you want to scrimp in.
- If you go with a larger/more well known manufacturer they should have a better returns/replacement policy if you do have an issue.
-

I was going to recommend a girl but reading your requirements again I doubt you'll find a durable one in that price range

I was talking to a colleague who's in the process of replacing a king size. The number she quoted was $2500 or so.

@lucas1 said in Mattress Suggestions?:
@pie_flavor and @Dragoon are missing the point. Spending loads of money on a mattress won't make it magically better.
No, you're missing the point that there are typical costs for different kinds of things. @Polygeekery's comment about a mattress would be like saying he bought a great new car for $10,000. That's just a very low price for what he's talking about.
-

They are not a mattress store. They are a store that works off of smaller markups. They cater to interior decorators so their products are priced to be marked up and resold.

I last bought one a few years ago and it was about $1,000, but $2,500 wouldn't surprise me, especially for the memory foam type stuff.

Hmmm....there appears to be one near me.
-
We got a used king-size storage bed in very good condition (no odors, no significant damage) from Craigslist for $376. The bed has built-in frames to support the mattress, so no box is required, and as it's a storage bed, it can be lifted to store things underneath... very similar to this one:
Rather than getting a king-size mattress, we got two twin-size mattresses for $379.75. I think we would've spent a few hundred more if we went with memory foam or something fancy, but they're decent enough. I think the kit to make them fit a king-size bed was something like $15. A king-size mattress would've been a lot more.

You should check it out. We went to one on a whim one day and liked it. Reasonable prices. Good place to buy rugs and smaller furniture pieces.

@bjolling I wish I could, but no luck on that so far. Wives tend to also prefer working mattresses (), so I'd have to have both anyway.
-
Update: I went into a local store. For @lucas1 , the cheapest mattress they actually had on the showroom floor (not in the "you really don't want these" bin) was well over $1500. The most expensive was ~$5k, on sale. As a side note: mattress salesmen are just as pushy as used car salesmen.
Currently looking at the bed-in-a-box options.

@lorne-kates Serious question. Are you capable of speaking in a clean (non-obscene manner)? I don't think I've seen very many (if any) posts from you that didn't involve either obscenities or vulgarities (either in word choice or in subject matter). I find it very ugly and juvenile. FWIW, my teenage students speak better than you do.

Fair enough. But even most of those posts have vulgarities or obscenities (in word choice or content matter).

@benjamin-hall Could be worse. Could be boomzilla talking about masturbation 24/7 because someone said they couldn't sleep.

Really, it's just a cry for help. He has to bottle up all of his inner 13 year old's commentary IRL, because he's a repressed Canadian and not allowed to say such impolite things in public. So we're his safe space where he can let the inner 13 year old run wild.
