Silicon Valley’s $400 Juicer May Be Feeling the Squeeze

@Adynathos I'd like to see that juice kale.
-
@boomzilla I don't get this one. What are those tents?
-
@wharrgarbl
They look like fake moon landing domes to me.

@wharrgarbl Big time.

Juicero MkII?
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/juisir-zero-cleaning-maximum-juice#/
Though this one at least doesn't have the retarted
DJRM Juicero has.
-
@RaceProUK That one has a multi-use bag, so it's at least probably not a scam in the same way.
-
@Yamikuronue That, and their instructions include you supplying the fruit yourself, instead of buying bags of pulp.
Still, $525 is a bit steep for what is basically a mechanical press clad in white plastic.

That's what I mean by a re-usable bag. They also provide pre-filled bags if you don't want to bother, but the lack of do-it-yourself bag was a huge red flag for the Juicero
-
@Maciejasjmj But even Keurig has the plastic reusable cups so you can use your own grounds if you want. This is literally just a scheme for people to buy overpriced juice packets.

But the point that has been made is that if Keurig had it to do all over again they would likely put their own CRM restrictions on the cups able to be used so that compatible cups would never be sold without them getting a cut.
All of this is just entirely retarded.
-
@Polygeekery At least HP had the grace to make the printers themselves cheap.
-
@Polygeekery Hmm, you're right. Looks like they received a lot of flak -- a 23% loss in contracted brewers and accessories, no less -- for releasing a Keurig machine that would only brew Keurig-approved coffee packages. I didn't know because I've only ever used a Keurig machine at friends' houses occasionally -- the last time I was able to use one, I was still in college.
Oh well, I guess. I'd be pleased if I had an older edition Keurig machine, but I won't lose sleep over it. I usually just drink tea anyways.
@RaceProUK That one already looks miles better. They sell you empty bags and you put your own fruit in the bag. And it's not connected to the Interweb of Tyranny.
EDIT: Holy crap! After reading at their indiegogo page, get a look at this chart:
That amused me greatly. They took a direct shot at Juiciero.

But their ink didn't taste any good and was low on nutrients
-
Besides the fact that a glass/cup of juice can contain multiple fruits' worth of juice, there's also some other points mentioned here, specifically how juicing and blending affects digestive processes:

Yeah, fruit juice is unhealthy, especially if you remove the pulp (=fibers). I especially hate "health advisors" who talk about all the vitamins in juice to convince you to drink a lot of it.You know what also contains almost all the vitamins you need? French fries with ketchup! And almost everything else you eat every day, as long as your diet is not completely fucked up.
-
@asdf vitamin supplements: pills to ensure you have super expensive piss

@asdf said in Silicon Valley’s $400 Juicer May Be Feeling the Squeeze:

I mean, it's primarily water; if you're dehydrated, it's healthier than not drinking anything. It has simple sugars; if you're hypoglycemic, it's healthy for you until your blood sugar is restored. "healthy" really depends on the situation. Eating nothing but kale for a week straight isn't any healthier than drinking nothing but fruit juice, you know?
-

If I had to eat kale for a week straight it would be very unhealthy for those around me, because I would kill the bastards that are making me eat kale. FFS, it looks like a gangrenous scab and it smells like garbage when cooked.

Yeah, it's really not helpful to try and put everything into either the "healthy" or "not healthy" bucket. What's important is a balanced diet with enough of all the important nutrients and not too much of any. Unfortunately, that's harder to sell on packaging than "SUPERFOOD!!!"

Even living on a pure McDonald's diet isn't any more dangerous to your health than any other diet. Eating a sensible amount for your lifestyle, preferably combined with regular exercise, has the biggest impact on your health. The body is pretty good at adapting to the foods you eat, even if they are samey.

Unless you'e just not eating enough of something your body can't synthesise out of other basic ingredients. That's where scurvy comes in

I tell my wife that I drink Moscow Mules in order to ward off scurvy.
-
@Jaloopa I suppose I should have mentioned something about reasonably balanced diets. As extreme diets or those lacking key important bits will be bad in the long term, obviously.
@Polygeekery I did see that documentary. And I also saw the study done by actual scientists that debunked it. Which was a relief, I was worried I could not keep eating QPs and McFeasts!

@Jaloopa That juicer. It's a really great juicer. There's no better juicer. Fantastic.

Do you make them with fresh ginger, with ginger ale or with ginger beer?
-
@boomzilla But we need to make sure that people with pre-existing conditions still have access to quality, affordable juice!
-
@NedFodder We're going to build a juicer and make the cattle farmers pay for it!

Ginger beer from Australia. You can really taste the socialism.

@bb36e That is the first thing I thought of when seeing that headline.

Was reading a silly blog post from a physicist on an economist's site about housing in SF and came across this comment by a passionate guy who seems borderline crank, based on his activity in the comments, but he had this gem:
It doesn’t increase rents on existing properties, but it does increase other prices such as food, transport, entertainment, clothing, whatever. Everything you buy in SF becomes more expensive because most of the people living there are ultimately sucking money out of other people’s 401k and putting it into their own luxury goods. Eventually it’s too expensive and you move away, and THAT does increase the price of your property because you used to be paying rent-controlled prices and as soon as you move out your property goes to market rent, which is btw very very expensive.
All that works as follows:
-
Fed prints money, gives to finance industry in exchange for govt bonds they would have paid out on tens of years from now. Something like to the tune of around TWO TO FOUR TRILLION DOLLARS over the last 8 years.
-
finance industry gives to tech industry at ridiculously low interest rates
-
Tech industry builds some juice bag squeezing robots = useless work employing hundreds of computer programmers (and hookers, cocaine dealers, foosball manufacturers, you think I’m joking but I’m not)
-
Juice bag squeezing robot company is sold to BIG TECH COMPANY owned by … you guessed it your 401k
-
Now Witness the Power of this Fully Operational Battlestation… (ie. Your home town explodes)
-
Later on, your 401k implodes and you’re left holding the bill while ex-Tech company employees own all the real estate within 40 miles of anywhere desirable thanks to all the useful society improving work they’ve done (NOT).
Mean time, those who don’t have a money printing machine pay $9 for a coffee and $33 for a sandwich and $1500 for a dental cleaning that would cost $200 anywhere else, but they have to actually WORK for it.
for SF, Monetary policy is at least as big a problem as rent control / housing policy.
-
-
@boomzilla Your tax dollars hard at work creating jobs! Trickle-down economics really work
-
@boomzilla What I find weirdest is this bit:
useless work employing hundreds of computer programmers (and hookers, cocaine dealers, foosball manufacturers, you think I’m joking but I’m not)
Which can only mean he thinks foosball and prostitution should be classified as class A drugs
-

Yes, I'm confused, too, because I have no idea why you'd think that.
-
@boomzilla I think his rant makes sense. But is 401k really financing shitty startups?
-
@wharrgarbl Not directly. They certainly hold stuff like Facebook, who buy some companies for inane piles of cash. Most of the startups are funded by VCs who are playing with rich people's money hoping to win a big gamble.
I think his obsession with the Fed's interest rate policies and 401(k)s is a bit overblown, which is not to say that we won't see corrections in the market or popping bubbles in the future.
-
@boomzilla Ah, you mean the "shop" in the pic was someone photoshopping a ball pit in to make a dashcon reference?
