Zoomed in,
Result:
So clearly purely artistic and not actually functional?
-
@Tsaukpaetra The sample on https://kciter.github.io/qart.js/ seems to work.
Maybe the problem is in the way the QR is overlaid on the picture? It appears there's no white border / "quiet zone" outside the outer square marker...
EDIT: Nope, adding white borders didn't fix it.
EDIT EDIT: Opened the original and scanned that, seems that works. So the four white corners are sufficient.

Huh. Maybe the picture quality was too high in the screenshot. Although I think I blame qrdroid for treating the image like it's supposed to ONLY contain a qr code (ie like it's not using the same engine as the camera.

Speaking of something vaguely related, what's a good QR code app for Android? The one I have now sometimes pops up full-screen video ads and I don't know which, if any, of the other 8374928739 don't do that.
-
@hungrier I have QR Code Reader by Scan, and haven't seen any videos on the few times I've used it. The Play Store link doesn't mention anything about ads or in app payment, so I would think it wouldn't have any

I have QR Droid, I've never had it open long enough to display ads though.

Google Goggles - Android Apps on Google Play
I used this for a bit when it first came out but it's too much overhead to send an entire image to Google just to scan a bar code, especially when there are apps that can do it locally.
@Tsaukpaetra said in I smell a new forum plugin...:

It says it's ad-free which is a good sign, but seems to require lots of other permissions, presumably to create codes.
I'll check them out in more detail a bit later when I'm not at work
-
@hungrier said in I smell a new forum plugin...:
This one?
That's the one. Can't say much apart from it's worked for the handful of codes I've scanned and I think the description explains what permissions it needs
-
@hungrier this one is ad-free, and since there's a reference library that developers can use to make a request to it, chances are you might need to install it sooner or later...
-
@hungrier the one I have is just called "Barcode Scanner" and it was installed a long time ago back when Google Goggles or some other app required it as a dependency (not sure if it still does). Kinda finicky with QR codes. I can't get it to scan the QR code above but that may be a result of my phone's camera.
EDIT: Just noticed @sloosecannon posted it too. Well, that's two of us who can vouch for it.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Scanning it with my mk-1 eyeballs, it doesn't look legit. The alignment markers appear to use a different pixel size than the data pixels, and I cannot correctly identify the rows of timing dots connecting the alignment markers.
-
@PleegWat
Who are you gonna believe? Some website, or your lyin' eyes???

Doesn't matter. Once it identifies the alignment markers, it's not really trying to find the individual pixels. It's going by averages. (edit: or does it... I dunno. Maybe it does just take rows of evenly spaced samples.)
and I cannot correctly identify the rows of timing dots connecting the alignment markers
How about now:
-
@anotherusername Exactly: Large swathes of those lines just average to white.
-
@anotherusername It looks as if it simply turns the actual data pixels into tiny dots, and then draws them on top of the other black-and-white picture.
I suppose QR decoders only look at the exact centers of each QR "pixel"?
Incidentally, if your phone can read that code it means you could probably pack a lot more data and still be able to read it.

FWIW, my phone wouldn't scan that until I right clicked, viewed the image, and zoomed in. Then the camera was able to scan it. Although, the camera on my phone sucks... the lens is kind of scratched and/or dirty.

It does kind of look that way. Either that, or there's some pretty good shadow detection/correction built-in...
Anyway, it seems like it'd be an implementation detail.
Incidentally, if your phone can read that code it means you could probably pack a lot more data and still be able to read it.
It can also contain error correction data, so... not necessarily?

You're all doing it wrong!
My avatar has no gibberish image in it. It's a real QR code.

The generator is gone now, apparently.
This one is a more PITA version where you draw it yourself and then pray that the pixels you used don't get eaten by the QR code.
-
I was finally able to scan the original cat eye QR code with Google Goggles, so it does work, you just need a good camera.

Status: Someone asked about this
So I literally spent an hour fiddling with forum search (because Google wasn't helpful at all) to find the image generator in the OP.
Thanks WTDWTF!

NOOOOOOOOOOO
The link in the OP does NOT go to a QR code generator.

I like how Ben just has the link to a QR-code image generator on hand.
(Yes, I know he probably Googled it)

To be fair, @ben_lubar can probably generate them by hand. He just keeps that link handy for other less fortunate people.
-
@DoctorJones The link just emails the file to him and he responds with a QR code he generated by hand

It's like the second result for "QR art". Also, he posted it downthread anyways.
Like, four posts up even.

What do you guys think of this?
-
@DoctorJones
It's great! Now only thing left to do is play DF and learn Lobjam!
-
@DoctorJones I think that type has passed through here before, and many QR readers have problems with it?
-
@DoctorJones I think it doesn't work on my phone.
@PleegWat said in I smell a new forum plugin...:

My phone has coped with every other one of those in this topic, just not that one.
-
@DoctorJones You've got something on your face.
No, a little to the left.
You went too far.
Right there!
Huh, it's not coming off …
-
@abarker I think the only thing left is for you to hat my QR avatar ;-)
Bonus points if it still scans!

Mine managed to scan it. And the camera is awful, so I'm really quite surprised... I didn't even zoom in to make it bigger.
-
@anotherusername It works now. Different laptop but both retina displays with the same resolution so *shrug*

Both scan fine once I switched the the ZXing engine (It was using Zapper™ before which wasn't picking up for some reason).
What about with color?

Whether it scans fine is not the same as whether it's a real QR code. QR codes are black and white and have exactly one size of pixel, which is the same as the border width of the squares in the three corners.
If you're able to buy something using Monopoly money, that doesn't make it legal tender. It just means the person accepting it is stupid.

No, it just means that the person accepting it accepts it as legal tender. Stupidity doesn't come into play whatsoever.
