Regular Keyboard that isn't crap
-
I have moved my flat around and my Logitech usb keyboard that is actually pretty good for typing fast and accurate doesn't work too well if the room has been warm that day (the keyboard is in the sunshine) i.e. the space bar doesn't work properly because the plastic heats up.
Any suggestions other than that silly DAS keyboard?
-
@lucas1 So what happens to a keyboard when it is hot? I never tried that.
A quick solution could be to cover it with a small blanket when not using.
Or maybe get the same model you are using but in white?
-
@Adynathos I can't be arsed to cover it with a blanket, it is just something I connect to USB connector on the back of the PC and forget about.
It should just work. Everything is fine other than the space bar and that is working now that it is cold. It can't get warmer than 30 degrees because we are in the UK.

@lucas1
I can honestly say I would recommend a modern "gaming keyboard" for even standard work by people who type professionally. In general, your cost range would be around US$100, but I find the mechanical switches do give a different and better response / performance profile than the little chiclets on cheap keyboards. More importantly, the keys are designed to be removable, so when the keyboard starts building up hair, food, or other gunk, you can remove the keys to clean the keyboard (some of these keyboards are actually dishwasher safe-ish, though I haven't wound up with actual liquids in mine, so a simple application of canned air has been sufficient for me).The first generation, you were stuck with loud keyboards, but now there's a pretty good cross-section of selection of the various types of Cherry switches. If you want help deciding between the different types, let me know and I can do some more looking things up after work.

well the Daskeyboard 4 Pro with a set of white key caps would work.
or.... well just about any other keyboard with white (or at least significantly not black) keys....
hell, done carefully a can of spraypaint will fix that colour issue.
-
I think I am going to use a knife and a file on the current keyboard
-
I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 4000 at work. I'm sure there's a model up somewhere, since this one is old.
On the other hand-- it's at least 5 years old. I've been pounding it non-stop for 2.5 years here (). I do both document / word processing and coding, so it works great for both.
Good keys, quiet without being silent, ego, distinct keypad, and multi-media keys. Backslash, ctrl and other keys are sanely laid out.
You'll need to check local listings, obviously, but here's one from the US:
-
@Lorne-Kates Yeah I won't be using that shite. I want a regular EN-GB keyboard with something fairly decent.
This logitech is fine as long as it doesn't get warm.

That is the absolute stupidest reason I've ever heard for a keyboard not to work-- and you're calling other hardware shit?
-
@lucas1 said in Regular Keyboard that isn't crap:

Try the same/similar model in white then :)
-
I recommend a $15 Microsoft keyboard. With volume and calculator keys!
-
@Lorne-Kates The keyboard you recommended was bent literally in design. It was curved.
I wanted a regular keyboard, which the keys are in a regular Qwerty grid thing. I just want something that isn't £200 and for hipsters that like the DAS keyboard, I just want something that the space bar doesn't stop working because it got a bit warm in my office. I also don't want to spend a fortune.
-
@anonymous234 I might just buy 10 and throw them away whenever. :D
-

It's called an ergonomic keyboard. They've been around-- and fairly standard-- since 1990.
If you want a $10 piece of shit keyboard, then go to the discount bin and buy a $10 piece of shit keyboard.
If you want a keyboard that isn't, and I quote "crap", then buy a keyboard that isn't crap.
-
@Lorne-Kates Just because something isn't an "ergonomic" keyboard doesn't mean it is crap.
Stop being a dickhead.
I was asking about a reasonably priced keyboard that wasn't crap. I dunno what your mental retardation is on this issue.
I just want suggestions on a regular keyboard that isn't complete shite.

Yup. Since 1990, the number of people using them has held steady at a pretty standard value of "epsilon"

Don't throw them away, just swap them when they get too hot
-
@TimeBandit Maybe the energy can be recycled into ...... strippers!

A $10 keyboard that stops working when the room is hot is crap.
@lucas1 said in Regular Keyboard that isn't crap:

You never said "reasonably priced". You said "isn't crap".
Sorry, I thought you were looking for a real keyboard to do actual work on, rather than just dicking around in your apartment. My assumption was that you were a professional looking for a professional tool.
So again, $10 crap keyboard it is. Hopefully it will be some key other than spacebar that fucks up due to stupid reasons.
-
@lucas1 said in Regular Keyboard that isn't crap:

Sure it does
But honestly, the MS4000 is the only keyboard I've found so far that I can comfortably type on all day. But fuck the wireless one - that was a piece of shit. Much happier with the wired version.

I am a professional working on professional tools. I've been using $10 crap keyboards throughout my career. I've never had any problem with them modulo reasonable quality expectations from cheap crap; I end up replacing them once every couple years or so, which works out to about $5/year amortized so I don't mind going through them relatively quickly.
I spend the big bucks on powerful hardware and specialized software. (ie. professional tools.) Keyboards are expected to Just Work, even the basic models.

Yes but you presented something that was obviously shite. An ergnomic keyboard.

You've been brainwashed to think that. Do you know nothing about human biology?

Dammit Jim, I'm a programmer, not a doctor!

Why do you assume he's human?
filed under: Microaggression is

@Lorne-Kates Yes I know a lot about human biology. I used to fight other men in cages at university for fun. I could trap and grab people depending on what they expose via movements and style.
Ergonomic keyboards are bullshit and nothing to do with ergonomics or biology.

That still doesn't explain why your keyboard stops working when it's warm.

Cite?

I feel like this is actually a situation where you can actually prove a mechanical keyboard will work better - I bet the rubber dome things are acting up cause they're getting too hot.
-

Yeah, this. While I personally prefer a gaming/mechanical keyboard, I know ergonomic keyboards do help with things like "don't get carpal tunnel" and stuff.

I can cite a direct counter to that - me. My wrists hurt if I work for too long on a non-ergo keyboard! Yeah, I'm old, get off my lawn, etc, etc, etc.
-
@Lorne-Kates It really only stops working when I am moist for you :D
-
@lucas1 said in Regular Keyboard that isn't crap:

If you're moist, then my job is already done.
-
Isn't he that guy from Dr. Horrible who looks like Adam Sandler but wasn't played by Adam Sandler?
-
@Lorne-Kates Depends how water repellent. You tend to be digusting at any level of "moist"

I just type weirdly. Forget that home-row nose!
My hands are positioned the same as they would be on an ergonomic keyboard. If I pressed down my fingers without adjustment, I'd get
aerg nuop
.Am I ?

I'm glad you like it; I personally can't stand using bendy keyboards. I've been using a Model M since the early 90s, which isn't completely non-ergonomic but is probably not on the National Carpal Tunnel Association's Top Ten list of keyboard choices. :)
@lucas1, I'd second the recommendation to look at a keyboard with mechanical switches. If you've got a halfway decent computer store nearby it'd be worth stopping in to bash on some keyboards for a while to try out the different types of switches available.
-
@Parody Ooh! Another emoji!

I use a $200 ergonomic keyboard. Yes, I'm a special snowflake.
