As a straight male, I find the entire concept repulsive on an instinctual level. Whether the guy is Orlando Bloom or a crazy homeless guy living in the dumpster, it's pretty much the same kind of "ew, gross" feeling.
That makes sense without the preceding "As a straight male", because I'd imagine (in fact I know) that's not an instinctual repulsion for all straight males.
I'd imagine gay men feel similarly about women.
Not really. I know some guys who claim repulsion but they're outliers in... a lot of ways. I think most gay men (including myself) have pretty much the same opinion as Fox, it sounds like. It's not gross at all, it's just not interesting. Which kind of lends itself to the idea that it's society shaping that reaction and not anything instinctual. Guessing you just used the wrong word there.
I swear I don't remember us veering this wildly off topic even on CS, but I suspect that's false memory at play there.

How do you know that a discussion about my sexual preferences is off-topic in a thread about Transformers?

I've thought that, too, but I have yet to be able to prove it satisfactorily.

Repulsive, though? Really? Not just "not for me" but on the same level as vomiting? What about women having sex with women?
Sexuality is weird. Gender is weird too. Sometimes I feel like being a genderqueer bisexual makes me a complete alien to the rest of humanity.
-

Well, not straight out puking, more like... Imagine eating food you really don't like. Makes you twitch a bit, doesn't it? Its kinda the same for me, except instead of spinach, it's penis.
I don't mind lesbian sex, it's not the homosexuality that does it for me, it's just that male bodies are innately rather gross.
-
@Maciejasjmj That's just so weird to me. I mean, like, let's say I'm looking at a woman with grotesquely huge knockers, like Porn Star surgically-enhanced boobs. That doesn't interest me. It looks weird, I end up distracted by the old "surgery or photoshop" game, and end up passing. But if you held a gun to my head and said "fuck this woman", I'd do my best and probably manage to get off. It's not like, disgusting, just not my thing.
But then, I find cheese repulsive, but if it's mild enough I'll eat it instead of returning my burger if it ended up there. So maybe that's a bad metric for me?
-
@Maciejasjmj I've kissed a guy. Physically, the only real difference with kissing a girl was the stubble. I felt a little bit uncomfortable in the same way as you might when kissing a girl you don't fancy at all.
I suspect I'd have the same problem with sex. Not repulsed, but with nothing there that's appealing it's not going to be a fun experience.

Ew.

Physically there's no difference between reading Stephen King and Stephanie Meyer - you hold paper to your eyes and flip pages. And yet one makes you interested, and the other makes you want to gouge your eyes out.

I'm thinking more "kissing a close family member". Physically probably the same, but still ew more than just "a random girl not your type".

seems you're further over to the hetero side than me. Not that there's anything wrong with that
-
@Jaloopa My husband and I were debating whether that's just "more heterosexual" or "mild homophobia layered over the usual amount of heterosexuality". I keep thinking it's just that the extreme ends of each side of the scale can't empathise with the other end, but he was saying a lack of empathy is due to our society being so polarized culturally and in a vacuum even extreme heterosexuals wouldn't be repulsed so much as turned off. But @Maciejasjmj has nothing against lesbians, which seems to me like it's more just being the extreme end of heterosexuality.
Which is all academic, of course; I'm not saying anyone in this thread is out of line or anything like that, but all of this fascinates me. People are weird :D Hopefully nobody's offended by this, I'm sorry in advance if I worded this post clumsily.
-
@Yamikuronue It's an interesting argument and culture has to have a massive effect on how existing biases manifest.
Evidence that it's two orthogonal axes would include people who gay bash and call for prayer therapy and the like, but are secretly having a lot of gay sex. "Lesbian > gay male" opinions could be more extreme heterosexuality or the fact that there's generally more acceptance of lesbians and some level of assumption (among some people at least) that it's a phase some women go through or that lesbians are just waiting for a man to come in and complete the threesome.
As with most things, it's probably a mixture, or to quote Ben Goldacre, I think you'll find it's a lot more complicated
-
@Fox said in a whole lotta nothing, only $5:

Yeah, it's hard to prove the subtle effects our society has on us... because of those very same effects. Observer effect, subject bias, or some such? It's been a long time since I've taken any research classes.

Yeah, lesbian sex just does absolutely nothing for me, which was a pretty good indicator at a young age. (Hearing straight men rant and rave about it and being just, 'Really??')

When discussing human behavior, this is almost always the proper answer.

I'm also, though, not going to let him pull his slanderous escalation bit where he says "why don't you just say I'm a stupid dumbhead moron that's stupider than the stupidest other person in the world like everyone does", because nobody actually does that.
Nah, I call him on that when he acts like an illiterate retard.

speech impediment
He could've said something the very first time I brought it up. I always thought it was one of those "I don't know how to pronounce the word" like how the President one called someone a corpseman, or my grade school friend who pronounced "navajo" as "na-va-gee-oh".
I think he lives too close to Canada and has picked up some of their mannerisms.

Ditto, actually. But @Maciejasjmj pretty well described my reaction to dude on dude action. Learned? Innate? No clue, but why not Born This Way?
-
@boomzilla That's wired in a pretty basic level of our brains. But I don't need to look or even think about it. It's not worse than seeing someone eating radish.

awesome, I return here, post a topic and this place has run out of topics to derail so my topic ends up being one of the largest and weirdest derails in a while.
have a random rant to interrupt your derail:
- 05:37 - NTAuthority - ... and nodebb's infiniscroll mode is actually broken! do none of you even keep it set to this so you can rant about it being broken? - 05:37 - NTAuthority - that was one advantage discourse had
(also wtf is up with this shit's parser, discodown was weird but this is literally broken, like every other 'pure' markdown impl)

@NTAuthority horizontal scroll suck on mobile, I give up trying to read your rant about infiniscroll

scrolling and scrolling still are pretty much covariant
-
@NTAuthority scrolling is one of those issues that is still an open problem in computer science, maybe some day we'll have a breakthrough but right now it seems like it's impossible to get right
-
@bb36e just removing the scroll to show the menu on mobile would help a lot. There is already a button for showing it, the slide thing is just javascript wankery.
