@Gąska You still need to see the symbol on the keyboard to be able to type it?

@dkf for characters I use less than 0.0000001% of time, yes.

@Gąska (a) , Polish keyboards must have a million letters or something. (b) And then you hunt around for it, and then you find it, and then now you know where it is. Same with searching wincompose sequences.

I got back into TF2 recently. The bad news is there's a lot of cheaters. The good news is... they don't seem to try to hide it. They all play as Sniper, have no avatar, copy someone else's name, and blatantly go around aimbotting (I actually had to set a Steam avatar so I wouldn't be mistaken for them). Many seem to "clear the chat" by immediately sending a bunch of blank lines whenever anyone says "cheating". Which of course makes them even more obvious once you figure what's going on.
This means, since you can votekick users out they all get kicked from the game within a few minutes. So I can't understand what kind of super fun experience they're getting, 3 minutes of watching an aimbot shoot for you, then get kicked out, join another game, repeat. I'm going to assume these are literally 9 year old children that shared their cheats in school and have nothing better to do.
Of course, it's possible that I only notice the obvious cheaters and not the subtle ones, but I didn't see anyone that was "suspicious" but not obvious.

Here's the most common Polish keyboard layout, found in over 99% of computers (with very minor variation in key shapes, and backslash is sometimes on home row instead):
(b) And then you hunt around for it, and then you find it, and then now you know where it is. Same with searching wincompose sequences.
No, opening web browser and navigating several sites (at least 2, often more) is not at all the same as just looking at your keyboard and reading labels. And at the point I have to open browser anyway, I might google for the character itself and copy-paste it instead.

Okay, so yet another always-running 3rd party program. Do you think it's a good tradeoffs to force coworkers/contributors to install yet another always-running 3rd party program just so they don't kill themselves while working with your code, just so you can use abstract graphical symbols in place of actual words?
-
@Gąska Oh, if it's emojis you're after, you can get those with Win+period.
Unless by 'abstract graphical symbols' you mean plain text letters.

so using emoji for function names is still a-ok, yeah?
If it describes the code well, why not.

I'm partial to U+1F595 myself. But java doesn't allow emoji shenanigans, or any unicode shenanigans really, in function names.

How many character-typing keys with non-ASCII symbols do you see?
In my case, with this keyboard: nine.
«»£§çǺª
Not sure if you consider all the accented vowels under this definition, since they require one more extra key.

even if you manage to hunt down that П, it might not be the ㄇ you're looking for.

If you include Tab (it has both a rightward and a leftward arrow symbol on it), 13. If you include the numpad, 16. (The 8462 keys type characters but also have arrow symbols on them. )

If you include Tab (it has both a rightward and a leftward arrow symbol on it), 13.
Tab is in ASCII though. If you were to include Tab you'd have to include Enter as well.

How does it even look like? Is there a small digit next to a big digit?

The fact that .NET still has no built-in function to generate random strings, and other random stuff, is bizarre.
Forget random strings. It took them until Core 2.1 to make a function for proper instance hashcode generation!
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF Bites:
supposed to be a problem.
This is going to be a "We haven't generated the thing you're talking about" problem, isn't it? Because running the build again it's not there.
I'm curious if it's actually a problem with the finished build (with the error in it), but since it's a production build (and I really don't want to fudge my hosts file to pretend I'm production again) I kinda don't want to test it....
Running the build again, to be safe!
-
@Carnage Well, using Lunix would explain why Win+period wouldn't work. As for governmentbox, should work just fine.
-
@levicki said in WTF Bites:
Why the can't it format the error object so you can see what is going on?
Don't you know that nobody reads error messages?
When they are the only way to find out what the went wrong, somebody does.
-
makes heavy use of System.IO.Path.GetRandomFileName() to generate random strings
The bigger fun with that approach is: the file system gets filled with empty files - because that function also creates that file!
-
@pie_flavor said in WTF Bites:

Except for the fact that unsigned third-party applications are most likely verboten (or must be approved by IT and management with a request that's submitted in triplicate to each member of each team) on that machine.
-
@djls45 The Win key + . shortcut is a recent Windows 10 feature which doesn't need a third-party app, like @pie_flavor implied.

It's funny how the fronts are divided on this. I'm not going to allow any non-Latin letters in identifiers (comments are different), neither Polish nor German. And keep the symbol crap in APL (or LaTeX) where it belongs.

The one in the picture is a bit shitty, my actual keyboard has the 2 aligned with the top of the 2 instead of the bottom, so it actually looks like what it does.

Funny you mention it - I've never seen those symbols written in LaTeX using anything else than plain ASCII functions.
