Discussion of NodeBB Updates

@wharrgarbl no, for the same reason that "all these companies are successful, providing you look at only the 500 companies on the Fortune 500".
I take your point but it doesn't matter: you cannot cherry pick the data to argue your case.
Even if we look at things like Packagist (PHP's idea of npm, only sane), I went through a number of the random and popular package lists and all of them outside of the big projects (e.g. Symfony) look to be stuff people do in their own time. Even stuff built for a company and later made available is not so obviously common.

@arantor said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:
However, most OSS projects don't do this.
The ones that are actually good software (web browsers) do. Chrome's bankrolled by Google search, Firefox is/was bankrolled by Yahoo/Bing (not 100% sure they still are).
Discourse has the same development model as NodeBB: you pay us to host it, but also if you contribute code we don't pay you shit.
Ubuntu has some kind of deal with Dell, although I don't know the details. Redhat charges "support" costs. Etc.
Linux itself has labor donated by dozens of companies, I know Google's a large part of it. Not exactly the same thing as direct pay, but then again, Linus is a multi-millionaire and that money came from fucking somewhere.
There's only a few counter-examples I can think of: Audacity, GIMP, Blender.
But yes, the majority of open source projects are unpaid because they're tiny and nobody uses them for anything ever. So I guess you're technically correct.

So far you haven't provided any data at all to cherry-pick from. I think that's the fundamental complaint here. You made an assertion, you did not back it up with data when prodded. You can't just say "well I assume it's true" and keep going as if nobody asked you to back it up.
EDIT: of course this whole side debate isn't relevant, because NodeBB does have income and yet is still shitty.

Just because people take pride in their work and do their best doesn't mean they're infallible.
They haven't even fixed the very first bug I saw in this piece of crap.
I'll accept that as a fact.
- There's a little strawman shamelessly shitting out broken products.
- There's a second strawman saying shamelessly shitting out broken products is wrong.
- There's a third strawman pointing and laughing at the second strawman.
We have every right to insult the first and third strawmen and agree with the second strawman.
- There's a fourth strawman doing their best to put out a decent product, solving bugs as they come along to the best of their ability.
- There's a fifth strawman (correctly) saying shamelessly shitting out broken products is wrong.
The fifth strawman then points a finger at the fourth strawman. - There's a sixth strawman pointing and laughing at the fifth strawman for saying one should take pride in their work.
The fifth strawman needs to calm down and be mindful whom they throw their accusations at.
The sixth strawman is an asshole, no better than the third strawman.
- There's a seventh strawman who says "yeah, one should take pride in their work, I don't know if that's the case with Strawman Eight though, they seemed to have solved this bug pretty quickly"
- A ninth strawman says "no, they suck, they haven't even solved the first bug I saw"
Strawman Seven should probably investigate further before forming an informed opinion.
Or maybe go do something more useful with their life.Heh, strawmen... screw them.

On another subject: I really hate NodeBB's notifications. I've hated it for a long time.
I think it's gotten worse recently.
-
@zecc Strawman #4 is just strawman #1 described in a more positive light. They don't do any type of serious testing on their product.
But TRWTF is we using their development branch in our forum. I suppose most of us didn't sign up to be free testers for nodebb.

@wharrgarbl said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

I don't mind it.
That time @RaceProUK went too far playing with a bug and broke the forum was fun, and there's a long history going back to CS with Signature Guy and the image that logged out anyone who loaded it
-
@zecc What do you hate about them? Is it how clicking on the popup toaster doesn't mark the notification as read? Is it how the notification list only shows a seemingly random handful of unread ones, mixed in with read, if you have more than 5?
-
@jaloopa said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

I'm glad people saw the funny side: I don't mind admitting I was a little panicked when I did that
Did you also get hit by my
fa-spin
the next day?
-
@zecc was one of the strawmen three pieces of straw narrower than the others?
-
@raceprouk said in Discussion of NodeBB Updates:

No, I must have missed that.
But when it comes down to it, this is a forum for wasting time on so breakages aren't anything more than a minor annoyance that you need to do some work instead. It doesn't take much amusement value to override that, and there are some pretty inventive people here
-
@raceprouk these were fun, but sticky title wasn't

Keep mocking people that report bugs, and someday they'll accept you back at meta.discourse
-

Have you ever visited the
/notifications
pages, accessible via "See all notifications"? It's... not good.Even if you haven't, the merging of notifications leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least.
-
@zecc my favourite is the lack of any sort of columns in the notification text, leading to things like this
Oh, so Boomzilla was a fan of that 10m post
-
@jaloopa a 10 meters post wouldn't fit nicely in columns anyway

What he is mocking was not a bug. It was nitpicking.
-
@zecc You totally lost me about 2 bullet points in.

Something something "I wouldn't touch it with a 10m post".

Does it crop on mobile?

@ben_lubar Sorry, I don't have time to fix and test this. Why don't you move the code from my plugin to the official wtdwtf customizations plugin, apply the fix there, then turn off my plugin.
-
I've got an update ready, but I want to test it on a recent backup of the database and it's been restoring indexes for like 5 hours now. 77% of the way there!

GG Chrome Dev tools, can't tell a minified file from a PNG...
-
@boomzilla On Opera, opening the image in a new tab and reloading isn't enough. It showed the new version in that tab, but the forum still had the old one, even after refreshing. I had to do a shift+F5 to get the updated one.
Maybe opening the emoji selector and downloading all 3500 of em would have done it.
-
Was there another update since the wisdom teeth one? I got the "forum updated" toaster yesterday and again today on my work computer.

Oh I just noticed, in quote it seems to work just fine. Because CSS.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Sounds like a bug, not sure if it's tdwtf specific If you can repro on try.nodebb.org can you issue it please?
Bonus points if you link to the topic on try.nodebb.org and someone in the issue says "that topic isn't there anymore" because the forum gets wiped every day at 5pm
