@Yamikuronue Is it one of the ones with shoulder-high partitions, so that what you see if you look up from your desk while people walk about is just a bunch of floating heads?
I couldn't unsee that after noticing it for the first time.
-
@CarrieVS said in Recruiting Giants:
Do cubicle farms even still exist?
AFAICT, they've never really been a thing in the UK. All of my IT workplaces have been basically open plan
-
@flabdablet No, but I hear they might put them in the new building they're planning.
Mine are tall enough that while a taller coworker could see over the top to see if someone's in his cube, I have to go on tippy-toes.
-
@Vaire said in Recruiting Giants:
Feel free to outsource my position to whatever country they are outsourcing to now. You let me know how that works out for you, quality-wise
I resent this assumption that we're all incompetent morons outside the USA.

Heightism!
I didn't knew it existed till I interviewed in a place were everyone was ridiculously tall. And it was a softwarehouse, not a basket team.
I guess the HR girls there like tall men.
-
@Jaloopa said in Recruiting Giants:

There was a fashion for them, but they've been out for quite a while now. Probably because the big partitions cost more to hire…

Yep, sitting in one right now. It's rather nice, honestly, high walls with plexi in the top. I can see through it just fine since I'm tall, but they are high enough that you pretty much avoid the floating head problem. There are shorter ones in the rest of the building, though, and I don't think I'd like those as much.
Some people have even managed to take out dividers between cubicles to expand two cubicles into one uber cubical.
-
@nullptr Well apparently I'm never going to get to work in one. I hate all you Americans.

We're talking mammalian mice here, right?
I don't think so. When you push a mammalian mouse around in the right fashion, a biology or medicine research article usually happens as a result.
Have to agree w/ @wft on this one. Empirical testing shows mammalian mice are not optimal:

The guy's own daughter wrote an article in response to her father's stuff:
As his toxic waste trash fire not only is associated with my last name but also my face, I felt compelled to respond to my father’s sexist, ableist, and racist rants.
-
-
@bb36e He's not wrong "about women in tech". He's just plainly wrong, simple as that. A dumbfuckery scale 100/100. But apparently, that's not a very daughterly thing to say about her own dad.
-
So first, daddy writes a stupid rant on the internet. Then, his daughter comes, completely shits on him in the name of virtue signaling and preserving her SJW cred, and proceeds to write yet another stupid rant on the internet where she desperately tries to turn the original one into a gender/race/"ableism" issue.
That whole family sounds horrible. I wonder if they get together on Thanksgiving or Christmas - it must look like a real life sitcom if they do.

Same here too. In fact this is very common workplace configuration, and therefore I think headset that showing "you don't want to be disturbed" is a requirement widget these days.

I wouldn't label her a SJW. Her post contained too much nuance to do so.

'SJW' has an actual definition? I figured it just meant "Liberals I don't like", given the way it's used around here, which for many is already about three words longer than it needs to be.

Stop that nonsense right now! SJWs aren't real. They're a fairy stole made up to scare Catholics much like women in tech.
-
@Adynathos Really? You will never buy a device that connects to a server outside your LAN?
This 'policy' means you won't ever be able to take advantage of third-party data sources, feeds, content or APIs. While you do that, and spend months attempting to reverse engineer some gizmo, I and the millions of other sensible human beings are going to enjoy the advantages of technology making their lives simpler.

Comments are pure gold:
erinn:
Man, I love a good NO GUTS NO GLORY pep talk. It reminds me of all the awesome "Rocky" movies, or maybe "Hoosiers". I love the underdog who works really hard and sacrifices everything for something he or she believes in -- especially if that thing is immortality, rather than quality of life. The person who says to themselves: I don't personally want to enjoy living -- I want people, after I'm dead, to look through the very long list of minor programmers who wrote lines of contentious PHP for Facebook and say "That. That person existed. That was one of the countless thousands of people in Silicon Valley who owned 200 clever tshirts from Threadless, had strong opinions about CSAs and REST, and participated in Movember every single year without fail."Seriously. I can understand an earnest and ardent desire to do something important and meaningful with your life, but the idea that by merely existing in the SV software ecosystem as some kind of slave to a GRAND VISIONARY, you are "part of history" in a positive way strikes me as, for lack of a better word, goofy. Natural disasters are part of history too, and they suck. Who wants to be involved in one of those
-
@wft I find it interesting how they mention “PHP for Facebook” and “natural disasters” in the same comment…

@blek said in Recruiting Giants:

Her father did directly insult women, and the daughter's response was surprisingly unemotional. I find it concerning that you label her reponse as "SJW", a derogatory term, when it was actually warranted in this case. You're not any better than St. Douchebag.

This 'policy' means you won't ever be able to take advantage of third-party data sources, feeds, content or APIsThe policy is for simple appliances, home automation like light switches, heat controllers, washing machines - things which have no justified reason to connect outside or talk to anyone but me.
And if I wanted to control them from outside, I would connect to my own server, which would relay the command to the devices in the LAN.Obviously I would connect the devices whose purpose is to consume outside content and APIs - as demonstrated by the fact that I post here using an internet-connected computer.
After all, these devices are not very important, they are mostly gadgets for our entertainment. You have fun when the machines satisfy your needs without you even asking, I have fun when I build and control my system.

Really? You're still capable of being dismayed by the utterly predictable behavior of the right-wing culture-wars contingent here?
Personally I find it easier just to write them off as pig-ignorant, malicious, willfully ill-informed little boys playing at being men. But maybe that's just me.
-
@flabdablet said in Recruiting Giants:
But maybe that's just me.
Yes, because despite being a liberal left-winger, I don't like to dismiss the other political side when they have a point. And some of the SJW criticism is absolutely valid.
In this case, however, the term was just used to insult someone with whose style of writing they disagree.
-
@asdf said in Recruiting Giants:

Only if you give the writer the benefit of far, far more doubt than they show any evidence at all of being willing to extend to anybody outside their own social sphere ever. I don't think I've ever seen a complaint about SJWs from anybody who uses the term both pejoratively and non-ironically that doesn't amount to whining about mountains where there are at best molehills.
-
@flabdablet said in Recruiting Giants:
culture-wars
BTW: The only way to "win" a culture war is to compromise: Acknowledge the points the other side has and then discredit the lunatics who spew extremist bullshit all day and mix it with valid arguments to make it agreeable.
-

I mean, they're no Trump, but...

That term is so widespread now, it's not going to go away. Embrace it, use it to distance yourself from actual idiots in your own political camp and it will extinguish itself eventually. ;)

@asdf Honestly, I don't mind the term so much -- I've seen some real massive idiots that properly deserve it, and while I don't think "social justice" as a concept should be reduce to ridicule and nothing more, that horse is so far out of the barn he can't even see the barn anymore. So meh.
But this forum is incredibly hostile toward any hint of liberalism, anti-racism, or LGBT rights, thanks in no small part to Bra Fox's belligerent crusading, and it's been bothering me for a while. I feel like if I open my damn mouth about politics I'll be ridiculed mercilessly.
-
@Yamikuronue said in Recruiting Giants:

…and I think it's necessary to call them out and publicly ridicule them. That's exactly why I started to use the term SJW as well, for the actual idiots. Nothing hurts your argument more than idiots in your own political camp.
@Yamikuronue said in Recruiting Giants:

Which is exactly why we need to distance ourselves from authoritarian ideologists who claim to be "liberal". Especially from those who like character assassinations.

There are some people here that I really disagree with a lot politically. However, they're fine when they're talking about technical stuff, so I put up with them. People might wish to try guessing who I'm talking about; I will try to neither confirm nor deny what they believe. :)
-
@dkf said in Recruiting Giants:
However, they're fine when they're talking about technical stuff
Okay, so you're not talking about @Fox
Side note: I discovered that a lot of people I disagree with politically, both here and IRL, are way better discussion partners when it comes to politics than most people from my own political camp, who just talk in platitudes all day. A sensible left-wing political agenda necessarily has to be complex and cannot be reduced to phrases, every attempt to do so just makes you sound stupid.
-
@asdf said in Recruiting Giants:
Okay, so you're not talking about @Fox
You should listen to what he says more carefully. He's about right about 80% of the time. It's just that he's passionately stupidly wrong about the other 20%… (WARNING: Figures are not scientifically determined, but rather are values I just took a WAG at.)
-
@dkf said in Recruiting Giants:
He's about right about 80% of the time.
If you go by post count, that number is way too high. His shouting matches with @Polygeekery make up for at least 50% of his posts. Yes, I read your disclaimer.
It's just that he's passionately stupidly wrong about the other 20%
Yes, and any attempt to tell him that he is going too far ideologically has failed.
-
@asdf said in Recruiting Giants:

I was going by topic. Nobody's got time to count up all those posts in those silly shouting matches.
-
@Yamikuronue said in Recruiting Giants:

It was incredibly hostile to all of those things well before @Fox got here. All he's done is annoy some of the existing wingnuts enough to make them out themselves explicitly. I have trouble believing he's actually pushed anybody further into a belief system they didn't already hold.
Yes, you do get ridiculed mercilessly for expressing anything even vaguely left here. You also get accused of "bullying and shaming" for objecting to that ridicule. None of that is @Fox's fault. He's not a tenth as obnoxious as those who reflexively heap scorn on everything he says.
-
@flabdablet said in Recruiting Giants:
. I have trouble believing he's actually pushed anybody further into a belief system they didn't already hold.
That's not what I meant at all. It's more that he kicked the hornet's nest and now there's hornet patrols combing the fields protecting the nest from other would-be kickers. Or something.
-
@Yamikuronue said in Recruiting Giants:

Well, they're trying.
None of them actually has a sting worth a pinch of shit, but yes, they're trying.

He reminds me of anti-smoking ad campaigns, that are so condescending and horrible that you have to wonder if they aren't secretly funded by the cig companies to encourage smoking out of spite.
But in all seriousness, Bra Fox hasn't changed my opinion on social issues one bit. Which is hilarious, because for the most part I would be on his side. Well, technically, I'd be on the side he's arguing for, not HIS side. But since he opened his arguments by libelously calling everyone here murderers-- he kinda incinerated that support bridge. I think it was said by Sun "Machiavelli" Bonaparte, "Don't be a fucking spazz douche to your allies"
