Newest Cooties

I think we're having Cooties again. Could it be that forums are hard?
-
-
Now's when we discover Discourse was innocent all along and the cooties come from somewhere else.
Alex is going to have to send Jeff an apology letter.
-
NodeBB is still much snappier than Discourse when not experiencing cooties.
-
@LB_ WHen it's working well, it is very much a case of "Now to wa- oh, it's loaded already" :)
-
And the damn notifications are also busted now.
-
Yeah they are. It's irritating for Mafia.
-
@anonymous234 Notifications are intentionally disabled because they were causing cooties: https://github.com/apapadimoulis/what-bugs/issues/66#issuecomment-203088486

Feature request: Notifications no longer show a fscking toaster!
I can see there are notifications dimwit-NodeBB, they're there on the bell icon!

You should have put a warning alert.
I submitted a bug for nothing.
-
I thought that used to be an option at some point...it should be...

Nope! But you can make it twice as annoying by enabling notification sounds!
Apparently NodeBB was designed for slower forums?

No forum software was designed for the abuse we give it.

They eyelet button doesn't work for you?
-
@Tsaukpaetra It keeps saying "You have no notifications" although the notification counter states differently. I could imagine Ben did it to conserve resources, but it's annoying.
EDIT: it says no new ones.
-
@JBert He only disabled the code that returns the list of notifications because that's what was causing the cooties. I suppose we could bug him to disable the counter too...
-
@LB_ or you could just clear them by clicking "Mark all notifications as read"... but then you'd never know what they are later when (if) it's fixed!
-
@darkmatter
I believe that if the notification was someone replying to you and/or mentioning you, it clears itself when you read the reply.
if it's someone upvoting you, there doesn't appear to be a way to clear it other than "mark all as read". (tested by the fact that I can not get this mothereffing notification from @LB_ upvoting that last post to go away)

@Tsaukpaetra A new post is available in this thread! Continue reading to see it.

Toasters in general as a UI element on web pages need to die in a fire.
-
So what's the deal? About 2/3rds of the time I can't get this site to load anymore. Are we hosting from a Pentium Pro and 26k modem?

More likely @accailica's raspberry pi
-
@mott555 Maybe we're getting the content on the pages by bittorrent behind scenes? o_O

It was then that we learned the cooties were coming from inside the house...

The performance is cootietastic...

@ben_lubar, it may just be a coincidence, but every time I try to search, cootie storms break out...

Oi! my pi's faster than that!
people seriously underestimate the performance you get out of a raspberry pi. for such tiny boards they are remarkable powerhouses and phenomenal bang for your buck.

It feels to me like opening the topic list is much slower than opening a topic.
-
@PleegWat It's not consistent for me. Sometimes it's like a second o oload the topic list and then minutes to load the topic, sometimes the other way around.
IOW it's fucked.
-
@accalia Still, you might try upgrading us to a 2
Seriously though, @ben_lubar, I would really like to have notifications back. Also, I've noticed that hitting /unread seems to cause mild cooties. Or I have bad timing this morning.

Haha.
Faster than expected? Sure. Powerhouses? No.I think the Pi 3 is supposed to be as powerful as some late P3's or early P4's, with GPU performance on par with the original Xbox. For the size and price, I'd call it a powerhouse. Pi's are replacing portable projects I used to use Atom-based netbooks for, with a lot more horsepower and a much lower price tag too.
Also, since this is the cooties thread, this is about the third successful page load I've had all morning.

-
FYI, there is more information on what is happening in the moar cooties thread, and Ticket 66 on Giggity hub.

I'd not call that a powerhouse in 2016, irregardless of the price.
-
@flabdablet At least they're not talking toasters yet.

That would actually make it fast and immune to outages, if implemented properly. With the tiny downside that you'd have to pretty much download the entire forum.

...a powerhouse that only eats five watts.
