Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems
-
I particularly like how, when scrolling on mobile, I'm suddenly sent down 10 posts because it had to load, making me have to scroll back up to find the post I was actually reading. I'm on Windows Phone though, so people tend not to care.
Also, before posting this I just randomly got kicked back to the list of posts, and when I pressed "back" I returned here, with the thing asking me if I wanted to discard the post. At least it saved my text. (happened again here, so I'm starting at syndromes post but I can still type. Can't see what, though, but words are happening as blakey said)

This is made even better by the fact that it can take as many as four tries to look at your notifications on mobile.

How and why are they blockading the reference sites?

@Fox you have no idea how long it took me to even be able to post that.
We got rid of discourse, but at what cost? D:
I can't even select text because where I touch is not where I think I'm touching and all sorts of undesired things start happening.

Unwanted touching! Unwanted touching! Get away, you pervert!

you just walk up to random people on the street and say, "hey, you should really try to stop smoking, it's bad for your lungs?"
No, but if the random person complained to me about a persistent cough, I might offer that advice even if he/she didn't explicitly ask for advice.
Some people complain just to vent, but most of us are problem solvers by nature, and we tend to respond to problems by trying to solve them. When someone complains of a problem, we tend to assume that solving the problem will make them happier, and if we have knowledge that might help solve it, we share that knowledge, even if the complainer didn't explicitly ask for it, because that's the way our minds work.
When you complain to us about a problem, especially one that we have the ability to help solve, that is perceived by most of us as an implicit request for help. Thus, we don't see our advice as being unsolicited.

@HardwareGeek What I find hard to understand is he's spent over a decade in a community of people who solve problems for a living (and some for a hobby too), yet he refuses to understand why people here try to solve problems.
-
@Yamikuronue said:
all they actually wanted was a place to vent. I always want to solve the problems, but that's not always the right response.
Indeed. Since there tends to be a strong correlation between those forms of communication and gender, that tends to make married life interesting. Suppressing the tendency to solve problems can be hard.

@Yamikuronue said:
I guess the DISC terminology is a D vs an S thing: Dominant personality types want to fix all the problems and have no time for social pleasantries, while [whatever S-type stood for again] wants to build good relationships first and foremost.
9 D, 9 C (made life interesting with my ex-wife's 9 D, 9 I)

I don't care why people do it. How is that relevant?
I don't care why you pick your nose; it's gross, stop doing it.

Sorry to interrupt the "pointing out Blakeyrat problems" thread, but I'd like to point out a NodeBB problem I don't recall seeing mentioned yet.
Discourse, for all its problems, did have a few good ideas. One that I've sorely noticed the lack of in NodeBB is the ability to see replies to a post. It was very useful to be able to look at the replies and see that somebody had already made the response I was about to make. Of course, it didn't completely prevent , but it did at least somewhat reduce the number of redundant posts.

Perhaps it would help if @blakeyrat changed his avatar thusly:
That would remind us that it's not about the nail.

You're reinforcing the idea that everybody hates him, which is false.
Baloney. I don't hate him at all! I just respond to him the same way he posts. When he's nice, I am nice. When he's posting spittle-flecked diatribes, I'm mean right back to him. He must not mind because he can post nicely to me in one topic while at the same time calling me stupid in another topic.
Seriously, you haven't realized the vitriol's all an act?
@fbmac said:
And it's scary that he started acting depressed
Nonsense. He's doing that to switch things up, because he was losing the flamewar. It's just another troll tactic he uses, like the way he still calls RaceProUK certain names over a year after the particular flamewar where he started doing that, or the way he yells at people for not reading what he wrote (although that last he's recently stopped doing after people called him out for doing the exact same thing.)
If $the_person_behind_the_persona is really depressed and/or suicidal, then I sincerely hope he tries to get help and/or treatment. But the persona is so toxic and has tried such a variety of toxic behavior I am not prepared to accept, without a shred of evidence, the idea that he really is depressed. If he doesn't like that, he should probably stop to think about how his own vile behavior induced that state of mind in others.
Also, he pulled this same trick like 6 months ago.

He mentioned being depressed more than once
You are familiar with the story of the boy who cried wolf, right?
Remember that you are dealing with a person who has repeatedly said he enjoys being an asshole online. Remember that good trolls mix up their methods periodically, to create maximum anguish on the sites they haunt. Remember that he's been repeatedly caught silently dropping tactics that backfire on him.
Occam's Razor says this is a ploy. Years ago on a forum I used to read, someone actually pretended to commit suicide and then stop posting for like a year.
I would give the benefit of the doubt on a claim of suicidal thought to nearly everyone on this forum except Blakey. Probably even @fox. I've seen too many abusive assholes try sympathy ploys to put others off guard to believe this is anything but that just because he said it, and blakey's picture is in the dictionary next to "abusive asshole".

Yeah. I tried to reply to your chat, but it would not go through. I sent @ben_lubar a message about it.
BTW, holy fuck, @ben_lubar's name autocompletes amazingly fast. On Discourse I was used to either typing everything out from memory or typing some and then waiting for-fucking-ever for autocomplete to happen.
This performance is amazing, even if the feature set is not there. Muchas gracias to @ben_lubar and all of the @administrators who made this happen.

He definitely has Asperger's. That does not entirely excuse him from being a total cockhole.

@fbmac said:
I think he could have asperger
I know people with Aspergers, and I mean the diagnosed condition[1], not the pretend version people affect. His persona does not have it. Look, everything he does, when he's not being civil, has to be filtered through the lens of "he pretends to not understand what people say so he can make fun of/insult it" and "he has repeatedly said he thinks it's funny to be an asshole."
[1] at least three that I know of, two of which I know in real life.
-
@fbmac said:
His anger seems consistent
Like I said, I've had two simultaneous conversations with him where he was civil in one, and frothing angry in the other.
-
@Polygeekery yeah, this forum seems eerily similar to dischorse in how it's built, except I haven't stumbled into 8 million bugs or annoying toasters in the first 15 minutes of using it. So far, the only 2 things I've noticed are that the title doesn't show up after you scroll down, and there's no way to reply to the OP unless you are at the very top or the very bottom.
But functionally, it's been more or less okay. A step up.
-
@Polygeekery said:

I am not prepared to believe that without a doctor's note with his real name on it. A real doctor I could look up on a health insurance company's doctor search, that I could call up and verify is a real person who actually wrote the diagnosis and didn't have a prescription pad stolen from his office recently. As I said, I know people with Aspergers, and he doesn't present with it.

It seems like Blakey inspires more hate than other forum denizens though. If Cartman posts an expletive-filled rant about NodeBB, people go "yeah, that fucking sucks". If Blakey does it, we get fifteen posts about how stupid Blakey is, which is tiresome. Save it for when he's actually being a dick, you know?
People push back against me as well. Eg. see my Windows 10 rants.
I just don't take it personally.

It's stupid that to "mark all as read" in the unread posts page you have to scroll back to the top of it. You can't mark all as read after scrolling down to take a look at all the thread titles.
This is I where I agree with you. "Mark all as red" should be at the bottom.
Unfortunately there's no "mark as red" but I really think there should be!
Let's mark all posts as red! Or blue! Or pink! This would be a great feature.
@ben_lubar, can this be implemented?

If you've met one person with ASD, you've met one person with ASD. You are not qualified to diagnose it, especially without ever having met the guy.

People don't suddenly come out of the woodwork to point out times they didn't push back against you just to prove you wrong because you said they push back.

A second bonus is that the creator of NodeBB hasn't taken time out from his day to come tell us how impossible it is to bot or break his forums and that we'll all love it in 6 months when we get tired of crying about how broken everything is.
-
So far, NodeBB is very fast. After Discourse, I think I could live with a ton of bugs if the software is at least responsive. That final week or two I couldn't load anything from Discourse about half the time.
I just realized I habitually sit and wait for about 20 seconds after each post, in case the post fails and I need to re-submit it with minor differences to get past the dupe protection.
-
@mott555 Discourse was fast too!
