:fa_bullhorn: The sound of AN ANNOUNCEMENT BEING MADE (or: Request for Comments: Comments)
-
It's still t/1000, just not topic/1000
-
-
No it's not! It loads in a matter of seconds!
-
Less than half a week remains.
-
Last 72 hours left on Discourse. And then, it's GONE. Forever. And it will never be back.
All the security leaks we found, all the threads derailed by discovered bugs, all the memes that grew around it... will be lost, like tears in rain.
Time to switch.
-
Damn you, now I really want to re-read the damned book.
-
Demonstration: Loading the first page of /t/1000. In both cases, the first 20 posts are loaded with the initial view.
Discourse
cold load (no cache)
warm load (recent cache)
NodeBB
cold load (no cache)
warm load (recent cache)
Note: the emoji are 404-ing because the NodeBB forum thinks it should be accessible from what.thedailywtf.com. This will be fixed without any additional effort on migration day.
-
Oh, the caching on NodeBB didn't even work because the TLS certificate was for the domain name, not the IP address. Without the invalid https, it looks like this:
-
Wait, you mean t/1000 can load in under 10 seconds? Shirely you can't be serious.
-
@ben_lubar FOUR SECONDS?! I think that's a little high, to be honest... perhaps we should devote some time to speeding up that route...

Huh?
Shirley you mean:
@julianlam said:Big topics are Doing It Wrong™. Users don't create big topics.

Well, TBH, there is a lot of data for that thread. Over 62k posts, 1.8e6 likes (upvotes), and over 80k views.
You get the idea.
-
-
To be fair, it doesn't feel like 4 seconds.

Chrome has a weird way of measuring things.
-
-
Correct.
Body is too similar.
-
I think Discourse is leaking into NodeBB.
-
@ben_lubar FOUR SECONDS?! I think that's a little high, to be honest... perhaps we should devote some time to speeding up that route...
.... damn.... in that case i don't think we'll need servercooties.com much anymore.....
-
I think we should keep it, but just replace the whole thing with
#TRWTF is Discourse
##And that's why we moved to NodeBB!
But with TDWTF Branding Guidelines applied
-
Although it claims to save it, it doesn't actually.
edit: Or any value over 20.
-
well, that's certainly a first
Setting posts per page to an arbitrarily high limit is just asking for it, in my opinion...

Oh, yeah... I was just seeing what would happen while we're on a test server.
It resets it to 20 anyway.
-
Just adjust the numbers and make 3 seconds show
Offline
Filed Under: Or you could make a nodeBB / Discourse comparing site!

That's sniff beautiful. That should be the post-CS, post-Discourse, while-nodeBB, pre-next-from-nodeBB official dailywtf poem.
-
-
Filed Under: Or you could make a nodeBB / Discourse comparing site!
Actually... not to let the Evil Ideas Thread leak into here or anything but...
Why not do that? Create a NodeBB plugin that will, upon changing a particular setting, synch that setting to Discourse's database.
Then you can do side-by-side tests to show how much better NodeBB is than Discourse for real-world applications.
Then link to starhole.thedailywtf.com from NodeBB's main website as "Our Competitive Advantage".
Given how good the NodeBB devs have been to us, it's a nice way of saying "thanks, and conquer the world already, will ya?"
-
I don't remember who said it (@weng?) but it might be a good idea to keep it for some time though to be able to backtrack exactly when cooties were introduced to NodeBB as well.
Or, to put it in more WTF:y terms: We can hold a lottery like the Nenana Ice Classic and bet on the time when we get /t/1000 back up to >10 seconds.
-
Setting posts per page to an arbitrarily high limit is just asking for it, in my opinion...
aaand we have our first CLOSED_DOING_IT_WRONG !
-
.... damn.... in that case i don't think we'll need servercooties.com much anymore.....
It is as if a million cooties cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced...
-
Or any value over 20.
Back in CS days, I used to reckon that 50 was a good value as that meant not too much mucking about with loading extra pages. It would still be terrible for /t/1000 of course, but most of the time it's not a big deal.
-
I'm pretty sure you just can't make it higher than the value in the admin panel.

Let's hope that first number ends up being at least 3 digits. Maybe even 4!

Umm … did the migration get bumped to tomorrow when I wasn't looking?
-
Discourse Project completes in
01 days : 22 hours : 25 min : 01 sec . 506 OK
-
Are we announcing yet where the NodeBB forum will be? A new subdomain, I presume?
-
Nope, same subdomain. In fact, both what.thedailywtf.com and forums.thedailywtf.com should ideally point to the new IP.
-
That's a point: with the CS content imported in full, there'll be no need for Blakey's archived version
-
there'll be no need for Blakey's archived version
The signature guy and other XSS abuse stuff gets lost without it, I guess.
Whether that'd be worth keeping it for or not? *shrug*
-
The signature guy and other XSS abuse stuff gets lost without it, I guess.
We can try to write a NodeBB plugin for that
-
Then I can use the server for that hardcore porn I've been saving up.
I bought a 3-year reservation for it, haha.
-
Really? What's the domain name going to be? Asking for a friend.
-
blakeyraunch.com
-
@ben_lubar FOUR SECONDS?! I think that's a little high, to be honest... perhaps we should devote some time to speeding up that route...
You can improve it offloading avatar drawing to a CDN
-
For that thread, the like button should be CDN-ified.
-

Sounds like a great idea. Perhaps @zogstrip can take a look at that?

I know you're joking, but it's still worth noting the difference:
I set the page size to 1000 posts and pumping 10MB pages with 1 million DOM nodes is behaving bad on the browser
: Well, maybe don't do that.I tried to scroll and it didn't work.
YOUR DOING IT WRONG STOP IT IPAD SCREW YOU BANNED
-
The signature guy and other XSS abuse stuff gets lost without it, I guess.
I vote CS be kept in read-only mode for posterior sake.
oldshit.thedailywtf.com ?
signatureguy.thedailywtf.com ?
-
I feel like the intent got lost in my reply. It was mostly in jest
Of course we'd probably want to place a reasonable cap in any case...
