How apple is giving design a bad name (article)

Video editing isn't about the GPU, it's because video professionals all totally use macs all the time. This is so true there's no need to check its accuracy
-
Anyone who works in business software sales can tell you this.
@cartman82 uses Javascript with all the new hipster frameworks. He knows that pretty and shiny sells over usability.
-
Are you guys talking about chiclet keyboards?
Us geezers remember a time when any machine with such a keyboard was derided as a toy. Now they are considered cool. Seems to be a trend among hipsters.

My sister's excuse for why she never installed a system update on her macbook is that she doesn't know the password for the updater app. But she can still install software without a password. Why would installing arbitrary software require less credentials than installing updates from the update installer app that came with the system?
-

System Updates are done through the App Store app, so it bundles the updates that do need the App Store password with ones that don't, and hitting "Update All" needs the password. If she doesn't know the App Store password she can just install the System Updates on their own and ignore the others. Or reset it.
Your sister is the in this instance.

Judging from the amount of sex jokes you make lately, you really need to get laid.
That may be true, but the jokes are approaching the point where they're funny, so it's much better than DF/lojban stuff.

The power button is fucking hidden in the back. Why would you hide the power button?!?
You must be young. 20 years ago [more or less] all computers had the power button in the back.
-
In comparison, I can disassemble my Thinkpad X220 and reassemble it completely in the same amount of time as it took me just to get to access the DVD drive in the Macbook Pro.
That's so it takes less time for Chinese children to assemble a Thinkpad X220.
-
Do you want a serious answer, or are you just griping?
-
Either she was lying to me that she didn't know the password and she just really didn't want security updates or her macbook is more fucked up than I thought it was.
-
That does not answer my question.
-
Correct.

I don't remember ever using desktop/laptop Intel/AMD PC that had the power button in the back. This dates all the way back to the 8086 (aka XT) my parents had back when I was a little kid.

The power button was a switch on the right side near the back.
I swear, the model I had put the power switch (the same style shown there) next to the 5.25" disk drive in the front.

With all the clones at that time, it's possible.

I remember those...
And I remember the huge "clack" they made when turned on or off.
You waked the neighborhood if you switched it at night

At least we have a nice Red Reset Button on ter front, fer easy access ya see. Sometimes ya needed ter reboot ter quit yer program, tha's the way ter do et!

Probably cause it helps grow the grass on the lawn.

See, now that I disassembled and reassembled a MacBook Pro, I know why there were so many suicides at Foxconn factories where those are assembled, and none in Lenovo's.

Wow, the power switch killed all those people???
-
It's good to remember how fucking UGLY computers used to be.

-
"again"? It's been hot shit for case modders and LAN party people for like 15 solid years.
Hell, it's hard to find a case without a dumb transparent window in the side.

Were they also flat and painted in the same color as the rest of the body?

Warning: Did not read whole thread, may be repeating stuff
Fun story: I tried to use an iMac recently. I literally sat in front of it for two minutes before I could figure out how to turn it on.
I talked to other people and they all had the same experience. The power button is fucking hidden in the back. Why would you hide the power button?!?
I was trying to figure out how to do something once on one of those old translucent colorful integrated-CRT iMacs that was set up as a kiosk at my university.
I managed to reboot the thing because I pushed what appeared to be a "play" button, wondering what media player it would start.
the entire philosophy was (and still is) "I know better than you about what you want and need" which is a huge turn-off to me.
The designs I see in Apple products always give me that same impression: they look nice, but they really want to control your experience. Computers are supposed to put me in control, not the other way around.
I think that means you are not in Apple's target market. If you think you know better than they do what kind of experience you want from using a device, then...well, they'd still be perfectly happy to sell to you, but you're paying a premium for access to a user experience that you don't want...
-

I never did understand why they did that. Was it too hard to write the word "Power" or whatever? Might as well made it a ! .... oh wait...

It does no more of the whole "I know better than you" thing than the Windows 7 machines next to it do.

I hope Antec won't End-of-life their P183 case anytime soon for that reason...

I prefer my monoliths in steel.
-
I've always preferred the CoolerMaster "Silencio" models (yes it's a stupid name, but they really are quieter.) That's what my last two towers have been.
EDIT: Antec is good at webpagezzz guyzzz:

No, but it sometimes would break a finger if you tried to do it too fast.
IIRC, one of the early BOFH stories involved telling a user that in order to fix a problem with a PC's B&G monitor (I think), they had to toggle the power as fast as they could for about a minute. Simon comments that he was surprised when it took so long for the PS to catch fire.
Ah, here it is. Hehe, 'power surging the drivers', that's classic!

Sell all desktops with a trackpad and a laptop keyboard.
FWIW, Apple's trackpads really are better. No idea why; just know that the Apple ones feel one hell of a lot more responsive. I wish PC laptops would stop having such miserable trackpads.
-
I agree, they are nice trackpads and the swipy thing on the magic mice has some good features as well. Their keyboards are still shit though
-
LAN party people
Just brought me some good memories of when we would of carry a beige computer box to a friend house and we would play warcraft or duke nukem 3d using a parallel cable for networking.
-
Us geezers remember a time when any machine with such a keyboard was derided as a toy
-
Their keyboards are still shit though
I have two keyboards:- Unicomp Endura Pro (a clone of IBM Model M, with buckling spring mechanism)
- SIIG Suntouch Mac (made in 1991, Mac layout, ALPS switches)
Both work with OS X nicely, and both are not shit.
-
Jesus, does nobody have a sense of humor today?
Did you try to make a joke again? It's OK, someday you'll manage.
-
-
Because they're not Apple keyboards.
Apple's extended keyboards produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s are very much non-shit. They started to be shit circa "Think different" campaign, the first iMac, and their transparent plasticky keyboards and mice.

I thought it was funny.

Thank you. For the fucking RECORD, assholes, the joke is he said it "waked" the neighborhood instead of "woke" the neighborhood. "Waked" as in "throw a wake for". Wakes are an event you have when someone dies.
THAT IS THE JOKE.
NOW IT IS STONE-DEAD.

EDIT: Antec is good at webpagezzz guyzzz:
And apparently, you suck at browsing. I know how to use the internets, and it renders correctly for me.

Then I log in and try to find the app I want. Is it in the Applications folder? Launchpad?
If itâs in one then itâll be in the other (unless somebody consciously removed it from Launchpad). Pro tip: if you know the name of the app, use Spotlight (Command-Space) instead. All I can do is show all windows, which will be tiny if I have more than a few open.
Thatâs why you should always make sure the option to use the function keys as function keys is on â that way, F9 through F11 activate the different ExposĂ© functions like they used to, before they all got consolidated under F3. (For the record, you can still do âshow all application windowsâ as Ctrl+F3 with the out-of-the-box settings, but I find that annoying when one press of F10 should do just as well.)Are you guys talking about chiclet keyboards?
As I understand the term, the one in your picture isnât a chiclet keyboard â that would be this type:
I quite like my Apple keyboard (full-size, USB-with-a-cord, mind â not the annoying narrow Bluetooth one thatâd require me to change the batteries every so often). I find it types better than most keyboards Iâve used, excepting mechanical ones that is.
My sister's excuse for why she never installed a system update on her macbook is that she doesn't know the password for the updater app.
Thereâs no such thing. To get a system update, sheâd just need to open the App Store app and itâd tell her thereâs an update â the computer should also show this under the Apple menu, so she can go there in two clicks. She might have to log in on the App Store, but that would require the same Apple ID she uses to download other software from it.No idea why; just know that the Apple ones feel one hell of a lot more responsive.
Could be due to the glass surface? All the ones Iâve used on other brand laptops (admittedly, not that many) felt like they were plastic, and not as smooth.
