Super Powers
-
Going slighty off-topic of the discussion from What the Daily Wish:
It's funny because in this game I'd wish for "being able to play God for 24 hours, then the universe resets except everyone remembers what happened".
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Here's the rules of this game:
- You can wish for any super-power whatsoever, as long as it doesn't generate an irresolvable paradox or contradict these rules;
- You can choose a probability between, let's say, every 4 out of 5 and 1 in ten million. That will be the probability of being born with access to that super-power. Not everyone gets it, but a fair amount of people do;
- You don't get to choose who is born with this super-power. A lot of good people will get it, but so will a lot of wreckless morons, prejudiced bigots and sociopathic criminals;
- To prevent total chaos due to babies and immature children, the power only becomes active when you "come of age", whatever that might mean in context. Let's say: it takes 15 years of practice until you get it.
As an ammendment to rule 2, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. It can be a spectrum of capabilities. The point is some people get it all, others get nothing.
-

This sounds like a bad idea. There are a lot more idiots than "good" people, for most any definition of "good" you like.
-
It's what makes this mental exercise interesting, methinks.
-
I quite like the worm book...
-
Super empathy with other's suffering.
-
That chance of this power is 1-in-1.
The power is twofold:
-
The power gives you an extremely minor amount of psychic ability, telekenisis, and an extremely minor boost in health, longevity, strength. This is extremely weak-- you could maybe sense a single neuron in someone-- have enough telekenisis to move a molecule. Very weak.
-
The power also works to boost other people who have this power, exponentially based on the number of people, and how physically close they are. However, only my exact DNA makeup is a received for this. Everyone else is a transmitter.

This sounds like a bad idea.
Depends on the end-goal.
Unlike Accalia's scenario, it isn't us getting the super-powers. It's some random dude somewhere. So...
It seems like a dumb question, without some kind of goal in mind.
That said, there was a comic book superhero whose power was: "every power you never heard of". Which was pretty awesome. Also see the fan theory on Pumaman's power. (His power is whatever Vadinho tells him it is.)
-
Sounds like you've come pretty close to defining the X-Men universe....
-
You people suck all the fun out of genies, bottles, and l∞pholes.
-
Super empathy with other's suffering.
We already have that, it's called being a bleeding-heart liberal.
Guns and Bibles! Guns and Bibles! YEEEE-HAW! Who am I even trolling anymore!?
FUCK I LOVE EMOJIS!
-
Really common regeneration. Would be interesting how that changes warfare, self defense, and so on.
-
Effortless instant physical translation. Want to be somewhere else? OK, there you are. Probability max.
Let's see Trump build a fence big enough to counter that.
-
The ability to reason and problem-solve better than anyone else - more quickly, more clearly, etc. Even though you don't possess a sexy superpower like flying or whatever, you can still take what's at your disposal and get pretty close - somewhat like Christian Bale's Batman.
-
The power to make anyone appear to be Stan Lee.
-
Invisibility. Not yourself but the ability to make someone else invisible. Think of the trolling possibilities!
-
Common uncontrolled teleportitis
Because Discourse.
-
Viki got boring around Suikoden 4.
Yeah, we get it. She randomly teleports when she sneezes. What about Flynt and Viktor? The yaoi fans must know!
-

Building upon this: ability to instantly understand how any system (be it mechanical, biological or physical) works, and how it interacts with other systems.
High probability should be fine. Since it's not limited to understanding only a part of it, it should prevent most of assholishness since anyone should also be able to understand the consequences of any bad action they might want to take.
-
ability to instantly understand how any system (be it mechanical, biological or physical) works, and how it interacts with other systems.
Does that include the self? If so, does it include understanding how the instant understanding subsystem works?
-
I don't see why not and how you'd limit it. If you banned introspection all you'd need is another person with the power and inspect them.
So, if I get where you're going with this, yes, you probably could replicate it artificially, or inhibit it in people who don't want it. It all depends on how something like that would work. I didn't try to figure out how it would work - is it just physics and on what level, or is it a "magical" thing, that's up for debate.
-

Or, if you got a head start by working somewhere like the NSA, you could inhibit it in people who don't work for the NSA.
-
Yeah, but all you'd need then is an ally with the power who could understand how the inhibitor works... ;)
-
How about eye lasers that you can't turn off for 1% of people?
-
And then they fall in love with some telepath that constantly dies and keeps coming back?
-
Effortless instant physical translation. Want to be somewhere else? OK, there you are. Probability max.
Except your clothes, etc, don't come with you?
-
I still don't get what the end result of this super power world is supposed to be. What's being accomplished here?
-

Sounds like Faye in the Grimnoir series.
-
What's being accomplished here?
Discussing it makes me slightly less bored. Also, since it's imaginary and completely a figment of my imagination, I can demand that its occupants dance for my entertainment.
-
Look, if I'm wishing for a super-power I'm not even guaranteed to get, what the fuck is the point?
I can't even use it in a negative way to wish other people be (say) stupider, because if the odds of it are high enough I'd probably end up stupid, too. The benefit to me is exactly the same as the benefit to the rest of mankind. Which, ok, "I wish that 99.9% of people have the ability to instantly and perfectly heal all wounds", there, now there's no sickness I made the world better, but it's still a dumb game.
-
-
Well, I like it. The graphics are kinda crap but I can live with that.
-
There is no point. Like life, it's open ended.
The meta-point is to see what people come up with, maybe to reflect on what kind of changes each wants to bring to the world, but mostly for entertainment.
Beats reading the 37482nd discussion about guns.
-
"I wish that 99.9% of people have the ability to instantly and perfectly heal all wounds", there, now there's no sickness I made the world better,
Except the remaining 0,1% are now social pariahs, and if the powers are hereditary then probably also forbidden to reproduce. Congratulations, you've just implemented eugenics!
-
Good.

Super power: perfect aim with firearms.
Comes with no bullets (you forgot to specify...).
-

Understanding how shit works and having the requisites at hand to do something with that understanding are not necessarily the same thing.
I understand how iPhones work (more or less) but going into production and outselling Apple tomorrow? Not gonna happen.
-
Except your clothes, etc, don't come with you?
The usual comic-book rules for this kind of thing include clothes and carried objects. They generally sweep the foot/shoe/carpet/floor/building/foundation/whole-planet connection under the rug.
-
-
Super power: 1 in 2 people will have a penis that goes in instead of out and if you stick an out-penis into an in-penis, sometimes a small person comes out, but it usually takes a while.
-
penis

You're really getting too old to be playing with
dollsdwarves...
-
Dwarf Fortress does not have sexual organs. This is because the first instinct of all Dwarf Fortress players when introduced to a new feature is to find a way to weaponize it.

But you can hit unsuspecting people on the head with your thrown weapon just fine.

I prefer the Terminator way. Otherwise it's just too powerful and disruptive.

Or you could buy some bullets.
If the gun is a caliber you can get bullets for. You didn't specify that either.

The gun is all guns, of course. Obviously, this power is probably more useful for Americans than for a lot of other less free peoples.

Sure, leaving spherically shaped holes in anything near them in not disruptive in any way.

+1 for that, although if it was me, I'll find somebody with copy memory(can snapshot what he saw or heard) and i guess take advantage of it, after 24hrs. Of course ill hypnotize him, so no one can take advantage of TEH technology!
