In which I accidentally Windows 10

@Jaloopa In 10, I can use mouse TYVM.
-
@Gąska sometimes I use the mouse, sometimes the keyboard. Depends where my hands are when I start moving things around
-
Oh boy. Work PC started showing ads and suggested apps in my Start Menu. I found out how to turn it off and went on with my life. Then I went home, PC there is also showing ads and suggested apps. I turned the setting off there too, but nothing happened. I'll have to screenshot it when I get home this evening, but it clearly shows me ads when I have the "no ads" slider turned off. Must have been written by the same team that wrote the fake Windows Update Settings control panel view.
-
@mott555 my PC started showing them yesterday too. But right-clicking the suggestion and selecting "don't show suggestions" gets rid of them... haha just kidding. It doesn't do anything, but instead opens Start menu preferences, where you can uncheck "show suggestions"
checkboxslider thingy. It's separate from "show ads"checkboxslider thingy.

@Tsaukpaetra The windows key shortcuts are really useful. Win+X in 7 is particularly helpful, for instance.

This will be interesting to see how it works on my normally-not-connected CarPC that I just updated last night.
How much do you want to bet it was in that "Cumulative Security Update" package?Because, you know, adding adds supports better security!
-
@Tsaukpaetra well, official Windows 10 ad system is certainly more secure than random adware found over internet...

Certainly! Now we have a verified advertising ID that can eventually be traced back to actual MS accounts! :)
(Actually, I'm pretty sure that's not "technically" correct, but, eh, pedants.)

I believe I've already called you all idiots for upgrading to Windows 10. Allow me to re-affirm that yes, indeed, you are fucking idiots.

@mott555 said in In which I accidentally Windows 10:
I shut it off before it could restart
What are you planning to do next, exactly? Some sort of special maneuver where you make your computer usable without turning it on?

@accalia said in In which I accidentally Windows 10:
personally i just don't get what all the hate about windows 10 is.... is this another moving of the cheese issue?
people don't like being pushed like this, it doesn't matter if win10 is any good

Except when you cannot, for some GNU crappy software bug that is not tested, like font size getting big and crashing the system or something
hey, KDE isn't GNU

Does not matter, I prefer to blame GNU
KDE is compiled with gcc.KDE is not GNOME, but GNU is everywhere

With all this awfulness surrounding Win10 upgrades and these "emergent" Win10 features, I don't think I'll be able to stomach upgrading to Win10 even when thing die down - I might just wait for Win11, assuming it won't become a social media platform by then.

Don'tcha know? Every other Windows is awful! Don't let the fact that they skipped a number fool you!
-
@Tsaukpaetra Isn't win8.1 often seen as separate from win8?

My point stands.

Win11
What's that?
(There's no guarantee there will be anything other than updates a la OS X from now on.)
-
@Magus said in In which I accidentally Windows 10:

Yes and no. There won't be an "11" per se, but you have to differentiate it by build numbers now (something like 1511 or whatever the current version is).

Meh. I even paid for Windows 10 for my home-built machine seeing how my W7 install was not completely legal anymore.
So far I think I've had less trouble than the Linux install on that same box.

@Gąska
?
-
@CreatedToDislikeThis I don't see anything wrong. It says that your copy is genuine, right?
-
I hope to make it into windows 11

@clippy said in In which I accidentally Windows 10:

You mean Windows 10.11 for Workgroups
-
@clippy speaking of which - I wonder when Microsoft will give up on their promise of Windows 10 being the last Windows...
-
@Gąska My bet is they'll make a "Windows 10.1" or something which will be mostly the same product but technically a different product one, like Windows 8 and 8.1.
-
@Gąska You don't even need any windows loaders or cracks. As I understand it, you can download and install Windows 10 without a key, and the literally the only limitation is you can't change the ugly default background, and you can bypass that by using the "set as background" option of the Photos app (Oh! What a totally accidental oversight by Microsoft!)
Some cynical people would say they're merely waiting for the Windows 7 end of support to collect that sweet upgrade money from the enterprise users, then they'll make it free (or at least cheaper) for everyone.
-
@anonymous234 are they the only company that currently charges for an OS?
-
@Jaloopa well, OSX is bundled with every Apple's PC, so I wouldn't count it as free. Especially that Apple's PC + OSX bundle costs way more than a regular PC that's just like Apple's - but this overhead is split between OS and brand, in no clear proportion.
-
@Gąska upgrades are free, and there's no product key or anything so no cracking required to install it on a hackintosh. It's a bit of a special case, but the OS isn't sold for money
-

no, apple sells it too.
https://www.amazon.com/version-Leopard-computer-processor-required/dp/B001AMHWP8/
for only $35 though, not the $100+ that Micro$loth sells their wondowz for
-
@accalia isn't it just upgrade? And isn't this version 7 years old?
-
@accalia I think that was the last version they charged for
-
@Gąska said in In which I accidentally Windows 10:

-shrug- i dunno. it's still sold as new direct from Apple on Amazon so i assume it's reasonably current.

As long as you're on Apple hardware, you already bought the license. Last time I checked, you have to buy a separate license if you want to create a VM.
-
@anonymous234 You can get a legit copy by going to the downloads page for users who "need assistive technologies". There's absolutely no checks or requirements that you actually use assistive technologies before you download.

Their language: "We are not restricting the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer."
My interpretation: Turn on a High Contrast theme for thirty seconds. Legal compliance achievement unlocked!

Windows 7 is similar to this, but it will log you out after a while, I don't remember how long it let's you.
