I did take a look at meta.d as it was linked to see what's up. Someone necroed a 2 year old topic about "welcome emails" not being sent and repeating over and over again that Discourse had no such feature. I wonder what led to that confusion...
Oh.

the browser added that due to
<link rel="manifest"
here's an example of another site with a manifest

@error_bot giphy amazing every word of what you just said was wrong

I thought manifests were for Android, but @boomzilla 's screenshot shows desktop Chrome.
My best guess is that it allows you to install a custom "search engine" in Chrome to search Meta.D from your Location Bar thanks to this:
<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" href="https://meta.discourse.org/opensearch.xml" title="Discourse Meta Search">

Hmmm....the site seems to work in FF. It's just totally fucked on chrome (both latest stable desktop versions).

That's what you get for using internet explorer on Windows phone

Yeah, I really shouldn't expect the site to work on an obscure browser with a practically unused rendering engine.

It's the same feature that makes mobile browsers pop a "wanna add this to your homescreen?" dialog.

@remi said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@dkf Manually picking the correct meme is no fun. Much funnier to spend (at least) twice as much time ordering a mindless drone to do it with vague and ambiguous instructions, then complain that they didn't do it right.
Ready to serve!

@boomzilla We might have taken this Discourse thing a bit too far...
Wrong thing made by wrong people for entirely wrong reasons, with wrong tools.
Ridiculing in every possible way warms my little heart.Exhibit of the day:
A curious thing; with two full-time developers working since Nov 2018 it has been already fixed twice and is still not working.
-
Didn't Discourse do a weird thing with string replacing of MD5 hashes?
-
@LB_ paths are hard...
-
@cabrito I guess they already rolled out a patch, because I can't repro it.
Edit:
RTFA (past tense, indicative):
Microsoft has rolled out a fixed version of Defender, 1.313.1687.0, via Windows Update.
-
Looks like Microsoft Azure Functions are migrating to Discourse :

@cabrito said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
Microsoft releases update.
imagining this as a newspaper headline
-
"Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Update That Doesn't Cause More Problems That It Fixes"
Now that'd be newsworthy.

It's better you complain in one central space than spreading your negativity across the web?

Yeah, but they don't mean it.

I too would love to see this fixed.
The fix is sadly very very complicated (we need to convert HTML → BBCode and do not have logic for that at the moment). I am confident we can swing it some time in the next few months.
Adding this to the list of things to do so it is not lost.
There is no way this could go wrong

@loopback0 smarter people than the Jeffster have fudged this up harder than Jeffco.
What amuses me is that forum software shipped more than a decade ago trying to do that. But I guess if it didn’t happen after Discourse was born (shat out), it didn’t ever happen.
-
Scrolling webpages is difficult
-
@loopback0 well if they will go off reimplementing other peoples’ ideas badly without understanding why those ideas worked, that’s what you get.

Oh yeah? How many unicorns did this so-called forum software have?
-
@boomzilla SMF? No unicorns, just a home-brew WYSIWYG (latterly referred to as WYSIWTF) editor complete with home-brew HTML to BBCode routine. With regex if I remember rightly. But it was a 90s era toxic hellstew platform so… y’know what that means.
I think for bonus points the username of the guy who wrote it actually was “regularexpression1”.
Other forums may vary.

LOL
edit: although surprisingly few of those TDWTFers are (currently) banned.

Most of the original bans ran out after a year or two I think. Then some of us went back and got anonymized. I think a few people slipped through without ever getting any actual bans.
