Who deleted is not an administrator or a moderator (trust_level_3)
Imma not clicking through to meta.derp, so tell me... did a non-admin delete their own posts, or someone else's?
(unrelated, does DipstickShore still have the ability for the OP to nuke a thread, deleting everyone's messages? )

Too many of their own.

I think you're prevented from deleting your own post of it's the OP of a topic.

Yeah that is why you are better off reviving an old topic

@loopback0 They should pay Evgeny, he's doing actual QA like an actual QA person would do.

@blakeyrat QA? Banned! No longer welcome here!

You're making a joke, but that is verbatim the reason we switched forum software.
-
@ben_lubar Um, yes, I already know that. I'm quite well acquainted with the reasons we switched. I wasn't banned, but only because I never had an account on meta.d to ban. I thought (but not very seriously) about opening one just to become officially unwelcome.

I'm not trying to school you - I'm giving context for future archaeologists.
-
@ben_lubar if future archaeological expeditions are reading this site... Man they're going to have a view of this time period.
-
@ben_lubar Ah, carry on then.

Really? THIS is the website with the weirdest stuff on it? Not, say, a news website?

Country code for Germany is DE?
Actually, that's interesting,
:flag_de:
autocompletes to:germany:
here. Huh.
-
@onyx Oh, I didn't think of that. Usually we just use "D" as the official country code, but de is used sometimes, for example in de_de, like en_us.
-
@topspin Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what the country stickers on the cars say, right?
But it's kinda ambiguous, so...

He's fine until you start reporting bugs, especially when he disagrees that something is a bug, or worthwhile fixing.
As an example, for a long time he didn't give a shit about performance on Android, because he believed all of the available hardware was shit.
The example that started this thread was, the two dismiss buttons were appearing in different orders on desktop and mobile. Jeff couldn't see past the fact that PJH took the desktop screencap on his mobile, so he said words to the effect of "If you use the desktop layout on mobile, it's your own fault", completely missing the (very obvious) point PJH was making.
Jeff seems to take bug reports as personal attacks, and cannot separate his ego and self worth from his software. We found an unusually high number of bugs, including numerous critical security bugs, and Jeff just couldn't take it.
It's OK for your software to suck. It's what you do about it, that matters.
-
@doctorjones He couldn't take the constant actual abuse. He offered Alex $10k to get rid of you all.

@pie_flavor said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
@doctorjones He couldn't take the constant
actual abusedisagreement. He offered Alex $10k to get rid of you all.FTFY. Because that's what it was. It sometimes became rude when he refused to acknowledge any valid criticism, yes, but not outside the boundaries of these forums (which he left already before the mass-banning on meta.d).
And if you mean the memes using his name, I'd post a blakeyrant about that, but then we'd have to jeff the thread which would eventually get fbmac'd a few months down the line...

Normally one would pay $10k to get good QA. Not pay $10k to get rid of good (and free!) QA. That's very .

From what I've read*, both of what you and @DoctorJones said is true. This place is about making fun of bugs, and it had a lot of those. Julian stays out of the more abusive parts of the forum and nicely handles the many complaints about Node.
* (I was a member back in CS days but only lurking during because my account got botched (and I hate infiniscroll), only asked pjh to restore it once we migrated again)

QA is normally not as rowdy as this community, or at least has the professionalism not to mock the devs (too much).
But yeah, we did try to keep it "strictly business" when on meta.d so the random banning there was uncalled for.

I disagree, if you're an asshole to someone in a bar, you won't be welcome in his house, it doesn't matter if you always behaved well there.
-
@sockpuppet7 Every forum has its own ground rules, and Jeff even joined in with the trolling over here.
We respected the rules over there, and he shat all over the rules here. He would have fit in if it wasn't for him abusing his mod privileges, that he should never have had in the first place. That was when things started to turn sour.
He got abuse over here, but it was all well deserved. Over there we gave concise and well thought out bug reports. He was free to stay out of the forum over here, but he couldn't help himself. He had to try to exert his will over us in a very heavy handed manner, and got pissy when we rightfully told him to fuck off.

professionalism

It's the devs' fault for listening into all our private conversations. (Speaking of which, has anyone done a GDPR request against CDCK yet?)

Similarly, he got terse with me for reporting a Discourse bug (I think it was something with browser history and the Back button not doing what you'd expect) that manifested in Internet Explorer. I happened to be running on a Microsoft Surface instead of on a desktop PC, and "Tablets are dumb and nobody uses those. CLOSED_NOT_A_BUG."

Why do you think he received that abuse?
We made every effort to help the asshole out. Hell, we even sent him cupcakes when he declared his shitty-ass shit forums were "1.0" even though the actual version number should have been something closer to 0.4a.
Believe me, he earned everything he got.

As forum members? Sure.
Banning a group of experienced techies who can track down and report bugs in great detail from their support forums? Less so.
-
@topspin said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
I hate infiniscroll
That was another bone of contention. Some of us hated infiniscroll and asked for a paginated interface. The response was akin to religious devotion to infiniscroll. "Paginated interfaces are the Evilz. We will never add a paginated interface to Discurse, not even as an option." And started making stupid car analogies. CDCK is a car dealership. We wanted a truck. They do not and will not ever sell trucks. If we wanted a truck, we should go to a truck dealership.

I'd also point out that normally one wouldn't delete closed bug reports, regardless of the reason for closure, just because they're closed. That's also very .

@hardwaregeek Don't forget that it already had pagination for when Javascript was disabled. They probably spent more time arguing
the vision of King Jeff™ than it would have taken to make it available when JS was enabled.

$1000/month just to host Meta?!
-
@loopback0 Good grief. You could host a Meta-sized SMF forum on a $10/month Digital Ocean droplet.
-
@mott555 I think a 10$ is probably small, they said they have 2 million page views/month. They also said it could be running in a 80$ ocean droplet of not for the monitoring and redundancy.
-
-
-
@sockpuppet7 You also wouldn't need all that monitoring and failover stuff with SMF because it doesn't crap itself to death every four minutes.
@sockpuppet7 said in How can this be so wrong??? (AKA the Discopocalypse thread):
2 million page views/month
That's about one page view per second. You could do that with a Raspberry Pi and a slow-ass SD card with forum software that isn't terribly written.
